I feel like there needs to be some perspective here. It would mean they couldn't plausibly win the generation, but the overall stats for XBO still paint it as a very healthy console on track to outsell the X360 worldwide. I don't think "fucked" would be a fair way to describe the situation they're in, except in the very narrow sense that their ability to come first place would be torpedoed.

Seriously. I hate this narrative where there has to be some big loser.

It makes no sense and I see that line of thought all the time. Number 1 and number 2 can both have profitable healthy life cycles.

I simply do not understand this obsessions unless you are number one in the console space your entire division is a failure. Its entirely possible to not win a generation and still have a healthy console.

What does Sony say in a situation like this?

Well, we didn't have the top selling hardware this month, but we still did pretty good!

Of course they would never say that verbatim, but i imagine that would essentially be their message...?

Well than can say "PS4 had a great month making it fastest selling console of all time"

I can't think of a good PR statement for Sony, because saying "we almost won while not cutting our price" doesn't sound good, while in reality with how close it was - it's awesome.

Best Selling console on Black Friday seems like the way I would go. Toss in the old Cumulative leader line somewhere as well.

If those numbers are even close to being right...IDK What do people want? They're both great pieces of kit but that XB1 price/deal is a steal.

If the generation lasts for 8 years, sure.

I could be completely wrong, I was under the impression that both PS4 and XBO were substantially outperforming the first year sales of their predecessors?

I simply can't see XB1 nearing that 80 million LTD without dominating NA and possible UK like they did last gen.

Sony is simply too strong in both those markets this time around for that to happen again.

so the wiiu still selling like shit lmao. what they need to do is at least release a bundle without the damn tablet and instead with pro controller so it knocks the price down + redesign the ui to make it work.

most people are not going to pay that much for a secondary console + ridiculous ninty game prices that never drop

You focus on if you improved over last year, and improved over last generation at this time. Or just bring out the cheerleaders and talk about how everything is awesome, because everyone knows it is.

The PS4 is. The X1 too but only because of a front loaded launch and early 360 supply issues.

MS has lost NA, they will have a massive contraction in install base here. They've also lost the UK and the console is practically dead everywhere else.

Nintendo please publish your games on PS4 , atleast for this generation. Nintendo fans plz don' t kill me. peace.

I'll tell my uncle that works at nintendo to port smash to ps4, but only if you call your uncle at sony to port their games to pc so we can play them at 60fps. Isn't port begging fun?

I don't think this generation will be that long, and I don't think any of these consoles outsell their predecessors totals

not the way MS supports their consoles in the long haul. 360 was an outlier due to the price parity between the 2 consoles. MS should linger around 60+million. I predict Sony will break 100+million this gen. Especially with their focus on Playstation being their moneymaker.

People are acting like this is a defeat or hollow victory, but if I was MS, I'd consider keeping pace with the PS4 a win. It's a massive success, so their goal isn't to beat it necessarily, but to replicate that success.

But how much did it cost them, financially, to replicate that success? Sony got almost the same numbers and still kept the price the same...

Haha, great gif!

Irrelevant anecdote time: I know two persons who bought an Xbox One during November, that's more than the usual zero persons. So that's something. Things are getting better for MS, even here in Germany.

So Japan + US November = WiiU down 20k YOY (Down 42k in Japan, up 22k in US)

Wow. Europe won't be far off last years figures regardless of if they're better or worse.

So Smash has pretty much done nothing for sales?

The PS4 has been breaking sales records left and right so far hasn't it? Topping sales for even 1 month is no small task. MS deserves this victory. Way to be aggressive MS! Even if the lead aint that big, still... F.

Plug their Holiday bundles. Say that the PS4 is currently outselling the PS3 by ??% at the same point in its life span. Plug the 20th Anniversary?

In the USA. Worldwide is a different matter. It would be great but I'm skeptical XB1 can surpass 85 million sold worldwide. PS4 is the console selling well worldwide. XB1 seems to be struggling outside of the USA and UK.

Greenberg is in the UK at the moment, so time zones may make commenting trickier

He's currently about 20 minutes away from me (he is in Reading, I'm pretty close), its 12.30am now, I suspect he just decided not to get involved, the time different isn't really a factor. First info came through at 11.20pm~

Either they've been told to keep quiet or they decided whatever victory they got wasn't worth shouting about

Hardware being down makes sense, given last year's launches.

Software "only" being down 2% given other channels, actually indicates growth imo. NPD is going to need to find a way to access digital to continue to paint an accurate picture and remain relevant for software sales.

You're right. Seeing all those downs had me feeling down. XB1 + Wii U being up yoy wouldn't be enough to counteract down PS4, 3DS, 360, PS3, Wii and Vita.

The real important thing here is who won Black Friday weekend. Because I'm betting it was Sony by a decent margin.

That PS4 bundle was moving like absolute gangbusters everywhere I went on Black Friday.

I thought Sony GAF of all people should be used to explaining how the PSP wasn't an overall failure just because the DS was a mega-success.

While I question the "worldwide" part now I agree with everything else. It'll be a solid second in US and UK and that'll be enough to get to about 45-55 million over the gen.

I don't see it outselling 360's WW though, not at this rate.

I'm buying an Xbone next year.

I just need a slim model and a better bundle, I wasn't touching AssCreed with a ten foot pole.

Losing 54 million dollars to "outsell" your competitor by 10k is a fools errand. That number assumes $60 difference between standard and sale prices and "900k" consoles sold. If less consoles sold then the number would go down. If you include the cost of the games included then the number goes up. (not even taking into account games included)

Don't forget those $50 gift cards that were subsidized. They lost a fuckton to attain sales parity with Sony.. if what Cboat posted is accurate.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage

At this point they're going to stand pat until the next console.

I do think there has to be careful consideration made to the type of slashing of their profit margin they required to even barely edge out PS4. Was the increase in unit sales for November NPD year-over-year sufficiently large enough to make the venture worth it relative to the diminished profit they made on the effort?

The problem is what they did in order to sell this much might gimp them moving forward.

The X1 was a success already, these aggressive deals were not necessary. They wanted the big numbers and it might hit them back instead.

With both consoles selling about a million each in November a 10k difference is a teensy-tiny rounding error.

For all intents and purposes both consoles are tied (november).

This is a best case scenario for your garden variety gaffer as it means the console market is healthy, development across the board will increase and the drama is as juicy as it gets with such an unexpected twist.

Xbone is not coming anywhere near 80 mil. I'd say 50 tops.

Congratulations EA and Bioware on creating a magnificent PC-focused Rpg franchise and then driving it into the ground with dumbed down A for Awesome crap.
