NPD Sales Results for November 2014 [Up3: NPD Data Error, AC:U #5]

It's pretty amazing that the Xbox almost cut the gap in half in a single month. And Xbox will probably outsell the PS4 by 200k or so for Dec. If they do that, they will have cut the 1 million to under 500K, maybe even less, in only two month. That's pretty crazy.

Of course, it came at the cost of profitability more than likely, but it's now very possible that they could completely shift the momentum long term.

Random thoughts:

1) None of these holiday price cuts on identical SKUS match PS2 and Xbox in May 2002, when they cut 33% off the price of their regular systems, no bundle games. $300 to $200 = 33% cut. Kinectless X1 was $399, it got cut to $329-$349 cash minimum expenditure and PS4 got cut to $349. Forget the games, minimum cash expediture for the systems got cut less than 25%. There's a lot of talk about unprecedented price cuts, that just isn't the whole truth. Regular consumers do not have the opportunity to walk in and buy one of these systems for 2/3 of the price it had previously been selling at. Not everybody values these games that highly because they aren't necessarily the games they want to play. We've seen bigger price cuts before (permanent, even), and we likely will again.

EDIT: Was thinking of the PS4 with $50 gift card at certain retailers, never mind, I apologize.

2) Most of the time I pick up my Wii U I launch it with the pro controller. The gamepad sits in a cradle behind my TV and I fish it out for the rare game that requires it or to use the store or control panel settings. Why on earth they didn't code this thing to allow a no-gamepad-SKU is completely lost on me. Oh, Nintendo.

3) Vita fire sale in January? I want a slim.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Wait....who cut the PS4 to $349?

What are the current prices for PS4 and XO in the US?

XBO - $349
PS4 - $399

Can anyone give a source for this?

Edit: wait its based on a graph some random person did?

So we have XB1 @ 1.2 million: http://www.geekwire.com/2014/xbox-o...ember-topping-ps4-wii-u-early-holiday-battle/

That was confirmed by a tweet from an editor at the Verge.

We know Wii U's numbers pretty much from Nintendo's PR.

Creamsugar is highly reputable and when he released the pie chart everything made perfect sense. The #'s you see are pretty much spot on.

Again, maybe I'm wrong but negative XB1 news seem to make things blow up more than positive news. This thread sorta proves it.

Negative news, full stop, blows up more. Look at pre-launch games, released media that looks rough leads to pages and pages of comments. Then someone posts a direct feed that looks great and the topic falls off the front page within an hour.

December has had better deals so far. Target Walmart, Best Buy ect selling it for 250$

Yup. But I think its important that actual gamers know there's actually quite a lot to play on the system. Doesnt matter what its fate is in the long run market wise. Its effectively Nintendo's PS3. 250$ is a good price for it imo.

"A lot to play" is arguable.
There's nothing there that interests me, personally.

12-13 million units sold is the much more likely range. I question if the system will get to six million units in America by year five.

It's really hard to understate how hard this failure is. Nintendo's PS3 isn't close.

Yup. Doesn't matter if you are Sony/MS/Nintendo.

I think they're both officially $399...? I could be wrong there, but its so hard to follow anymore because every day (it seems) there's a new, limited time offer/sale price. Especially on the XB1. But the PS4 reg price is $399 for sure in the US.

After many months of speculation on PS4 success such as the GPU, RAM, Mind share, the futuristic design, word of mouth and better multiplats. It all comes down to one simple overlooked answer which was PRICE

$349 for XBO for November and December, but they will keep the price in January I bet.

Overlooked? Come on.

I don't think that tells the whole story, but it played a role, yeah.

But I think the XB1 DRM backlash played just as big a role, certainly within the first 10 months or so.

edit: I think maybe I'm not understanding this guy's point. Oh well.

Maybe Sony will consider lowering the price back down to par with the Xbone in Canada now I wonder. I'd imagine things were in Microsoft's favor over here in Canuckland as well.

Sales threads are always fun.

Question is, how long will that last before PS4 starts outselling Xbox One again in NA?

Price drops, while they certainly help consoles that are underperforming in sales, only provides a temporary boost. Afterwards, it starts wearing off. History has shown that time & time again.

If that were the case they would have been selling the same amount since X1 became $399.

Sure, if you look at it in the most narrow and simplistic view.

I cannot even comprehend the awfulness of the Wii U numbers. On the busiest shopping month with a huge game release.

what a disaster.

apart from the non existent third party support I have mostly come to think the console is fine... it is the marketing and the platform itself.

Made it about 40 pages after seeing cboats claim and that he was banned trying to find out when the real number difference got reveled. Guess it's just easier to ask here at the end. How much did Xbone win by?

That was probably the main thing, but you can't over look the exclusives. Even with its issues, the mcc sold a bunch of xb1's.

If price was the only factor, WiiU would've won. Or MS would've won in July when they started bundling Forza 5 with XB1 @399.

Value perception is the answer.

329/49 XB1 with 2 popular games > 399 PS4 with no game > 399 XB1 with Forza or Madden.

I think it's important to note how many 360's were sold and how many 360 games sold as well. I'm sure the majority of the 360 owners without a current gen console will move onto the Xbox One over time. Not all of them of course, but a pretty big majority considering their investments in Xbox Live.

I just wish there were some hard numbers on which consoles last gem users preferred this gen. Is like to see how many "jumped ship" and if 360 owners are just holding out longer to move onto the One.

Yup

It's more about, games+pricing.

People want to have fun playing games and Xbox one has fun games. That and coupled with the pricing made them win.

Most consumers are not "invested" in an online service, but will move on to where their friends are and word of mouth.

Thanks, that does sound like a ton. Price cut paid off then. Those are WW numbers I assume?

NPD is North America.

This is store bundle, NPD track as a standalone game sale.
I was actually wondering about that bundle. That's the "unlimited stock" BF bundle, right? Do we have any idea how many of those vouchers were sold? Reading the fine print, it sounded like it rang up as an XBone purchase — and also a Halo purchase since it's a store bundle? — with delivery promised by Christmas. However, you needed to go online by like Dec. 2nd to actually verify you wanted the XBone. If you changed your mind or failed to act, the amount charged for the bundle would automatically be converted to a gift card of equal value.

So, do we know how many of those there were sold in November, and will the unclaimed console be counted as returns in December, or what? Are they listed as a separate SKU in the NPD report? I thought someone was saying they would be, but maybe that was just in Walmart's internal system.

Anyway, it was kind of an unusual offer, so I'm wondering how it went down.

I thought it'd at least overtake the Gamecube initially.
I still had hope until I saw those numbers. I honestly expected more than 400k.

I think it's time Nintendo dropped the price. I'm not talking about "100$ or still too much" nonsense people constantly speak, I just think the good holiday deals like 250$ with Mario 3D World and Nintendo Land should an official thing.
Also perhaps the 8GB white one with just Nintendo Land for 150$.
