When can we reasonably expect a PS4 price drop?

Not for a while, they'll go the "value add" route until forced to do otherwise,You'll see things like larger hdd, extra controller, 12 month plus subscriptions and free games increasing over the next year or so. Although I'm not sure how many people would want on, them getting the camera out as standard before Morpheus releases could be something that we see moving forward.

No price drops until Xb1 drops it to 299$, then we will see a 50$ price drop on PS4. Until then bigger HDD for 399$, maybe announced at Paris or TGS this year

My money is on Paris Games Week announcement. $/€299. They should not wait until Xbox starts threatening their lead in US and UK. They should prevent it from happening.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Nope. Velocity is good, inventory is good, bundles are working. No real incentive to.

Disagree

They are still the best selling console, but numbers have slowed.

As another poster said though. Could be people were waiting on that Batman bunduru. June, July, and August will be interesting across the board sales wise for all 3 companies.

PS: Not that I think we will get a price drop. I think Sony will try and value add hard first.

The 360 had a 400$ sku until late in its life span. I think they up the storage, package some games probably a 350 bundle at BF. Sony still needs money and as long as they are outselling the competition they'll be content.

I think we can expect it for March 2017, once the upcoming huge of great games is over. To celebrate the 50 millions units sold.

I wasn't making it up, I was saying it from how I remembered it, I just might've been wrong. They announced 18.5 million, then 20.2 million, and then 22.3 million (which might've been shipped). They haven't said anything about sales since then, and I think that was March

So exactly what I said then.... they've only announced one sell through number for 2015.

It all depends on sales velocity. If Xbone is able to swing sales trends to its favor by a significant margin. I'd expect a drop. If not, then why reduce profit if you're hitting your sales numbers anyway?

This is the most reasonable answer.

Anybody that posts it should drop to $300 needs to slap themselves before finishing the sentence.

I predict that it will drop to $300 in time for the holiday season. End sentence.

I'm not asking for anyone who disagrees with me to slap themselves, because, opinions.

This holiday.

Sony doesn't need to drop the price anytime soon...I don't think they will until Spring 2016. Anybody else agree?

I disagree. Why delay it to Spring? If you are going to do it, you do it before Christmas.

Sure, they don't "need" it, but what's $50 bucks in the long term if they persuade a few more people to go PS instead of Xbox due to the price? Because MS is bringing the heat this holiday (in the US at least), I would say getting consumers buying games on PS for years to come is a more important business decision than being $50 more expensive.

If Microsoft starts pushing alot of units this holiday and start closing in I bet Sony will slash the price and then introduce a slim model.

Why drop the price for the holidays when they are dominating the market?

Define dominating? WW sure, but in the end NA is the biggest and most influential market, they already got outsold in April or whatever, no games, people just decided to buy more Xbox. They will get easily outsold this holiday in NA at the current price.

Sometimes needs to be done in Canada, anyway. Price drop, more diverse choice of bundles, whatever. Your options are $450 for the Last of Us bundle or $500 for the Batman bundle. E3 convinced me that I need a PS4, but until something is done about the hardware situation, I'm not jumping in.

I expect a 1TB model to release in the next few months. Once that lands, they'll likely drop the 500gb to $349 to phase that one out. I think we'll see the first permanent price drop early next year.

Hmm If they don't drop the price this year then next year I expect them to drop it to $299.

I fully expect Batman AK to help move some PS4's this month and I suspect it'll do some damage for them. They can then ride out this wave until Sept. i assume the Batman bundle will be available for the foreseeable future. I would be shocked if they don't have a bundle for MGSV. It's like the only AAA game releasing that month and they could stand to get some sales from that.

This holiday will be huge for them as well. Console sales will be huge regardless and I think with COD and Battlefront in the month of Nov. Sony could really have a huge month.

I guess my overall point is. While a price drop would help. All in all. Sony has made good deals and partnerships that ensure their console will keep selling.

Should have had one by now, at least to $350. It's selling alright, but the majority of sales out are out there and those customers will not even look at a system above $300. At $399 it will continue to sell to the core, but it's not at mass market yet.

$299 seems so low.

I don't understand how this stuff works. I thought PS4 was already being sold close to cost? So wouldn't $300 be at a loss? Or does production cost go down after a year?

Sorry if this post was in ignorance. The $300 price being thrown around by a lot of people seems really low.

Edit: someone explained to me below why this is possible.

Don't expect a price drop, anticipate a sale or always be on the lookout for s special deal which someone will most likely post on GAF. There's also holidays coming up, 4th of July, then there's black Friday and the holidays. Wasn't there a deal where the PS4 could be had with 4 games and 1 year of plus for $400-450, be on the lookout for those.

What I want personally is a PS3 pricedrop, really thought Sony would announce one at E3, but Sony is all about the PS4, didn't even or hardly mentioned PS3 or Vita at the conference.

They lost April by 13K units because there was a trade in deal that if you traded in your last gen systems you'd get credit for an Xb1. Not to mention these months are always slow.

I think the One could take October as Halo is releasing that month but I think November is a toss up. Sony has partnered with two of the biggest games releasing that month. COD and Battlefront. No doubt they'll have a bundle for those games and do something for Black Friday.

I think the gap is around 600k and I think at best it'll stay flat until we get to October.

It shouldn't have one this year if Sony can't get it to $299.

Holiday 2016 at the latest seems like the safest bet.

Don't expect Sony to support the PS3 or Vita in any real meaningful way from now on. I would like a PS3 price drop. To at least $99. I'd at least buy another one.

It's not dropping in price, and there's really no reason to do it. More bundles and $50 gift cards during holiday season is how I see Sony go about it.

Economies of scale.
Both Sony and Microsoft have some deal with AMD for the production of their respective APUs, and it's fairly standard business practice to reduce the cost as time goes and tens million of units are produced. And the same goes for every supply partner they work with.
So, they actually may have sold the PS4 at cost during launch, but they're certainly making some good money from each sold console today.

I don't see the point. Microsoft is going to all out give away their console again this year with temp price reduction + free games + gift cards. At least in the US and UK. Sony is confidently winning at all other times worldwide at a $50 price disadvantage.

A little off topic, but I don't understand how people can still argue that the PS4 sales will be "front-loaded" after selling incredibly well for 2 years at its launch price. That's pretty insane/unheard of.
