Nutrition Thread |OT| You Can't Outwork A Shit Diet

I lost a shit load of weight. Something like 120lbs.

Ever since I've had a problem with water retention. I can gain 10+lbs in a few days easily.

If course that freaks me out pretty bad. Plus i am relatively constipated, with only twp bowl movements a week. How do I avoid this. I drink about 3 quarts of water a day and my dietary balance is relatively balanced. If I go out to dinner or something shit hits the fan though.

For the weight fluctuation that is not abnormal. I went to bed at 239 on sunday and woke up at 230.5 this morning.

Regularity(ahem, Colonic Motility) is about fiber, especially vegetable fiber, and Coffee.

Anyone know of a website or app (android) that lets me add in a bunch of ingredients then tell it the serving size and it will give me the macro breakdown?

Easymode is to build a quick excel/google sheet and add all the macros together.

Just use calorie king/google/usda/label for ingredient macros/sodium/etc.

Then add the recipe as single item of food on MFP

You can set up all the serving sizes and whatnot. Saves the trouble of trying to find obvious items on the MFP database that should be there.

Plus when MFP tanks one day you have all your recipes saved

I'm trying that now. I want to add a green bell pepper but it asks me how many grams. Heck I don't know. One bell pepper's worth lol. It's not very intuitive.

pretty much why I stopped using that app.

Back then, anything that wasn't in their barcode catalogue, you had look for it yourself.

If I understood correctly, there were entries for things not in their catalogue from random users you could use, so if you searched for "banana" you'd get a shitton of entries like " Big sized african Banana, not cooked" and " medium sized african banana, cooked"...exactly how you put it, not intuitive at all.

Is weight watchers bread really effective in losing weight, or...

Two slices are 80 calories, that seems insane. What the hell is in it

Not sure where you're looking. The nutritional information I was able to find said 2 slices (42g) = 100 calories. Mrs. Baird's, for example, is 2 slices (56g) = 140 calories. You're getting smaller slices of bread. Also, obligatory...

I found the same when I first started using it, but after a steep learning curve, you begin to understand the rough size of things you use if you weigh them once or twice. I'm about 120 days in to using MyFitnessPal, and it takes me probably 5 minutes on most days now.

Also, unless you're trying to count every single calorie and every single gram, then choosing any ingredient that seems close is fine, particularly with fresh vegetables and fruit. There's enough variability in produce that you'll inevitably choose the wrong thing anyway.

Two slices of a "light rye" bread (35g slices) that I eat ("Helga's" brand) are 170 calories, so it doesn't sound any better than other bread to me. That same brand is 190 calories for two slices of their wholemeal bread (40g slices).

Edit: Oh, 80 calories for two slices. Yeah, that's lower than other bread I guess though. Probably a lot smaller I bet. Skip bread (including wraps!) if you can.

Well I made some keto chili and I want to know the macros of one cup of it. That's really all I wanted it for.

I've put a bunch of recipes in - some I reuse, some I only use once and never touch again. At some point I realised that since everything varies, even processed goods but especially produce, that I'm not going to follow it as gospel, and will put in as close as I can find without making myself crazy.

For me, MyFitnessPal is to try and reduce the bad things like salt, sugar, fat, and try to better target my macros. It's not a weight loss tool for me (although I actually have lost weight, and am trying to put it back on).

Yep, breakfast is useless. Best to skip it and remain fasting.

Exactly. It's literally impossible to convince people otherwise, though. the "breakfast is the most important meal of the day!" sentiment is too strong. People actually tell me I'm going to die/starve to death if I don't eat breakfast.

God forbid I NOT EAT when I'm not hungry at 10AM. Crazy!

Looking at recipes while on a fast is like erotic fiction, watching Food Network is porn, and going to the grocery store must be akin to going to a gentlemans club.

The fucking gym has the Food Network playing 24/7. It's just the most delicious looking burgers on a screen, all the time. Meanwhile, it's like 6PM and I haven't eaten yet. Torture.

So I'm reading conflicting info on whether its ok for digestive system to eat carbs with protein, like chicken and rice. Some say its safe and others say its not good for your stomach.

what do you guys think?

Can you provide some links to the articles that are saying it is poor for your stomach?

It's not safe. That's why everyone who eats carbs with protein are sick and dying.

Oh wait..

Yeah, as asked above, can you provide sources for this? It's hard to say if it's bullshit entirely without at least seeing a source. Sounds like BS though.

It hasn't been proven to be unsafe.

However, eating protein and carbs together is better for insulin response than eating carbs alone.

Also, these past few days, especially yesterday and today, I've been having a really bad cough. I'm not sick, but I'm guessing it has to do with cottage cheese I started to eat everyday. It was only three days a week id eat cottage cheese, but now its everyday. I usually eat it with my cooked egg whites everyday (started to eat egg whites everyday too).

its either the egg whites or the cottage cheese. I already eat yougurt and drink milk everyday.

gonna have to do process of elimination.

That's not actually true. My missus gets a reaction to dairy that causes acid reflux which causes her to cough incessantly. She has to take a drug called Omeprazole to alleviate it.

So many anti-breakfast folks here! Do what best works for you but I need my 4 eggs with mixed veggies and black coffee every morning. Its a very light breakfast for sure but I love it.

Runners I know run in the morning so I could see how a nice breakfast fuels them for a big morning run. Unless that isn't necessary either. What do I know except that I need my eggs and coffee in the morning. :p

That's the thing though, there's a difference between "what suits you" and "you must because".

As for fasted endurance... it just takes time to get used to. It's horrible to start with, but has benefits once you're adapted to it.

Yeah, your body's ability to burn fat for energy (which increases through adaptation) will extend the time it takes for you to be come glycogen depleted (hitting the wall). Of course, it wont make any difference to your aerobic endurance, so you could still very well blow up before you hit that point anyway. :)

That's more like it ATM... Damn my accident prone body :(

On a sort nutrition related note, I did a monster (for me) session last week I spent the next day wanting to eat everything, I refrained but it was damned hard, should I of had something after the workout that would of helped?

Is intermittent fasting a real/proven thing?

If so, how long should I be fasting for daily? 12 hours, or longer like 16 hours?

Real/proven for what purpose? Will it help you magically lose fat? No. Does it make losing fat easier? Yes, in a way. Are there possible health benefits? Yes.

I'm curious if it will help me maintain my current weight and about the possible health benefits.

How many hours a day of fasting would be needed for this?

It's legit, but your food quality still matters.

You can fast for 16 hours per day and eat within 8 hours. To make it easier include your daily sleep in your fasted total. So you will be fasting 8 hours awake, which is basically a late lunch.

It's crazy convenient once you get adapted.

Some people do full day fasts once a week instead of fasting daily.

I recommend it for those who want to maximize their body composition. If you're a bit chubby, I would focus on food quality first. Fasting is good once you got your nutritional house in order.

Doesn't hurt to try, though.

I'm not doing the IF plan but for me doing something like it made it easier for me to eat what I consider regular sized meals and lose weight. I don't eat from 8pm till 11am and can eat 2 700 calorie meals without killing the rest of my day. I'm only eating about 1600 calories a day though.

The only real value to IF is the potential convenience of consolidating your eating. All the other claims are unsubstantiated at this point.

Tomorrow I go on vacation and I'm absolutely dreading it.

I know I'm going to put on like 20-30 lbs in water weight. It will be the beginning of the end of everything I worked for. Just from eatting the same stuff my family will be eatting.

And before anyone says that is impossible, shut up. I saw it happen. My birthday I went from 165 to 179 in two fucking days.

I'm doomed. Even worse, I'm going to balloon to like 300 this time.

Last time I lost weight, I went from 265 to 220. Ballooned up to 285 afterwards.

This time will be far worse

Why don't you start weight training? I know you're struggling with some issues right now. But it seems you put way too much thought on food alone for health.

Food matters a lot. I agree. But being active will help your body composition goals, especially weight training.

If it's just water weight then so fucking what? It comes off.

Anyway with that mentality you are setting yourself up for fat gain and binging by essentially saying "boohoo it's inevitable". No it isn't. Take some control in your eating habits. You can still eat the same foods, just eat less. Either skip breakfast (helps keep calories lower) or if you go into a buffet or something use smaller plates to force yourself eat less.

Your current mindset isn't really healthy for what you want to accomplish.

As stated... don't eat what your family is eating, or if you do, eat less of it.

I've literally sat there at breakfast and lunch with water or a coffee and not eaten a single thing whilst others are stuffing their faces on all sorts of delicious smelling stuff. Why? Because I eat from 5pm to 12pm.

MTFU.

I've switched to eating at 6pm, so I take my sweet time and sometimes I don't finish eating till 10. Sometimes I end up not getting home till 10 and eat then sleep. I've come to appreciate not eating during the day quite a bit. I feel better not having to force food down quickly at work.

It occurs to me that I've been doing IF for about two years now. I do have the occasional day off (usually when I'm on a cycling event), but on the whole it fits me perfectly.

I love IF and it fits my lifestyle perfectly... but it is the worst shit if you still live with your parents.

holy christ do they bust my balls about it. every day. I've been doing it for 8 fucking months now. they think I'm starving myself. they can't fathom the fact that I don't eat breakfast. I just try to ignore them but it's annoying as hell. it's gotten to the point where they walk up to me with cereal, milk already poured in the bowl, forcing it in my face like I'm a 2 year old. the joys of living with an old school Italian family!

yet here I am still fat as fuck. god forbid I don't eat when I'm not hungry!

Anyone ever have kidney issues when bulking?

Kidney stones run in my family and although I've had issues in the past, they've disappeared since my water intake went up and I became cautious of eating certain things.

I'm 5'9" @ 160lbs and about 10 days into a bulk where I'm eatin about 3200 calories a day. My kidneys started to flare up a little yesterday and I'm wondering if it's due to the increase in protein from about 120g per day to well over 200g (following a 40/30/30 macro split).

Im cutting down today and replacing lost protein calories with carbs to see how it goes. Also focused on keeping the water moving through my system.

Anyone experience this?

Ha, was going to ask if you were Italian by the time I got to the end of the first couple of sentences... and there it is. :D

yup lol

I've shown them articles and tried to explain to them how it's completely healthy (and that I've lost close to 30 pounds since I started with it)... no dice. they don't believe the internet. "a doctor would never tell you to do this".

I literally just got a text from my dad: "please eat the three meatballs we left for you at lunch" -_-
