My friends, I have recently arrived to Philly from Australia. Been living here for 1 month now, and I got a year basically, possibly more. Doing a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship and it's been going good till now. Love the city, it seems to have a lot to offer. I have been given general advice about where to go/not go, things to do and it's perfect till now. Was really surprised to find this thread, it was sort of a godsend. Do you guys ever meet up and go for beers/dinner ever? Would be good to meet to locals here and have a night out in the city...

Awesome! Where in Australia are you from? I studied at James Cook University in Townsville for a semester a few years ago.

We haven't actually done a meetup yet, actually. I guess we're all reclusive or something.

The cold weather made my tires lose air pressure last night. I filled one tire before I said fuck it because I was risking frostbite. The cold was one thing, but the wind yesterday made it unbearable.

Hey are there laws about flying drones around landmarks (City Hall, Liberty Bell)? I'm at 5th and Market and want to fly my new toy around on my launch break. Don't wanna get a ticket.

I could have gone to a legal seminar on drone law but skipped it for something else I thought would be more practical... Actually kinda regretting that now haha.

So while I don't know anything about drone law, to be safe I wouldn't fly it near Independence Mall or any of the Old City historical sites. I imagine you're mostly fine elsewhere though.

Yay, the soda tax is in effect.

It's going to help fund the pockets of politicians local Pre-K programs.

My coworker and I had fun looking at all the price changes at Wawa at lunchtime today. I decided to buy a Gatorade (still went up in price a bit) instead of a Cherry Coke though, because of the price change. But I'm 99% sure I'll stop caring in a week.

I bought a 99cents SunnyD and after the tax it was $1.89. This has effectively made me stop buying this stuff in the city. The wife works on City Line Ave so I'll just go to the Acme there for big purchases or buy Kool-aid and sugar and just go old school.

The idea that this type of tax will be an effective revenue stream for the city is absolutely insane. This is the problem with having a bunch of the same party members in office at the once. There is no checks and balances. Can't manage the books, raise taxes. Yet the fucking DROP program still has a gaping loophole.

Yes the method is to simply generate funding for PreK it isn't gonna work at all. The idea is just bad and it won't generate funding for anything it's a deterrent to buy, therefor funding will fall short. Like the cigarette tax which is 26 million behind....

You know what would've been better? Legalized marijuana, Tax and Regulate that possibly generating billions a year.

Or cut all the pensions that retired politicians are getting.

i'd love to get 100K a year for doing nothing.

I'm very okay with quaint little 1-2 inch snowfalls occasionally. Hell it could happen once a week and I'd be happy. It doesn't over stay it's welcome and it provides a bit of serenity.
