GB/GBC/GBA Collecting Thread

I've got an older one, no. (the SD card is a pain to get out btw, ugh)

But the update process should be the same, no? You need to hold R and then turn it on, and keep holding it until the update process has started. You doing it that way?

What bin are you using by the way? I updated using the one from the official EZ flash site and only then installed the improved theme bin for what it's worth.
I'll try using the official one first, that's a good idea.

No dice. I'm thinking maybe the micro to mini SD adapter I have is dying. It's weird though cause I've had this thing for years and it's worked flawlessly. I can boot games with no problem, too, from both SD and NOR. Kinda perplexed.

nope, it's my SD card itself. Got it to boot the .bin with a different microSD card.

Ah, glad you got it sorted. I know micro to mini SD adapters are supposed to be wonky on EZ Flash IV, or at least it was that way with the old one because I'm not sure if that ever changed. I know using one isn't recommended. But I've been using one on mine for ages with no trouble.

So it could be that your SD card is still fine for other stuff for what it's worth!

yeah, i think the SD card and adapter are both individually fine but for some reason the combination isn't working. Ordered a new 16GB card to load up, and will use this card for my EDGB. For now this is working, though.

Oh hey, I had no idea we weren't limited to 2GB anymore. Is that a new model thing only? I guess I'll have to look into that tomorrow.

no, that was one of the previous firmwares adding better compatibility for SD cards. Now supports SDHC on all models (so up to 32GB, I believe, though you might be able to stretch that with funky formatting). The only difference for the new one afaik is a spring-loaded microSD slot instead of the spring-less miniSD slot of the old model. And the color of the case.

So which metroid game should I play in prep for Samus Returns? Zero Mission?

Very nice, I totally missed that update being a thing. So I'm all set then, I guess I'm getting a new SD card too.

I think a lot of people would say Super is a must, but going with Zero Mission only makes sense to me considering it's the remake of Metroid 1, and Samus Returns is of course the 2 remake. It's also a pretty short game, so preparing for Samus Returns through it will take no time at all. Man, I really love that game.

But really, Metroid Fusion? Pretty short too! I think you'd be able to squeeze Zero Mission, Super and Fusion in your schedule and still end up with a pretty reasonable total playtime. It's what I plan to do.

I have Super on my super fami so I should definitely get to that before I put this thing back in to storage. Was mostly thinking between Fusion and Zero Mission, like you said though. Playing Zero Mission atm and then maybe Fusion or I'll skip right to Super. We'll see.

I think leaving Fusion for last makes the most sense, but either way I feel like playing Zero Mission first is the right call, yeah.

Huh, I didn't realize the EZ Flash IV had been updated for on the fly patching, it relied on this really annoying program in the past. Happened only recently too. Neat.

Wait how do I get this! My EZFIV is dusting around in some corner, I hate dealing with it.

edit: oh, they kept releasing fw updates for it? lol I'm so out of touch with this.

It's amazing they have been constantly supporting it all this time. I just wish the one I had worked better. The NOR is busted I think. And I had to slip a small piece of paper under the contacts so it wouldn't give me a false "battery is dry" error.

Seems that gba sps with bad screen (001) aren't worth that much.

I found my old red sp complete with a pretty mint box. No charger though.

Not sure what to do with it. I have a ds lite to play gba games.

Yeah, it's just a fw update. You download the latest (2.01) ezfla_up.bin file, put it on the root of your SD card, hold R and turn your GBA on and keep holding R until the update process gets going (which should be pretty instantaneous. This is also how you install nicer themes like the one I linked to earlier. I'm pretty sure that file should work as the update too? I dunno, I did it in two steps myself.

I really need to get an Everdrive GBA. EZ Flash is a hassle, as someone who is primarily in OSX... Edit: I too missed the newest updates for it, will have to check them out.

Thought you guys might get a kick out of this though, an early prototype for Meet the Robinsons on the GBA from many months prior to its release.

Anyone want to talk about video games?

Been playing Kirby's Adventure and it got me thinking about Kirby's Dreamland 2. Dreamland 2 has been my favorite in the series for a long while, but compared to Adventure the copy abilities on offer are pretty weak.

No sword, the best item in Adventure, but Parasol is still here? And very prominently, it's the first item you get. Fire is gone but burning is still in place. You can fire with that + Rick but it kinda sucks. Ice is a lot more annoying to use. No beam, no UFO, no weird powerups that you only get once or twice.

I mean I get that they had to make some compromizes to bring the copy abilities to Gameboy at all but they could have made some better choices here.

I find the Kirby games kinda blur together for me. Guess my favourite would be Amazing Mirror, but mostly because it was the first I really got in to.

Funny, I have been playing kirby's adventure this weekend, too. I have never played Dream Land 2, and I started thinking about it after playing adventure. And Amazing Mirror jumped out at me after checking a list of Kirby games. It's all open, like a Metroidvania lite? Sounds awesome to me. Worth getting?

I'd say so. And yeah, it's nonlinear like a metroidvania. Lots of little secrets and winding pathways and a good diversity of powerups and enemies.

Kirby + Metroidvania sounds like peanut butter and chocolate to me! Definitely going to pick this one up. I was always curious about Amazing Mirror but never got around to trying it.

Also, have any of you played Guru Logi Champ? I was looking for a GBA picross game and came across it. It is so much fun! Very cool take on the genre with hilarious cut scenes and animations.

I only played the GB Kirbys for the first time about two years ago. If I remember right, what bothered me about Dreamland 2 was having to replay a stage when losing an animal buddy to get to those secrets. Something about it felt more cumbersome than in other games where that's perfectly normal.

I discovered Guru Logi Champ about 13 years ago....It is probably my favorite puzzle game of all time and in my top 5 GBA games too. Absolutely awesome game that I wish had made it over to the west. Luckily it is fully and easily playable. Always happy to hear people discover its greatness!

I would love to find the actual cart for a reasonable price because I've always wanted to own a copy even though I've pretty much stopped collecting games these days.

I'd go with order of release minus the first 2.

Super is one of the GOAT's and deserves to be played by everyone. Zero Mission and Fusion took the controls and feel of super and refined them just a little more. I Think because of that Super should be played first.

If you are tight on time you should just play through Zero Mission. It's a remake of the first and its a quick game to finish

Yeah, like I said I'll be playing super at some point regardless. Think I've decided to play zero mission, then super. My superfami has been sorely neglected lately so I've been meaning to put it back in storage. Good a time as any to knock out the only game I have for it that I haven't beaten.

That EZ Flash IV update is a game changer. It's so much nicer to use.

Spent like 3 hours today updating some of the hacks in my library and downloading some bug fixes and stuff to load up my new SD card. Honestly the first time in a while I've had a good day of gaming. Success in Monster Hunter, Counter Strike, with my PS2 and my gameboy. Good shit.

Now y'all got me tempted to get an ez flash. I went with the everdrive but the cart size is a no go in the micro!
Yeah, I just can't get in to the everdrive when it sticks out of the micro the way it does. When a revision comes up that fits in the normal GBA shell and has an RTC, i'll probably pick one up.

I hadn't thought about the Micro. Does the EZ allow you to play GB and GBC games on the Micro? Or was there some hardware limitation in that device that locks out that software?

You can use Goomba to emulate GB/C games, but compatibility isn't perfect and the screen it obviously tiny.

The new update has certainly made me feel really good about my EZ Flash. I had been tempted by the Everdrive but I can wait a good long time for a revision now, the IV is really nice now.

I saw a 3 wire AGS101 wire harness on ebay. I was about to do my mod when someone brought it to my attention. Apparently, you can get the full brightness from your AGS 101 and also be able to dial in the brightness in the battery compartment. Has anyone tried this wire yet?

Looks like a Neogaf user has this mod. Unsure if she did it herself or not but I am looking for a soldering guide for this mod.

Hi guys!

I have a decent GB, GBC and GBA games (mostly bought on release date) and consoles collection (about 70 games and about 20 consoles, mostly GB Micros), all of them full with boxes and manuals.

I'm starting to get worried as all of the games come in cardboard boxes and, while they are still in mint condition, I'd like to protect them a bit more. I found some plastic boxes on eBay that look good:

The question is… have you guys tried those? What do you use to keep your cardboard box games safe? I was about to order a pack of those but I guess it's better to ask the experts here first ;)

It looks like a ribbon adapter with a voltage regulator built-in. You might be able to use this soldering guide: https://www.retromodding.com/blogs/tutorials/voltage-regulator-connection-guide

I have the snes/64 ones as well and I have nothing but good things to say about them!

What makes you unsure about that?

I have the pic guide for this somewhere but it will take a little digging. That seller would send you the guide though I'm sure.

I use them for my boxed NES games. Great stuff. Buy them. But of an investment when you get many at once but it's worth it. Kind of gives your games a nice, shiny look on the shelf. You won't regret it.

All my games are box protected.

I even got custom ones made for Mark III and Sega MycCard since none were available.

I actually need to get some customs done for small Famicom pulse line size (Japanese GBA suits medium Famicom boxes quite well), and the two main sizes of Japanese GB games (small eg Mario Land, and large eg Zelda).

Bought a replacement Game Boy Color which I've been enjoying outside recently, and today I decided to buy a Game Boy Light for the larger screen.

Any recommendations of cheap and common action or puzzle games on the Game Boy? I'm not going to buy boxes.

Been enjoying lots of Donkey Kong 94, Tetris DX and Wario Land 2 is clumsy but good too.

Okay, so you're looking for original GB games, and not color ones for your Game Boy Light, correct? If so here are some I love (only puzzle games for now):

Mario's Picross - Look up JAPAN4YOU and search for Picross in his store. They usually have cheap copies of Mario's Picross 1 & 2. It's Japanese, but is easy to play and navigate with zero Japanese knowledge. Hours of fun. The US version of the first game is a bit more expensive usually. Usually $15-$25 lose.

Catrap / Pit Man - I love this game. You can usually find it in the $10-$15 range loose. Awesome take on the Soukoban genre with a cool time rewind mechanic.

Boxxle - Screw the haters. Dirt cheap and tons of puzzles. Soukoban style puzzle (warehouse box-pushing puzzler)

Daedalian Opus - Super cheap and will keep you busy for a while. You fit various shapes into a preset pattern.

Kirby's Star Stacker - Cool stacking-style match puzzle game.

Thank you, this is what I needed. A lot of people don't do their own mods. It wasn't a slight on you, just didn't have the information if you did it yourself or not. I am fine doing some mods but I just had a rgb bypass board put on my snes mini recently. I am sure I could have done it, but it wasn't something I wanted to mess up nor was it something I had the time for. I have like 3 or 4 unfinished mods in my closet and this GBA AGS 101 mod is one of them.

I appreciate your help. Thanks again.

Edit. Just a quick question, does this 3 wire mod get as bright as the AGS 101 in the 2nd stage? I just want to know before I drop another $40 US on this.
