The Batman Rumored to Be Set in the 1990s

The Batman may also focus on a younger Bruce Wayne/Batman.

A new report suggests that The Batman, which once starred Ben Affleck, will be set in the 1990s and Penguin will be one of the main antagonists of the film.

Via Batman-News.com, DiscussingFilm.net has also said that The Batman will show us a younger version of the Dark Knight, as well as Commissioner Gordon and Bruce Wayne's trusty butler and friend Alfred Pennyworth.

The report further describes how director and writer Matt Reeves has adjusted the script a bit to add a bit more action, although the focus on the film will still be on Batman's detective skills and solving a mystery.

As for who will play Batman now that Ben Affleck has left the role, the report suggests an ideal candidate would be "a name actor...between 25 and 33 years old and will most likely not go for an unknown actor."

The Batman is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 25, 2021, and will reportedly begin filming around November.

For more on The Batman and Ben Affleck's departure, be sure to check out Affleck's comments on his frustration while working on a script for the film, Jimmy Kimmel's retirement ceremony for Affleck, and some of the best DC comics that Matt Reeves could adapt for the latest Batman film.

When is the Joker movie set? The 80s, right?

I think I am gonna audition for the role of Batman/Bruce. Need to add some Soy to the DC menu.

Since they are going the 90s route maybe we can get some good music this time, like Nine Inch Nails, or Smashing Pumpkins.

Would be hilarious if they play No Doubt too. Batman smashing criminal faces to the tune of "Don't Speak."

Now that I hear they’re going for the detective angle, the movie sounds like it could be worth making. That’s new.

I don't know why nobody brings up Joaquin Phoenix's Joker in relation to this movie. JOKER is set to take place in 1987. Bruce is maybe 11-13 years old in JOKER? (Maybe even 14 or 15?) The Batman is rumored to be set in the 1990s.

I just want some speculative talk bringing the two projects together.

I approve, especially if it's actually set in the early 90s.

I'm not surprised to read that Reeves has had to re-work the script to include more action sequences. I loved both Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War of the Planet of the Apes but heard some criticism that War in particular had a limited amount of action. Although a good Batman story should put a lot of emphasis on his Detective work, there also should be a fair amount of action also. I really hope that the action is of the same calibre as the warehouse sequence in BvS as well (the only thing that movie did well).

90s huh? Well I guess it'll keep Batman's tech in the more "traditional" style and eliminate stuff like cell phones everywhere.

The report is by no means a confirmation that this is going to be the case, so everyone is advised to take it with pinch of salt. But if it does come to fruition, it's curious if The Batman will have any narrative connections to either the established lore with the DCEU or the brand new one they're looking to kick off with Joker. Reeves confirmed back in 2017 that the film will be interconnected with the DCEU, but there were a lot of changes since he's made the comment that it's curious if that still holds up. Meanwhile, last year, a report claimed that the movie's continuity will be based on people's reception of their upcoming slate. Prior to that, a separate intel suggested that the film might be interconnected with the Joaquin Phoenix- starrer.

Today’s technology can capture it alright, I’ll 100% back a 90s throwback Batman flick.

It's tough to say, with Joker as you mention, but also because the upcoming Suicide Squad isn't a sequel to the first one. I have heard/read though that DC plans on fully embracing the concept of alternate universes/canons (as they do in the comics, in some cases), and one example of that is that there will be a few different Joker movies. I'm curious to see how that will turn out, because I guarantee it will confuse a majority of the audience.

I hope it won't be too grounded in reality like Nolan's trilogy. Gotham should look like it does in Burton's movies and 90s animated series.

I've read JOKER will be run like Robert DeNiro's Taxi Driver meets The King Of Comedy. Imagine hearing The Joker's thoughts as the movie progresses. I wouldn't mind if it's shot that way, too. And I wouldn't mind if The Batman is shot similarly. Hearing his thoughts. His detective deductions. Awesome.
