PlayStation Store codes for full games will no longer be provided to retailers

This only applies to digital codes for full game downloads for specifc games.

This doesn’t apply to PSN credit available in denominations of $5, $10, $20, etc.

It’s bizarre how many people are defending this clearly anti consumer move. How does this do anything other than hurt consumer choices?

People trade in games at game stop etc and often get digital download codes in return. Now that option is completely gone, pretty shitty.

And how about parents who want to buy a game as a gift that is a digital download? Or codes to purchase in game items, as a gift? That option is gone now too. How many parents/grand parents are sophisticated enough to buy codes on psn to hand out as gifts? Many, but also quite a few who’d have no clue.

Sucks.
While it personally doesn't affect me this just seems like taking an option away from customers to the benefit of no one but Sony.

Everyone pushing the wireless digital cloud streaming future and Sony going backwards, demanding physical.
That's my Sony.

I think it's more like they want digital buyers to just buy directly from PSN since they probably get bigger cut from the profits there

You can still buy store credit though.
It's just the codes fro actual games that are gone.

Thread title:
PlayStation Store codes will no longer be provided to retailers
What actually is happening:
[...]starting April 1st. Digital games will only be available straight from PSN after that date. Add-on content/PSN $ cards will still be available

You can still buy the physical games from said game stores right? Why offer both digital and physical in the same store? Also, you can still purchase DLC from the store as there are no physical equivalents.

Yeah...for a moment i was like "WTF???"

Mods should edit the title. OP should be thankful that this is not the old GAF because otherwise he would have got a very nice vacation.

Title is fine and copied over from the article, which is from a Tweet.
If people bothered to read they might have came to the same conclusion as everything that needs to be said is in the first post.

Looks like Sony is trying to cut out the middle man and hoard all digital sales. Why sell code cards which BB or GS can make a few bucks, when the gamer will just buy it direct from PSN.

I don't think PSN has digital gifting does it?

What if someone wants to buy a digital game for someone?

I'm sorry but it isn't "fine".It's actually misleading because based on the title someone would think that PSN credit codes would also stop being available which isn't the case.Lots of people are browsing GAF quickly from their phones and only read the thread titles in order to get their information.

A better title would have been "full game digital download codes will no longer be available to retailers."

They have to overpay for the game by buying set-increment PlayStation Store currency cards. For example, here in Massachusetts, the cost of a new game with tax is $63.74. There aren’t any PlayStation Store cards for that amount, so a gift-giver will have to buy a minimum of $70 ($10 is the smallest denomination in stores). That’s an overpayment of $6.23. A gift-giver’s tax, if you will.

Next time I'll ignore an author's choice and add flashing lights with bells and whistles so the lazy, quick surfing, thread-title only reading users will surely notice it.
It's almost like one forgot the boat to QQera...
Also since it bothers you so much, if you haven't already you can use the report button and have it sorted out quickly by a mod.

Don't see the issue here. How many people go to a brick and mortar to buy digital goods? Sony constantly puts on PlayStation Store sales which don't even reflect in these stores.

This is what I was thinking. It isn’t like those digital games in GameStop or wherever are ever on sale anyway.

Dude i don't have a problem with you. Relax. :) It's just that i don't like clickbait titles. But i understand that it wasn't your intention and you just copied the title (i accidentaly did this too in the past before i realized that the title wasn't matching the actual article)
I'm sorry if it sounded as if i was personally attacking you.

Same way they do it now with buying PSN cards. Which retailer sells full games as codes? Any links?

Actually it was (to keep in tact as provided) as I see no problem with it, people see what they want and we are at disagreement because one does and the other doesn't.
It is precisely because I don't want or like hit and run posts, reading or threads that I left it intact, we have better conversations when people actually read and that's all in the first post they can't miss it.

Here in the USA codes for games can be purchased at GameStop, Walmart, best buy, target, etc,etc...... hopefully they go on sale now that Sony is not selling them any longer.

The problem is that the author you chose to quote made a purposely click bait driven title. Knowing that some people only read the title it would have been wise to change it.

Ok, so when you buy a $20 gift card and you use it to buy a game for $19.99 you still have to pay taxes. You either need to buy another gift card to cover the taxes or you have to link up a credit/debit card or a PayPal account. This becomes confusing when people buy a card for a full game and then find out that they have to pay the tax when they go to redeem it.

What needs to happen is that retailers need to charge tax on the cards instead of Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft doing it at their checkout.

Sounds like a good way to piss off retailers.

Also, some people need a digital game in a form that to be presented as a gift, especially if they know the recipient prefers digital games. One might also prefer to purchase things in cash.

I find this move especially audacious by Sony. It's a bigger deal than it's being made out to be IMO.

Your preferences of how others would act has exactly zero bearing on proper form for reporting news.

If you used the original title, the original title was wrong. If you liked the original title, you were wrong to intentionally reuse it, because it's factually incorrect.

Trying to say that you left it somehow factually incorrect in order to encourage reading comprehension, so that next time the person will know to read an article in its entirety to ensure that the title isn't wrong, was wince inducing and painful to read. This is a long-winded way of saying "Oh, I was uh, just testing ya bro!"

So you give a gift card/code for a full game but when your nephew goes to redeem it, he finds out that he can't until he adds more money to his account because of the tax. See the problem here?

These stores just recently started charging tax and that is why I believe this is happening now.

So in other words, Sony was only complacent with this practice because having to pay for the tax facilitated a transaction on their own store.

Interesting thought. Cynical, and likely true.

When you buy a full game on PSN/Nintendo eShop/Live Marketplace, you still have to pay the tax. The problem is that retailers don't charge tax on gift cards so Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft have to do it. You can expect to see others following suit here.

As long as I can still buy PSN money I am fine with this. The reason why I buy PSN codes is because they won't take credit cards issued outside your home region. Even from PayPal.

Last I heard, retailers make pennies on the dollar with them, hence the GCU never covered those with Best Buy.

PSN has always charged tax in Texas since the PS3.

That would make sense. Most likely its not worth it for Sony and the retailers if they barely make anything. I’ve never went to a B&M to buy a digital game. The only console game I bought digital was when Gamestop online fucked up and sold Dying Light for like $20.

I feel like every 10 posts it needs to be repeated because there are some people throwing drama over nothing:

THEY ARE ONLY REMOVING FULL GAME DIGITAL CODE CARDS!

What is even the point of them when on PSN you have massive sales all the time. How many percent go to a store to buy a full game digitally? 2%? Yes thats why they are removing them because nobody wants to spend $60 on a digital code in a store when on the PSN that same game will be $10-$15 off in a month, which wont drop price in-store.

TOP UP CARDS AND ADD ONS ARE STAYING!

If you want to buy your kid a game, get him a physical copy or buy a top up of $50, $60 or $70.

Who actually goes in-store to buy a digital game? Never heard of this before. PSN credit I understand, and that's still available.

It was a good way of paying exactly the cost of the game without having to buy blocks of Sony bucks.

Going to a store to buy a digital download code is the stupidest thing ever.

And I don’t know why you as a gamer OR Sony as a corporation would want for retailers to get a cut of digital sales. What’s the point? They’re cutting out a senseless middleman that adds jack shit in terms of value or convenience.

GAF freaking the hell out about nothing as usual.

It's not a big deal and as expected, OP is big time misleading.

To be fair, I don't see what Sony is actually gaining from this.
I guess you could say they're reducing pollution by removing specific game cards and having them all basically be generic $10, $25 and $50 cards.

But it's not like that $6.23 is gone. It can be used for additional purchases.

You're free to post news yourself, better yet I'd like to see people take initiative instead.

The issue isn't whether you should be hanged for a misleading thread title; the problem is that you had a shit attitude when it was called out. That's what escalated this.

Your post is like CNN changing an incorrect title and saying to the person that pointed it out "I'd like to see you do better". Then when they defend themselves, CNN gets in an argument with them.

Not a good look.

Good to know you'll step up and not be a lazy ass leecher that criticize after the fact while doing nothing yourself, thanks bro :messenger_blowing_kiss:
It's reassuring that you'll be spending hours upon hours everyday to find interesting news, I resolved the thread title myself and can now retire peacefully.

I agree with most of the comments here saying the topic is mostly a non-issue but Shin Shin has a point here. Even if you disregard tax, since some states don't charge any, you still get stuck with useless digital currency cause most games cause $x.99 or $x.49 or whatever number they chose. Yes, everyone tends to round up and just consider those cents as negligible but it's still an insidious way to get more money out of the consumer. I consider this a different matter from the topic at hand but I can see Shin's point that digital game codes do serve as some sort of bandaid to the problem.

Rest assured, next time you make a mistake, instead of doing absolutely nothing about it before the fact, I'll take personal responsibility and do something about it by going back in time and making a different thread for the same news without the mistake.

This way, we can comfortably avoid all conflict in life whatsoever and rest easy. Bro.

I can't believe I'm starting to consider an Xbox for next-gen...the crazy number of negative signals Sony has been sending this past year after starting this generation so well, OMG.

The more I think about it, the more I am convinced that this option is actually for the better for Sony and consumers.

Think about it: Digital cards for specific games almost never go on sale at places like Gamestop, Walmart, etc. I see games that are several years old being sold for ~$20 physical, but the digital card versions are still $60. By forcing consumers to choose between physical and or generic PSN cards, they're actually creating the potential to save money or AT worst pay as much as they would a digital card version.

The FUD campaign seems to be working...

I'm not one to be convince by FUD campaign quite the contrary. But when and if there's a "FUD campaign", when it is so efficient that even Sony fans echo the same opinions, well maybe it's because Sony is doing crap, period.

And then there's the actual points: I don't care about most of those cited, but the fact that the PS is a fragmented line, that design of the last models is so ugly and the pro so fat, that the "boost mode" is well below expectation, that's there's ultra blu-ray reader to add to the fact there is no BC, and probably most importantly the fact that they sold their best studios like Quantic Dream or TGC, closed other like Guerilla Cambridge, and also that they are discontinuing their appearance at E3 which makes them look cheaper than Nintendo....yeah I have worry that Sony might just have a adopted a crap vision with scums white collars at it's head.

This doesn’t really affect me directly, but I still see it as a shitty thing to do. Going to affect kids whose parents don’t want their cc tied to kids account. Also going to put more pressure on retailers, who I don’t want to see exit the busness.
