During various updates happening today thanks to State of Play, Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed that PlayStation VR has sold a massive 4.2 million units as of March 3rd, 2019!

Sid Shuman said the following on the PlayStation Blog:
We’re also very excited to reveal that we have officially sold-through more than 4.2 million PS VR systems worldwide as of March 3, 2019. We’d like to thank our fans for the amazing support for helping us achieve the milestone.

PlayStation VR is the best selling premium VR headset, launching back in October 2016. A PS4 or PS4 Pro is required to use this peripheral.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
How many of those headsets are like mine: disconnected and sitting in a drawer, likely never to be re-attached to the console?

Less than a 5% attach rate. The mass market doesn’t give a fuck about VR. It’s a niche thing, and will be for a long time.

That's pretty good for a peripheral that launched late 2016. 4.2M in 2 and a half years. Didn't expect that.

Much like PS4 pro and Xbox one X. In fact I bet there are more PSVR out there than Xbox One X. Doesn't make a difference if it's not mass market as long as it gets continued support.

I will shit on Sony until the end of my days for their absurd censorship, but I will give them credit for making VR a mass market game system that actually succeeded. 10 year old me, with my dog eared, worn copy of Neuromancer is living a dream I had once given up. I wholehearted, completely, and without hesitation recommend the PSVR. I’ve got maybe 25-30 PSVR games and it never gets old. It stays amazing.

The hate is real, shit is disgusting. 4.5 million and selling more than even pc VR headsets is great! That is why Sony keeps supporting it, they know there is a future there and I'm glad. Ps5 and PSVR 2 cant come soon enough 😁.

Keep eating that crow propoganda spinners. We 👀👀u.

Actually, PSVR have a much higher attach rate than regular PS4 players. There maybe be fewer of us, but we each buy more games. A lot more.

It's truly a hard sell when the only way to know what's it all about is to experience it first hand. As Morpheus put it:

These were the last numbers we got of software sold/attach-rate (not that I care, but I was on the page anyway):
On August 16th, 2018, Sony announced that PlayStation VR had sold-through more than 3 million units and 21.9 million games worldwide as of August 16th, 2018.

The 360's Kinect sold 8 million units in 60 days and look where that tech is now. I don't think PSVR2 will be as popular as Sony want it to be.

Those were mostly bundled numbers and software sold like ass. It's not as cut and dry as ppl try to paint it.

He's stating the obvious with the % and any peripheral will seem bad in that regard.
In this case units sold and software sold is the bigger picture and more of importance within the VR space to Sony as well as the publisher/developer.
Especially since Sony themselves didn't expect to push big numbers with PSVR so it's within expectation perhaps (not sure, just saying that the Tweet reads as the sky is blue).

Whoops, I concede. I'm not doing the maths right. It's around 5%, but if you take into account that a PS4 itself is 8.7% attach rate, it's pretty good to be honest.

Kinect sales chart looks like a cliff because it fell off so drastically after a few months. PSVR has never seen that drop off in over 2 years. PSVR sales are improving quarter to quarter, slowly, but surely. It's not going anywhere, not to mention the attach rate is high for software.

Kinect sold a ton more. But it was a lot cheaper. In Canada, it was $150. So in the US it was maybe $100? PSVR is like $300? Kinect also got system bundles too.

Never the less, external gadgets for consoles will always be niche.

Imagine taking Daniel Ahmed seriously. That dude literally leaked PUBG's release date for the PS4 version just to get some "clout". I'd take two grains of salt and pepper before reading into his interpretations of the market.

I certainly hope you've gotten some of the latest games like Astro Bot, Tetris Effect, and Wipeout. You have an opportunity to play some of PS4's best games, period, so don't let it slip - not many people have the opportunity.

This was always expected. It's generation 1. The Magnavox Odyssey was a 1st generation console that couldn't even shift half a million units.

Kinect never had longevity. VR has longevity beyond almost all technologies.

I think until you have actually tried VR then you can't bash it. It's good fun, but until the graphics improve it won't replace gaming on a 4k monitor

That being said, very few people (at least on Steam) even have a 4K monitor. 4K TV adoption is much higher though.

VR is and will be a niche for the next few years. It will take off once you get 1440p or more per eye and the whole bundle with controllers and lighthouse for like 400 bucks. Till then it's more of a tech demo and early adopters playground then any real market. There's only a couple of games worth buying so no real casual consumer market.

Oculus Quest is exactly what you just asked for.

Quest won't take off mainstream though. What VR needs to truly take off is 4K x 4K per eye, wireless, full body tracking, eye-tracking, facial tracking, smaller form factor, and a killer app all at a $400 price point. The tech will happen in about 3 years, and hopefully the killer app will come sooner with Valve's games.

Only a couple of games worth buying huh? Righttttt. The lists have been made and I'm sure you've seen them so I won't go Into it.

I also refute your 400 price point assessment. We've already had PSVR drop to 200 and it was sold out for awhile and helped it reach that extra one million plus Sony has now claimed. A 150 to 200 price point are what ppl want. Idc how advanced VR becomes or the resolution but ppl still won't buy it if it's as expensive as a console.

Pretty sure he's also the guy who predicted Xbox One would launch in "Oct or Dec" when it wasn't exactly known yet which month was release.

It launched in Nov.

I bet most if them are not being used any longer.

Like what do people expect to get from video game hardware? Justification of their very existence?

There are some really fun things on psvr, and so it is worthwhile if you aren’t expecting to find your life’s purpose and fulfilment in it. Sure it isn’t the jesus of gaming hardware, but it is damn fun.

I disagree. The graphics could be better, but I don't think the general audience really gives a shit about 1440p. The problem is that these headsets are big, bulky, and expensive - but the effect is immediate and grandiose, and people are sucked in.

I think it is there, game wise. VR has a killer app in Beat Saber - people are literally trying the game and going out and buying a PSVR the next day. A large number of the early games were glorified tech demos, or quicky ports like Skyrim (which is amazing in VR), but we're getting full VR experiences now. I dare anyone to play Astro Bot and tell me it is just a tech demo.

PSVR is there. It's the real deal. Now, not later. And the fact that Sony could fill 17 minutes of just PSVR announcements pretty much proves it.

I’ve tried it lots of times, and I still agree with the assessment that it’s the next step from Kinect.

Many of the “games”could have been made on the Kinect. All the shit Kinect get about “on rails” and forced movements all apply to VR, just now you have a TV strapped to your face.

It’s cool for 30-60 mins here and there, but there’s nothing that screams OMG about it, especially with all the fiddling around you have to do to calibrate it.

After trying Oculous, Vive and PsVR I’m convinced it’s no more ready now then it was when I tried it in the 90s.

Over the years, I've demoed mine to hundreds of people with constant across the board wow reactions. I'm still waiting for that one person in real life to tell me it's not impressive. Only on game forums does the opposite opinion seem commonplace..

How long are those demos?

I was wowed at first also, but The holes show quickly, also similar to the Kinect and the Wii.

If it’s for a couple hours over multiple demos, you can keep amazing them, but after the 10 hour mark you start to see the warts.

The first 3-4 hours can be amazing with the right set of games though.
