Sony Interactive Entertainment reveals that 4.2m PlayStation VR units were sold

I don't care about VR, but it's nice that Sony is doing it for the couple million people that do.

I doubt they'll do something stupid like force its adaptation with the PS5 as MS did with Kinect, so no harm to me.

me neither . sorry but. its not something i will play games on a lot. I would play something on it. or use it once every month. but as a gaming device. no. I'd like to be looking at a tv. sit relax on a couch and play.

I’ve tried it lots of times, and I still agree with the assessment that it’s the next step from Kinect.

Many of the “games”could have been made on the Kinect. All the shit Kinect get about “on rails” and forced movements all apply to VR, just now you have a TV strapped to your face.

It’s cool for 30-60 mins here and there, but there’s nothing that screams OMG about it, especially with all the fiddling around you have to do to calibrate it.

After trying Oculous, Vive and PsVR I’m convinced it’s no more ready now then it was when I tried it in the 90s.
Then you played no good games, that is very much a confirmation.

You can try listing games if you want, but the more good games you list, the more it shows you are lying.

No one that has tried the really high quality stuff would think it's in the same position as 90s VR, and would only be optimistic if they also looked at the R&D going into the 2nd generation.

How long are those demos?

I was wowed at first also, but The holes show quickly, also similar to the Kinect and the Wii.

If it’s for a couple hours over multiple demos, you can keep amazing them, but after the 10 hour mark you start to see the warts.

The first 3-4 hours can be amazing with the right set of games though.

Various timeframes. You can't just say everyone will be "over it" at the 10.5 hour mark or whatever, everyone is different. I've had mine for years and some of my friends have too and they play regular, everyday in some cases and it hasn't even begun to wear off. I have a lot of people that come over and played well after the first time. If anything, playing VR shows me the holes of regular gaming, playing on a flatscreen just seems like a huge step back, no scale, no sense of depth.

The other thing is, Kinect never had that wow factor. Not even once and I owned it by default. VR does, even by your admission and for most of us I would wager it sticks around.

Over the years, I've demoed mine to hundreds of people with constant across the board wow reactions. I'm still waiting for that one person in real life to tell me it's not impressive. Only on game forums does the opposite opinion seem commonplace..
It's very likely a troll.

Seems to me the value for Sony in the VR space is not in it's volume but in it's exclusivity. Neither Microsoft or Nintendo have shown any real interest or presence in this space leaving Sony VR exclusively which is a big deal. VR provides Sony with a similar brand effect as having the X1X be the most powerful or Switch being the only hybrid/portable. It doesn't matter how much volume or use per say (as long as it's not too low).

Sony has taken this gamble and basically replaced all the small experimental exclusives they used to put out with VR stuff instead. It's an interesting move for a platform holder which differentiates them from their competitors.

I think VR kind of helps define their platform/brand as being state of the art and visionary. I am 100% sure Sony are aware of this and will continue VR support for the branding alone.

Nope I mostly played shit like Arizona, the game where you stand on a pole on top of a skyscraper and if you type 666 in the elevator it turns into a nightmare, job simulator, Batman. Like I said all tech demos. The most fun game I played could have easily been, and was kind of previously a kinect game in Beat Sabre.

Okay, this confirms it all for me. The problem is that you didn't play good games. Arizona Sunshine is seriously meh.

Astro Bot, RE7, Wipeout, Moss, Beat Saber for PSVR. Lone Echo / Echo VR, Robo Recall, Hellblade for PC.

Examples of high quality games. Heck, Astro Bot is one of the highest rated games on PS4 and a rightful 2018 GOTY contender. Lone Echo / Echo VR feels unlike anything in gaming. It's entirely unique.

Then there are all the non-gaming uses. Google Earth VR often brings people to tears. VRChat/Rec Room show the future of social networks, and are incredibly personal for socialization that not even video chat offers. Plenty more that I left unsaid.

I did make a generalization and I shouldn’t have (on time) but it’s very obvious the “games” aren’t where they need to be yet.

I think as it stands VR lends itself best to the haunted house, nightmare situations, and not much more.

Ovboiusly you are one of the converted, so no matter what I say to you I’m wrong, but for the masses, it’s just not there yet,

I did say I played Beat Sabre (sorry I called it beat simulator in my original post)and it could have been a kinect game. There is nothing that makes it Inherintly VR.

Kinect has no controllers, so for starters that wouldn't work. But it works so well because you are in that space, immersed by the visuals and music. When I gave it as an example, it was less "This is so unique to VR" and more that it's just an extremely fun game. I also gave an example of a game that is very unique to VR in my last comment.

It doesn’t need controllers it’s smash in directions to the beat with body tracking. In fact it was a big part of some Kinect games, but hey let’s pretend it’s a new genre.

Did I even say it was a new genre? Read again. I said it's not a showcase of a game that is fundamentally unique to VR.

You're not wrong, just based on my personal experience its unique. You said VR was cool for 30min. I haven't seen that reaction yet. People are literally over the moon when I demo it unless theres a nausea issue

We can do this for days, but I’m about done here.

There is nothing about VR that makes me want to buy it at this time. Same as 3D TVs a few years ago.

Until there are more good games then bad ones it will remain a niche. I enjoy it when I can use it, but I’m not going to spend that money myself. Great that you enjoy it, and I hope it’s better then some of the gaming peripherals I spent money on, but I’m still not convinced and won’t be soon.

You are judging it without having played any good games, except one. No different than me judging a Switch by playing something like Mario Kart and that's all I pick from the good stuff.

I agree, but it’s up to them as a seller to convince me I need it.

It’s not up to you as a fan to do their job for them.

If you own psvr and enjoy it, good for you. That's all that really matters. However, saying 4 million sold is great is silly.

Sure, but just reserve judgement on the games. It's not that hard. You don't need to go around saying how bad the library is, or if you do mention it by saying "Out of the games I played...."

Kinect was shit before it released, still shit after it released. It sucked so bad even MS abandoned it 6 months into the One’s release. Gaf letting me down, no cirque du soleil gif yet. Even the Wii’s motion controller had the better game, Resident Evil 4.

I did say “from what I’ve played,” I’ve also not bashed or praised any game I haven’t played.

I praised VR on many occasions, including this thread, and also derided it.

I’m really not sure what you want from me, because I’ve been as open minded about the tech as I can, based on my history with it.

My opinion is not the be all, end all of VR, but neither is yours.

They also seem to forget that it had some big price drops going on as well. That's when I got one.

$399 without anything else -> $350 -> $300 -> discontinued?
$499 bundle with stuff -> reduced to $450 -> reduced to $350

If these people know how much it costs, are they still as impressed, though?

did it really? How many games psvr has vs vita? Vita has for sure more and its first year it was really well supported.

It's still getting first party support as opposed to the Vita which they stopped making games for in 2 years.

It's not bad for a peripheral but if Sony are really committed to VR and want this thing to really take off then they're gonna have to bundle it with PS5 at launch.

It would be a huge gamble and last time someone did this (MS with Kinect) it was a fucking disaster.

At least launch PS5 with 2 SKUs
One bundled with the new PSVR and a game and one without the PSVR and just the console. It'll be hard to get the marketing right though.

Imagine taking Daniel Ahmed seriously. That dude literally leaked PUBG's release date for the PS4 version just to get some "clout". I'd take two grains of salt and pepper before reading into his interpretations of the market.

About 2 years ago, I tweeted to him that PSVR would probably sell 5 million this generation, he laughed at me and then blocked me. Not only is he a hack, but he is also incredibly ignorant and rude.

It is when literally no other company on Planet Earth has sold as many VR headsets.

He's only good for numbers since he does get them from other people. He's a douche now that he's a mod over at era, guy needs to get off his high horse.

if theres a solid 2.0 bundled with ps5 sku at launch i'm definitely getting in on it.

these numbers have got to be exciting for sony. I do think that they are gonna have to make a significant improvement for 2.0 though

That growth is wayyy to slow. If they want it to take off and have a chance for the PS5 they are going to have to make a bundle. Maybe make it the default bundle at launch for the early adopters, than after the first few months put out a VR-less sku for the average buyers. It may convince some to jump on board.

I like VR. I have a gen1 Vive with the DAS. The problem with VR to me is that it's simply too uncomfortable and claustrophobic to play more than maybe 30 minutes in a day. I'm hopeful that Sony's next VR headset can solve that problem for me. They seem best equipped to deal with the comfort problem.

Its a 400 dollar accessory for a system that is stil 300-400 dollars. What would some of you consider "good" ?

Those were mostly bundled numbers and software sold like ass. It's not as cut and dry as ppl try to paint it.

Uh no they were not, stores were sold out of stand alone kinects. Also the software sales were high for like 2 years. Hence why a bucnh of companies jumped on board. (too late, but they jumped on board.)

Kinect was bundled with the 360

It also didn't receive a lot of support.

Attach rate argument does not determine how successful a product is.

What do you mean not a lot of support? The thing had almost 200 games, are we all rewriting history?

This was always expected. It's generation 1. The Magnavox Odyssey was a 1st generation console that couldn't even shift half a million units.

Except that Telestar was also gen 1 and sold over 1 million, and so did a couple other pong consoles. Not sure why people keep bringing up Magnavox like it won anything.

He's is constantly wrong and was called out on it before.

The reason why he's so big at Era was he got some news first from some chinese outlets before the mainstream gaming media got it, but it was public anyone could access, and artificially pumped himself as an insider and tried to attack Neogaf during the "incident" that they were wrong for banning him and a bunch of insults and etc.

Then not two days after the Incident, when the Incident in 2017 HAPPENED, right when IT HAPPENED, he was one of the first few guys that threw EviLore EviLore under the bus immediately, THE SECOND the threads were popping up and being deleted, and claimed that he had proof that Evilore was guilty, and that is what caused all those users to snap into insanity when they didn't hear anything after the first 24hrs, and then he deleted those tweets and kept spewing that shit in the side chat about how Evilore was not responding because he was arrested and tried, but then that chat of course, vanished as well.

It's the reason why Era puts him so high and why he's an Admin on the site since day 1. But he's entirely fake, he never knows what he's talking about, he'll try and pass niche news that no ones heard, but is public, as some proof he's an insider, his predictions are worse than Matt NPD, and to be honest there's something screwy going on there as well. There's a reason why almost all the devs that used to be on Gaf don't come back, some have directly called Zhuge out even recently. The only devs going to Era, which are rare, is either SJW devs, or Devs trying to control PR and spreading of misinformation.

It was at the very start of the generation, comparable to PSVR. We have gen 1 headsets still releasing like Oculus Quest/Go/Vive Focus/Rift S. Those are more comparable to the Telestar which was late into the generation.

So he actually made up his 'prediction' then? Did he think it was going to sell less or more initially? I'm curious.

Exactly! Not sure what people expect. It's as if some people here bet money that PSVR would fail.

That's why PSVR2 will come and is also a big reason retro is a must for PS5.

I think I'll bite one next gen.

I still don't have a unit.

Hoping that PS5 will offer a VR set in its launch window. Especially if PS5 is backwards comaptible so that I can play Tetris Effect and my copy of Wipeout.

So were the consoles I talked about, PSVR wasn't even first.
The Telestar came out 3 years into the generation. The Atari Pong console came out 4 years in. In today's terms, that would be as if these released in 2018 and 2019, which is exactly where the headsets I mentioned are releasing.
