A volunteer cop from Queens has gone from living in a homeless shelter to studying at Harvard University, and she hopes to be an inspiration for others struggling to improve their lives.

Athena Capo-Battaglia, 18, said she knew that getting a higher education would put her on a path that would change her world.
“I felt I had to get into college because this is not where I want to stay,” said the auxiliary NYPD officer who applied to colleges while living in a shelter. “I was like, ‘OK, this is one way that I can get out and maybe in the future get a good job.’”

Student loans. She picked the right field to go into though. Arduous, but she should be able to recoup the costs after a little while.

The grants and scholarships won't cover it.

Hope she's doing STEM or she'll be going right back to homeless.

No gender or ethnic studies for this girl - she's going into neuroscience, something that will help keep her from living in mom's basement ........ if mom had a basement.

It's encouraging to see a young person in very difficult situation rise above it and achieve instead of wallowing in self-pity. I wish the best for her and hope she ends up doing great things.

To be fair, you can in fact do well with degrees that aren't in STEM or business. The trick is either choosing a program that isn't too niche or parlaying the skills you did learn into another field.

It’s also important to not be a total dribbling useless twat, which remains the biggest barrier to employment for many college grads, STEM or not

Exactly! Something lots of people don't understand about going to college.

It's absolutely disgusting that good people can become homeless because they get sick. There has to be some middle ground between almost zero help like in the US and giving generous handouts to criminal scum like in Western Europe.
