Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

He explains the ideal situation which is how all corporations communicate to consumers anytime where introduced to new tech. Im not disagreeing with him. Im saying we aint getting nowhere near making up for a 8x defecit.

Unless you wanna pull out a PS5 devkit and measure RAM utilization and SSD throughput, we have no way of quantifying this ourselves. Not to mention we're still early in a gen where many games have been pushed back due to pandemic delays. It's always the rule that games later in the gen will make better use of the hardware than early gen games.

Could you imagine if even those demo teases wherent even released? This gen sucks.
I cannot even imagine how we'd all be like if these demos were never released. Honestly, it's thanks to these demos why I have so much faith and optimism as well as excitement going into this gen and looking forward to the future of videogames in general and more than ever too.

the Matrix demo also shows the limitations tho.

this demo ran like pure garbage, and had to use an extremely low resolution to run reasonably well.

in motion in the open world it looks like straight garbage due to the ridiculously bad temporal stability of the image.

constant reconstruction artifacts,
raytracing effects fizzle like crazy due to the low ray count and the denoising having to do miracles to get a cohesive image onto the screen,
camera motion blur from hell to hide the stuttery framerate which means you literally can't see shit as soon as you turn the camera,
and last but not least even with Nanite you absolutely saw pop-in still because you can only have so many draw calls, and distant geometry still needs to be culled in order to not kill the CPU.

impressive tech, less than impressive visuals... I would never want an actually finished game to look like that.

I wonder how this demo would run now on UE5.1, as this brought several improvements to native, lumen and other features.
Maybe now we could have a more stable frame rate and better image quality.

You mean to tell me none of y'all goofballs in this thread noticed this while playing? Yo this is the most impressive thing I've seen on next gen consoles, and I'm not even kidding.

Early in the gen? It's year 3 of this generation already.

I know we have seen these videos a million times but I cannot not smile and giggle like a little kid every time I see one of these and for sure I cannot not post them over here:messenger_beaming:. Truly impressive stuff. If there is a game that looked like that I wouldn't leave the house:

Now that's sad.

I can’t agree on the TLOU II part…it looks worse IMO…way worse.

that video doesnt do Demon Souls justice. For whatever reason, a lot of detail is being left out.

DS shines in tesselation, materials, and lighting. All are a step above TLOU2 which looks stunning most of the time, but is exposed in some daylight environments like santa barbara and the rooftop sections.

I recently went back to both TLOU and DS to settle an argument with Gymwolf on DS character models vs TLOU2 character models and took some pics.

It's year 2 and 3 months. And the pandemic effectively pushed everything back a year or so. For example, Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7 and God of War Ragnarok were originally supposed to be 2021 releases but due to pandemic delays they got pushed to 2022. Similar occurrences have happened all across the industry.

So yes, early in the gen. Sony only finished releasing their first wave of first party titles they advertised all the way back in 2020 a couple months ago with the release of God of War.

The pandemic can only blamed so much when remote work is available to devs. Not to mention, those games being crossgen was decided long before the pandemic even started.

meh. Realtime means nothing here because the character doesnt look like that in the game's realtime cutscenes.

Lighting is the weak link right now. You can have last gen models looking like offline CGI if you have a sufficiently advanced lighting engine.

This even an argument? Demon Souls is a beast. It dunks on any PS4 game handily. Only Forbidden West on PS5 can give it a run for its money but even then. Bluepoint knocked it out of the park with the graphics.

I dont disagree. Thats why i called it a PS4.5 game when we started this discussion. I think we can do a lot better. Matrix is the gold standard right now. Anyone who doesnt get there is just lazy or incompetent or targeting 60 fps.
The last one is hurting us. And the genie is out of the bottle so now any game announces 30FPS only nerds will bitch and whine about it in the usual hyperbolic fashion.

Demon Souls is a little inconsistent I'll admit, some parts just look more pleasing than others, but nothing has impressed me as much as the flame lurker boss area. That shit looked like a CGI target render. All those particles too. I kinda had the "Killzone Shadow Fall moment" for that part.

Also where you fight the fat guy with the bird on his head. Something about that arena and the destructibility also blew me away.

I think Demon's Souls looks really good. A much needed launch title.
But even at its smaller scale it still does some stuff a lot worse than Horizon 2

Guerilla and Decima are a killer combo
What am I supposed to be seeing thats gonna be altering my opinion?

Graphical improvements like we saw from PS1/N64 to PS2/Xbox to 360/PS3 are just not going to happen. PC used to be night and day different than consoles, and now it's the same as a Pro to PS5. The biggest improvements seem to be in frames per second.

Wtf!? No! You can tell the environmental lighting is a gen apart in the first 30 seconds in the game going through Boletarian castle.

Lumen PS5 demo, Matrix demo, Lions Unity demo, Rift Apart, TLOU Pt 1 real-time cinematics all display that I am more than happy with for early gen.

Lol at the rain effects in RE4.

Yeah, I agree it's pretty bad for current gen standards, maybe not even suitable for last gen. But if you're into cutting edge rain tech as you appear to be, why the consistent bashing and downplaying of TLOU Pt. 1 from you, which displays the one of, if not the most impressive rain simulation we've ever seen in a game? I'd kill for a bit of consistency from you, Slimy.

Forbidden West looks way better…

Respectfully disagree. I could hear an argument it looks better. But way better? As in blows demon souls away? Yeah I just disagree.
I just played HFW, DS and TLOU2 back to back to back just to confirm that my nostalgia wasnt clouding my judgement and nope, Horizon still looks the best. DS second but close behind TLOU2 just way behind.

The problem with TLOU2 is that outdoors is fine. Any time you are indoors, the baked lighting fails. Some indoor areas that got a lot of love from artists are fine but its a 30 hour game and its clear their baked lighting model didnt work in all instances. DS just looks fabulous in almost every lighting condition because their lighting model is far more dynamic.

Horizon also suffers from poorly lit interiors but since most of the game is set outdoors where it looks jaw dropping, it's hard to dock too many points for its shortcomings. A LOT of TLOU takes place indoors and it just doesnt work. Putting outdoor TLOU2 with outdoor Horizon and Demon Souls, the gap is smaller but there is still a gap with the textures and character models simply looking better.

DS doesnt do itself any favors with those awful white halo effects around the character model when you are in the undead state. it makes the game look ugly. if you are good at the game and somehow manage to stay in human mode, you will get to appreciate the textures, tesselation and lighting a lot more.

This trailer shows the Flamelurker run and you can see it looks way better than the other walkthrough posted.

Agree some of Slimy's takes lately have me scratchin. Downplaying Ratchet a lot lately too. Lou1 remake looks damn good, even if ND shoulda done better. It looks cleaner than part 2 especially outdoors. Shadows are better. Draw in is virtually non existent. It's top 5 graphics this gen with Ratchet, demons, Horizon, and miles morales. One could maybe argue a few others belong in that list too like ragnarok, callisto, forza Horizon etc.

I just played it. load up the suburbs encounter. you will start off in a store. awful graphics. the moment you step out in the streets, it starts to look great again.

i actually took several screenshots of the game looking extremely uneven years ago and posted them in this very thread lol

Look straight up unfinished. And then you have other indoor scenes with absolutely CG quality lighting and atmospherics.

FDJaJv7XEAQdSkt

So basically, the good lighting in those scenes hide the more or less average looking texture work and object detail. Where as DS which still doesnt look as good as the Matrix or even HFW, has far better material quality and far more consistent lighting.

Hell, I think even RE8 has way better interiors than TLOU2 thanks to its material work and lighting but fails to top it in outdoor sections.

Speaking of the difference more advanced lighting can achieve, check this comparison between the RE engine tech demos and RE7. Looks a generation apart even though they use the same assets:

Maybe on PS6.

No idea why everyone is analyzing this with a microscope when it's a mere fan concept made probably by one person. I didn't say it is perfect but c'mon that looks hella good.

I personally like Slimy's high standards, the dude doesn't budge and holds the devs accountable even for the slightest of graphical mishaps and I like that.

Damn... Auto exposure gets worse and worse in videogames... Looks like someone hits the windows with an array of powerful headlights. Or maybe a nuclear bomb explosion froze outside.
Its really hard problem to solve apparently. I remember some tweets from watch dogs legion programmer on this topic, but i dont think i can find them right now.

This adds Respawn to the list of AAA top tier studios who have phoned in the visuals this gen despite being afforded a free leash with a next gen only release.

Other studios:
Turn10 - Forza 8
ND - TLOU Remake
EA Motive - Dead Space Remake
Arkane - Deadloop and Redfall
Luminous Studios - Forspoken

Has all the talent left the industry to go work at VFX studios for hollywood? I cant blame this on Publishers. They are giving these devs next gen only releases, 4-7 years to make these games, and clearly the budget is still there. So just WTF is going on?

agreed. TLOU P1 could have been better but I think they have been more invested in whatever the next project is
also with rumours about their next-gen engine and capabilities akin to UE5's lumen and nanite,
I think they definitely have a lot more up their sleeves that they don't wish to reveal just yet,
so that they can pleasantly surprise players by how advanced their next title can look.
TLOU P1 would neither warrant such a dramatic makeover nor be a great place to showcase the next iteration of their in-house engine

I hope you're wrong because it scares me to even think that the 60fps crowd has managed to convince devs that less is better:messenger_confused:

I agree I'm just talking about his down playing of Ratchet and even LoU part 1 to a lesser degree. Seems he's all about Horizon FW and not giving those games rhe props they deserve.

Slimy- hope you don't think I'm taking cheap shots at you man. Just defending my boys, Ratchet and Demon's. You know I'm disappointed with ND for Lou p1, but on its own merits it's a beautiful game compared to the lackluster stuff we've gotten this gen.

I will say, believable physics and effects completely sell graphics.

Those TLOU puddles are an incredible example. The texture quality almost doesn't matter at all.
Give me a Virtua Fighter 1 character walking through that scene and I'd be cool with it.

The FluidNinja UE4 plugin is incredible at this.
I have no idea how taxing it is to implement in a real game.

Looks like something a PS4 could do 😐
They havnt improved animations AT ALL. I'm seeing minor improvements to the graphics otherwise, but no better than any cross gen sequel we've had this gen. Their in lies the disappointment

So this is another next gen only game that is so underwhelming graphically. Yes it'll still be pretty but it should've improved by leaps, as with every other gen prior to this.

At what point will the games media start actually talking about this? Until there is pressure on these companies this will not change.
