NPD Sales Results for March 2013 [Up5: BioShock Infinite]

I'm generally highly skeptical of such things, but this is a completely believable list. If someone was going to fake a list, wouldn't they include at least one "omfg megaton" unannounced game?
The actual list isn't particularly unbelievable, my credulity ends at the idea that:
The Legend of Zelda
Bayonetta 2
Yarn Yoshi
X
Super Smash Bros U
SMTxFE
Mario Kart U

Are all releasing in "Fall."

God of War did well all things considered but SSM's magic multiplayer wand clearly failed to push sales, instead of Ascension Sony should have put out God of War 4 without the MP last fall as the AAA PS3 exclusive (it needed it) instead of depending on PS All Stars (lol) as the flagship first party title. The series would have stayed on a growth curve and I would have been able to play through the story after the trilogy.

I cant see it. If so then yes the alarm bells are ringing ever so loudly at Nintendo HQ.

Multiplayer is there to lower the number of trade-ins. It should push sales of new copies post-release month.

In any case I can't see how multiplayer would hurt the game like you're implying. Worst case scenario it makes no difference at all.

X and SMTxFE will probably be out this year but not in NA (unless Reggie is so worried that he has Treehouse in overdrive). I'd put SSBU at <= 25%. Everything else will probably be out.

Have we found out the numbers for it, or are you just commenting on the chart position?

in this event the only unbelievable ones would be smt and smash bros.

-zelda is the wind waker. we've known that for a while
-bayonetta 2 has been in development for about 3 years
-yarn yoshi's being made by good-feel, and their last game came out 3 years ago
-xenoblade came out 3 years ago. this team, like retro and ead tokyo, would have had as much time to make this game as those other guys (although it begs the question- where are their games?)
-mario kart u would be a rush job, but i think nintendo needs it out this year more than anything else

atlus is making smtxfe with some assistance, i assume. i thought they were rather full up with 3ds games and persona 5 at the moment though

smash bros. would be crazy-rushed for this fall, but i can see it making the fiscal year, barely.

If these are fairly accurate, that's not a terrible showing for Monster Hunter is it?

Yeah, provided that those numbers are true Lego city sold even better, so both games have fared decently overall, although I'm expecting somerhing more from MH3U on Wii U in next month, since it's the only version with native online multiplayer.

The 3DS version of MH3U is not selling badly either apparently; besides, looking at Luigi's mansion 2, Fire emblem and Pokemon, faring fairly well, it seems 3DS software has had very positive monthly sales.

As for hardware, I'm looking forward to numbers, that may be hopefully slightly better than many are expecting.

Someone needs to update the OP/title. We have so many more numbers (Wii U, MH3:U, NFS, etc, etc, etc) thanks to cream sugar and John.

If checkers is comical instead pretend I wrote Sorry, Pictionary, Othello, Scrabble, or some other game. You don't think showing a family playing a board game as a 3 second section of a 30 second TV spot wouldn't help get the versatility of the Gamepad across? in that post I forgot to mention karaoke. It highlights yet another neat way the Gamepad can be used.

This is so sad I can't bring myself to mock it :(

Am I the only one who thinks SSBU may actually launch this year? NOA needs it on store shelves in a bad way.

It would be an incredible rush job, but maybe they'll convince Sakurai that they can fix it through DLC and patches?

MH did nicely actually. It was released at the end of the month, and it did almost on par with the third one on Wii. And it's its expansion. It will sell over time also.

My incredulity with this was with the idea of Zelda being the new one i.e. subtitle tbd.

I expect about half to 2/3 of that list for the end of the year, unless Nintendo rushes these games out half-assed. EDIT: actually even if Nintendo rushes these out half-assed.

Numbers only go in the OP if they are from PR or PR-derived math.

Wow congrats to Bioshock, definitely deserved it! Also glad to see Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon perform well. I should have expected it to happen given that they are big IPs, but I'm actually surprised that God of War and Gears of War charted so high given the lack of buzz and hype that each game had.

WiiU numbers are bad, but not that bad. I mean, I remember people expecting something around the 40.000 units because Patcher said 57.000 and his predictions where high the months before.
With all that being said, I think that this Christmas will be the decisive date for the console.

I think the Wii and Wii U dying/failing has helped the 3DS a lot. All the Nintendo fans have only one platform to do their gaming. It seems like it will continue to be this way for a while.

On the 24th I'm expecting Iwata to allude towards Nintendo taking drastic measures when it comes to WiiU.

Rebranding/relaunch-type measures.

I really would like to believe this. Also, I love Iwata. He's the man, and I think that there's no mistaking how much he loves video games, but maybe it really is time for some new leadership at Nintendo...

So can assume that the reason why Xbox and PS3 were so close was the GoW:A bundle? Because from the leaks the bundle seems to have done fairly well and it is highly unusual for PS3 to be so close to Xbox360 in the US.

The X360 sold approx 24% more than the PS3 this month.

That is neither highly unusual nor outside of the norm for the US.

March 2012, PS3 was 337K, 360 was 371K i.e. a delta of 34K. The delta this month is around 41K. The holiday months are where there's some major disparity.

Owning a Wii U feels somewhat esoteric!

Oh right, thanks for that!

Edit: Also did we get a Sony PR response or are we still waiting for one?

I want Monster Hunter WiiU numbers. Hit me, even if it hurts.

And is it time to pull out the PS3vsGBA .gifs in reference to WiiU hardware doing so badly?

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

Looks like I was right to assume Pachter forgot this was a 5-week month when I went for 60-70k rather than 55k again.

Looks like I was right to assume Pachter forgot this was a 5-week month when I went for 60-70k rather than 55k again.

It's also important to note that:

January 2002, where Gamecube sold 61,000, was a 4-week month.

January 2013, where Wii U sold 57,000, was a 5-week month.

So the Wii U had an extra week to sell, but it still couldn't manage GameCube's level.

I want Monster Hunter WiiU numbers. Hit me, even if it hurts.

We have a range:

Best case scenario for MH is 129K and worse is 101K according to what you posted, so:

60.9K < MHU 3DS < 77.4K
40.4K < MHU WiiU < 51.6K

Also if JohnHacker's NFWMW Vita number is legit then that's a very good number. NFS:MW Vita > 100K is something that I would not have expected.

John, if you could be so kinda and leak Bioshock, Mass Effect 2, and Oblivion PS3 First Month and LTD numbers or range, I would appreciate it. I think those are good for comparison with NFS:MW Wii U due to being late $60 ports.

Bioshock sales seem pretty disappointing for a AAA game that was in development for over 5 years.

I would say it's disappointing for what is one of the best games of the generation.

But in 10 days it sold almost 900 thousand copies in the U.S alone. I think that's pretty good, the franchise keeps growing. Also I doubt the game had a 200/300 man team for 5 years.

I'm not making any assumptions, you're just projecting. Nor am I pulling random data points outta me ass.

You clearly made an assumption when you said the reason why NFS didn't even sell 10k was because it was a 5 month full price port that the Wii U userbase had already bought on Ps3/360. I don't know what your personal definition of assumption is but goddamn that is a full blown assumption.

Those MH3G 3D numbers are fucking terrible when put next to the Wii U MH numbers considering the huge disparity in userbase. Hopefully the lesson learned will be put online on the portable versions of MH from now on. Doubt it though. This might be the last time we're seeing MH in the west if Nintendo won't be publishing it.

I wonder how SS will do given these numbers.
