Xbox One Launch Thread [Thread being archived 1/1/14]

I'm getting notifications. Odd.

My xbox has been weird since I opened it. Last night I bit into a piece of raw broccoli, it was the only sound in the room, and kinect opening the settings.

Okay, now that's pretty damn funny, lol. I can just imagine the look on your face, probably stopped mid chew and had a puzzled like mouth half open smirk going on huh?

I got an Xbox One for Christmas.

I have never in my life experienced a more under baked, half finished product. Holy cow, you guys. it BARELY works. It crashes all the time. I'm no PS4 fanboy, I have both, but it's super depressing. It'll probably be great in 6 months. But I only turn this thing on for fitness anymore (if it even turns on. Kinect is reaaaaaaally hit or miss.)

You have a bad unit because mine is almost working at near perfect levels. No dashboard crashes, no Kinect issues, nada. Now, saying this, I most likely just jinxed myself.

I really like this thread and it was great being a part of it. Cool to see that we'll have an Xbox games thread to fall back on as there's been a lot of great info on the console in here.

Brought Crimson Dragon to complete my 3 for 3 Deal. Game is pretty cool from the 15 minutes of what I played.

Now I have Ryse, Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct, Max TCOB and Crimson Dragon. Think I'm good for a while lol. Thread was great while it last.

It was hysterical. I was like WTF? Looked to see if I had put the controller somewhere that it rested on a button - nope. I'm looking around the room to see if my wife had snuck in (she had already gone to sleep) and said something while I chewed and I didn't hear it. Nope. And then I started laughing.

I was having trouble with the kinect the entire time... the hand gestures were nearly impossible, the broccoli thing, voice not being recognized a lot. It's actually a relief that it was just a bum unit. When it did work it was actually really cool. I've been one of those "I dont want to talk to my system" people but early on (before the broccoli incident) I could not, for the life of me, find the system settings with the controller so I said "xbox go to settings" and I was there and even though I felt like a dope (and my wife literally LOL'd at me) it went right to it and i was like "ok, I can get used to this."

And now that i'm waiting for a new one I feel like pushing the power button is so last gen! haha

The hand gestures don't work well for me either... at all. Also could not get head tracking in forza to work (though I didn't try very hard), and I've never gotten a heartbeat to register in Fitness (though I do have one). Voice recognition and body recognition in fitness are really good though.

I thought I would be against voice control and figured it would be a novelty that would wear off after a week or so. I was wrong. It's my favorite part of the system. I'm notorious for losing my TV remote so to be able to control everything without it is great. Also being able to jump throughout the entire UI instantly is awesome.

Maybe thats what I'm doing wrong with it. I'll try that.

In terms of the crashing, I had to a "we dont know what happened" error a few times, and last night i turned it off,and it hung on a black screen (still getting a video signal) until i actually unplugged it from the wall. Crazy stuff.

something is wrong with yours, I've never seen the error screen or black screen

edit:
am I the only dummy who just figured out you have to raise your hand to activate motion control on the OS? I was doing the hand waving like kinect 1.0 and it never worked.

It took me a week to figure that out. I'm not a fan of the gesture controls at all, though. It's annoying when the hand shows up when you go take a sip of your drink.

I'm not either, I prefer the joystick and voice, but its good to know my kinect isn't defective.

If I was still in high school I would be rocking one of these patches.

It's slightly less lame than the Naruto headband, right? :^)

Nope. I think it's just a random release date.

Yeah I'm pretty sure Warframe is February because of the 3-month PS4 exclusivity.

Only reason I found out was because Kinect Sports Rivals made me do a tutorial before playing, otherwise I would have never known.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
I got an Xbox One for Christmas.

I've had it crash to the main page once on me since launch day. There is something wrong with your Xbox. Exchange it.

Instead of going with a self deprecating title maybe go over the top the other way:

Rrrright.

That sucks that it sounds like you have a messed up console. Barely works? Far from that. Why would you wait 6 more months on something that sounds so terrible?

I put some thoughts together on both systems side by side. Don't read if you only want to hear good things (about either system...).

Click it if you're so inclined.

Good writeup, though it's too bad you haven't experienced the XB1 in a traditional living room setting. Because it's always on I end up playing XB1 games a LOT. It's like a constant reminder that I need to play something. I like having access to my friends list and getting invites even while watching live TV. Skype is awesome too, because if I don't hear my phone ring my wife can just get me on my Kinect/Headset, hehe. I may actually get a bunch of multiplats on XB1 because of all of the integrated features and I'm even regretting getting AC4 on PS4 at this point. PS4 is a great console and I'll play it a ton, no doubt, but I really wish it had some of the features exclusive to XB1.

BTW, Sony didn't just kill the Dreamcast. They killed SEGA as we knew them. I have forgiven Sony... but I will never forget... unless Shenmue 3 happens.

I wish you could follow it up with "louder" like the way you can say "faster" when fast-forwarding.

"Xbox Volume up"
"Xbox Volume up"
"Xbox Volume up"

is not cool

I do love "xbox mute" and "xbox unmute" though

On my TV it would barely raise or lower it, but my sound bar is perfect. But they do need to add the option "More!"

It would be cool to assign a motion-gesture to a certain action. Like a quick wave of my hand would mute everything so I didn't have to say "Xbox Mute" louder than my current volume.

This all day, haha. Living with three other roommates makes it even more comical.

Me: "Xbox Volume Up"
Me: "Xbox....Volume Up!"
Me: "Xbox!"

Roommate: "SHUT UP!"

I'm actually expecting gestures to be added or introduced later this year for what you said. Kinda like hot commands where doing a specific gesture results in a specific thing happening.

I think Bing search needs to be added to every app to make it easy to find videos in whatever app you use. I know they have the overall Bing search which will actually cull videos from all your app services installed but when inside an app, it sucks to use that stupid letter bar.

On my receiver Xbox volume down/up is 3 "numbers" on the receiver. I usually keep it at 32 unless I'm playing BF4. BF4 at 32 will blow the roof off the house.

Looks like I am going to get an X1 this weekend...

Even though I probably don't need it, the gamer in me wants to own all the consoles
