mods, can we lock this thread before it spirals out of control for the OP?

While it was funny at first, digging into peoples history (however retarded that person was when creating those threads) is only going to cause more harm than good.

Also, OP, stop fucking replying to this thread, and giving yet more ammo to the forum?

Maybe a college degree will help; however, I suggest starting small and shooting for a high-school diploma first.

How exactly do you get a home-school diploma? Do you have to take a formalized GED test to make sure "home school" wasn't just a ploy for you parents to teach you that dinosaurs are a liberal conspiracy against god, or something.

:lol so now any employer can find out you came blood but didn't want to go to the doctor because your conservative parents told you jacking off was immoral, and punishable by taking your computer away (which doesn't exactly help with "reliability").

edit: holy shit, you take viagra? now every editor's going to stick you right next to their office.

Is this dude a joke account?

Do you have a car? Travel to DC and get a fake, and then hit up the 930 Club or Black Cat and dance your sadness away. Alternatively, head over to Shirlington and eat yourself into a stupor.

These solutions worked for me. ;)

There's a lot of posts on here already, but have you considered jumping into actual journalism? Apply for an internship or web writer for a local TV station or newspaper?

JSnake, in an effort to save face, how about linking us to a few sample articles so we can see if you're a good writer?

I can't believe that their actually exists places that pay 16 year olds to write game articles. I thought this was a myth like elves and leprechauns.

I'm not sure the kid who walks around with a "mild boner" all day wants to link his GAF name with his real name. :p

You get uppity about teenagers writing articles, but you don't even know how to use "there"? Oh, the ironing.

wtf, you're 16. If you love writing then write, write, write. Do anything and everything. Don't complain about a certain job, since you don't need the money and there are probably much more experienced game "journalists" out there looking for work.

thanks for the laugh
if i was the op, i'd be more worried about some cruel lurker linking my easily contactable family members to some of the more unsavory elements of my post history.

hell, it wouldn't even take a malicious informant for someone working at games for change to notice the jump in traffic coming in from the link you presented, and follow the referral to the op and be like "hey *******, is this your kid right here?".

just a heads up.

That doesn't say much about your site or your hiring judgement, does it?

Anyway, JSnake you're only 16. Stop fretting about earning chump change writing about videogames and focus on your education and building a resume. You have amazing connections through your parents, please don't waste them on videogames. With all the doom and gloom about the health of vgjournalism in the past couple years, you would think these kids would wise up and think about a more viable career.

Well, the website did go down because of shitty writers and there was extra money that we were willing to pay writers for a month.

Anyways, JSnake should just do whatever he wants. He obviously loves writing and he should pursue it if that's what he likes. If he enjoys what he's doing that's awesome, but I don't think the "You do/enjoy this? You're wrong and here's what I do/would do" mentality that's common on this site is helping him.

Eh, screw the haters in here. Your post probably wasn't the wisest, but people likely won't remember it if you do good work.

I started writing when I was 13/14 (and home-schooled), went to my first E3 at 16, and then started doing all sorts of crazy stuff. As everyone says here, write, write, write. Even if its for free, the more you write, the more opportunities you get. The write opportunities start turning into junket trips, where you meet a ton of people and your opportunities expand.

Along this line, pay to get yourself to E3 at a minimum (share hotel with other people, eat ramen, but get yourself there --- even if this means you need a fast-food job to have some money to spend). Almost as important as meeting other editors, is meeting publicists and getting on distribution lists. You may not get code right away, but if they see e-mails from you and begin to remember you, things will start to turn.

Also - look outside of games writing, its not a rapidly expanding area. If you only want to write about games, go for it, but my other passions (film and home theater/gadgets) got me some gigs that paid 10x more than what I had ever made for a game writing piece.

Again though, write every day.

I have to agree with some of the above, this thread is in serious need of a pity lock. And for the love of god, stop posting so much personal info.

So you wouldn't be upset if this kid was assigned a review of Resistance 2, came to GAF and wrote the following?

"Dear GAF, I am writing my PS3 reviews and have not played Resistance 2. Tell me why it sucks so I'm not just telling my readers it sucks, but why it sucks."

Sometimes people people have a reason to "hate," Jstevenson.

Do what you love doing, just don't sacrifice your eduction or social skills yet. By the very virtue of your youth you can do something else if it doesn't work out.

Beyond the bullshit, beyond the slams and poor personal judgement, there's an underlying theme to the quality posts here:

1. You have to start at the bottom. That means working for free. There's really only one time in your life that you can do that, and that's now. If you can actually score some coin, good for you.

2. It's all about who you know, right? That means you have to be networking at all times, and that includes here. If you're serious, I would bomb your neogaf account today and start fresh.

3. Practice, practice, practice.

He's 16. He will make mistakes. The best part is that you are so young you have plenty of time to make up for them. I know I had my dumb moments. I just kept pressing forward and building a portfolio and resume.

For someone wanting a job in the industry of the written word, you seem to be unable to grasp pragmatics of things both you and others write.

Yeah I just got the joke. Didn't realize he worked for 1up. I thought he had read the whole thread and felt sorry for me due to some of the replies I've received.

My apologies, Skip.

So, as a 16 year old, maybe he shouldn't be reviewing games.

People with integrity just got laid off from 1up.com, yet this kid with connections is lamenting being "between jobs." Doesn't seem right.

Maybe after he's done with college he'll be mature enough where you won't have to make excuses for him based on his age.

Oh my. Your 16 and complaining about no work?? Really?? REALLY???

Just wait until you actually have responsibilities...and your entire family and lively-hood depends on your job.

Until this happens, please stop whining.
