God, looking back at old threads to see PS3 hatred was just amazing. Most hated popular console of all time for years...

There also wasn't any of this "competition is good" nonsense. 360 got a 10 million lead in the U.S. early on and I don't remember people hoping the consoles were close in sales holding hands skipping through the park because it's good for the industry.

GBA battles brought many laughs while looking through the archives.

Yeah, those were good times (well, not so much for me, as I was a PS3 early adopter). And once the PS3 started consistently beating the GBA, it became against the PS2. I think the Energizer bunny got posted in every thread for a long time.

Lol, Good point.

Back in those days the main event was Wii/DS salt and gloating.

Amirox' old rant about the PS3.

I guess it's now gotten less popular after it seemed to be in every thread.

This gen is up YoY and combined with last gen they are slightly down.

"Maybe next decade."

He's a prophet!

Well I mean the console market as a whole.

Especially when you consider that the Xbox 360 and PS3 were selling those numbers alongside the Wii (which sold tons). Whilst this gen there is no Wii, just the PS4 and One.

Yea the Wii audience is largely lost this gen. I don't think many would debate that. But I think the core audience that picked up 360/PS3 last gen is still around. PS4 seems like its going to dominate that audience WW this gen. Again I truly beleive that they are slowly losing traction with the current price point and this could cost them in budget minded markets.

It was truly awful though. I was a child/fanboy back then supporting it for a while, but it had everything against it. I guess Europe, some big titles and hefty subsidizing helped it.

Edit: One of the amazing things with the PS4 reveal was Mark almost apologizing for the PS3.

Yeah, that always struck me as crazy, like a learned Pavlovian responce.

But the question then becomes how big is that core market.

A lot of casuals bought the 360 and PS3. Even the PS2 wouldn't have done the numbers it did without support from casuals. (Remember E3 2004)

Anyway, i'm not saying console gaming is dead or that casuals are gone. Just the market isn't as large as it has been. Price drops will cause spikes in sales and get more people buying but sales won't be much higher, especially when compared to the PS2/Wii/360 peak years.

You could be right. You probably are. But this is GAF man! I want to believe! ;-)

You're usually right. So you're probably right. T_T

I mean look, I could be wrong.

But that's how I see it right now. As I said above, there is still plenty of demand for consoles but unless we really see morpheus take off or some sort of life extension product take off then I just don't see this generation of consoles having consistently high sales over the years.

From the new predictions thread, but I don't want to derail it with discussion;
I thought this might be of interest, since it demonstrates the power of a hardware promotion.
Tony Bartel said:
We remain focused on being the premier videogame destination, and we drove 360 basis points of total videogame market share growth during the quarter. We increased our Xbox One and PS4 software share by 420 basis points to 54%, and our new gen hardware share by 260 basis points to 38.5%.

On a combined basis, GameStop sold 46% of all Xbox One and PS4 hardware and software combined during the quarter, up 610 basis points from last year. We continue to gain share in a new cycle that is significantly outpacing previous launches.

The month of April was even more impressive than the quarter, as we captured 47.6% of all software sold. We sold 57% of all Xbox One and PS4 software during the month and nearly half of all the new gen hardware and software combined.

A promotion that we recently ran shows the power of our unique value proposition. During the month of April, we partnered with Microsoft to run a promotion where customers could buy a new Xbox One console for $275 with the trade in of either a PS3 or an Xbox 360 console. We nearly doubled our Xbox One market share during the month, but more importantly, GameStop drove two-thirds of the 63% industry growth that Xbox One experienced during the month. We are providing unprecedented value that is fueling this cycle’s growth.
My emphasis. The whole transcript is interesting. Go read it over at Seeking Alpha.

While impressive, this is also indicative of a product that is moving from a position of mass consumer appeal, to being a specialist niche.
Gamestop accounted for nearly 50% of all hardware and software sold?

It's like when comics stopped being things kids bought at news stands, and became things "collectors" bought in specialist stores.
