NPD Sales Results for December 2014 [Up2: Nintendo Sales Notes]

tapedeck

Do I win a prize for talking about my penis on the Internet???
I'm thinking PS4 easily wins January NPD mainly due to MS raising the xbone price back up to 400 for two weeks...still don't get why they did that. With Bloodborne and (to a lesser extent) the Order Sony should win Feb/March as well. After that I think it'll be a very tight race back and forth till the end of the year.

I'm pretty sure they had it go back up to $399 for two weeks so that the limited time only $349 price didn't feel like a sham.

What I picked up:

Terry Travis, can you remove those, please? As Aquamarine said, we're trying to avoid summary posts. Obviously the data's all out there to be gotten, if someone were to try hard enough to gather it, but we're trying to not invite more widespread dissemination by summarizing it in easily copyable chunks. You can PM him those values, if you want him to know specifically. Sort of a gentleman's agreement amongst us and those helping to provide some data. :)

Thanks!

So perhaps we should post on this thread more often to bury the post in question?

Btw has 3D World finally passed a million unbundled? Or at least bundled?

Is amazon typically an accurate indicator for npd/US sales?

Amazon is pretty much 1:1 with every NPD result there ever has been this gen.

I also find it interesting that despite the X1 going back to $349, that bundle seems to have run out of steam. The PS4 is still tracking 8 places above it on every hourly sales chart.

So now I wonder was the holiday boost from all the kids who wanted it but might have had to wait until next Christmas, but because the price dropped to ridiculous levels, all the parents snaffled it up?

Oh that's right, keep forgetting that the first 2 weeks xbox one was 399 lol.

Sad we won't see how those weeks are, but I kinda feel like the last two weeks of January won't be huge. For whatever reason I still think Xbox has a bigger holiday boost kinda like Nintendo.

PS4 will probably win, but I think the X1 will be a bit disappointing on top of that.

Amazon has had the correct ranking between the Xbox One and the PS4 for every month since the systems came out, true. But I wouldn't go so far as to say it's been one to one, because:

a.) I don't think anyone ever uses it to look at the sales ranking of the other systems, and

b.) I can't remember the XB1 and PS4 finishing more less the three spots from each other since people started paying attention to the rankings. They've always been not that close, and I have a feeling that there's going to a month soon where they're close, and it turns out Amazon is wrong.

I meant 1:1 figuratively, as in PS4 Amazon for the month: PS4 winning NPD.

Yeah they'll be close but they're not supposed to be. At that price the X1 should be selling hugely again but somehow despite the price, PS4 is still ahead.

I don't totally understand this. Are you questioning his numbers or are you just saying "we would rather people do their own work to find out how many consoles have been sold because NPD group doesn't like it".

They won't like it if this becomes the thread for easy access to the numbers and we might end up with no numbers.

The latter.

You should bear in mind that this data is information that NPD charge for, and hold copyright over, and don't take too kindly to it being given out for free.

Not allowing readily available data to be summarized seems....problematic at best, absurd at worst. I'm not sure if I am a fan of the "we'll take what we can get we just have to make sure we don't piss them off or we'll get nothing" ethos. One man's opinion.

First of all, this isn't "readily available data." This is protected data that costs money to get. We are lucky that it gets leaked to us.

No offense, but this was the same attitude that nearly left us with no data a few months ago. The data was originally hidden behind quotes, and people complained about it. Now they are trying not to have all the data posted in one big post, cause then people over on Chartz and other sites just copy and paste it, then share it, and link it right back to GAF.

The people that are sharing it are doing so at a risk, just follow these threads from the beginning and you will get all the information. Just write it down on a piece of notebook paper if you are trying to keep it all together. But if the people that are sharing this data, dont want it all summarized (as Aqua I know specifically has nicely requested) the least you could do is respect that.

you have no idea what goes on behind closed doors / with the npd group

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
Man that 360(H/S) numbers. All those new subscriptions and new players MS are bringing in their eco system.

Reminds me of what Yusuf once said in his PR language, we have more people who are yet to convert to this gen. At that time it sounded bogus, but since last 3 NPD I am convinced.

Now their messaging and tone has shifted to more gaming focused, I believe more current 360 owners are likely to purchase XBOne than PS4 in future.

This holiday is going to ve gang buster for MS. COD and Halo. Hollyfuckk

Go get a job that gives you access to this data, or put up the 6 figure cost for the feed and get back to us. Not willing to do that? Don't click the link.

No offense taken and your argument makes sense about the linking back by other sites. I also think it's fine that the aggregated numbers are taken down because I find the data an interesting curiosity every month but don't really care about it. But if the information was anything actually important and not just video game hardware / software sales data I would totally disagree with you.

The average gamer today probably has internet and googled Xbox one at least once after E3, if they did, they saw the avalanche of bad press.

Why do people think the average gamer is like a clueless sheltered 2d platform player.

Today even "parents" are informed because "parents" are gamers, back when I was a kid my folks weren't cause they didnt grow up with them. I did, and still do (I picked the console, not my kids, which wouldn't have happened when I was a kid). The average today is way more informed than 15-20 years ago.

Only because the people I personally know that are "gamers", none of them frequently follow the industry like I do.

Not speaking for everyone, but these same people upgraded to their system of choice, whether it was PS4 or XB1, regardless of price. Still think the average consumer saw the $400 price point and went with that.

Oh, definitely. If this was like Classified information from the gov't, just avoiding summary posts would be totally unacceptable. "Security through obscurity is no security." Here, we're just trying to not get anyone in trouble by providing simply traceable lines between data and sources about something that some of us hobbyists care about tracking but by no means can afford the cost to do so in a comprehensive manner. :)

do you see the 360 eventually surpassing the PS2 in the US?

Very unlikely to happen. 360 is about 4m behind PS2, and Microsoft and the industry has pretty much moved on from last gen. Therefore, it won't have years of support going forward like PS2 did. 360 sold ~1.3m this past year, and that should drop going forward.

Doubt it'll happen. Will probably end with a LTD of below 44m.

Makes sense. I wasn't sure on how much it sold in total last year, but yeah it is very likely that it will drop YOY.
How big was the drop in 2014?

"great" is relative to how poorly the wii u has been doing

december npd rankings:

1) gamecube december 2003 (3rd holiday) - 1.16 million
2) gamecube december 2004 (4th holiday) - 0.80 million
3) gamecube december 2002 (2nd holiday) - 0.62 million
4) gamecube december 2005 (5th holiday) - 0.61 million
5) wii u december 2014 (3rd holiday)
6) gamecube december 2001 (1st holiday) - 0.57 million
7) wii u december 2013 (2nd holiday) - 0.48 million
8) wii u december 2012 (1st holiday) - 0.46 million
9) gamecube december 2006 (6th holiday) - 0.20 million

the gamecube, in its prime (3rd holiday), managed 1.16 million in december.

the wii u is in its prime this holiday (its 3rd holiday), but it couldn't even manage 0.60 million.
For a system that has no backup or buffer of 3rd party in sight, it's doing amazingly and still at $300 too.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Trading Card Games are included in the tracking methods of NPD right? Does any of the usual people have the data?

Would love to see how the top 3 sold: Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokemon, Magic: The Gathering.

Just curious :)

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Yeah, considering where the system is coming from....it could be even worse. Cube was 99$ bucks at that time, still had a bit of 3rd party support and was on the same power level as the competition.

For 2015 Nintendo should get the official WiiU price down 200 $/€ as well a reintroduce older titles in a classics line for 30 bucks.

I think those numbers are great for the Wii-U.

Surprised me a bit. I thought maybe like 350-400k tops really. We know it wont be a successful console, but it may at least hold a steady decent number.

Did no one know it did a bit over 480K last December? It was kind of obvious it'd be up YoY w/ Smash & Kart, and if that wasn't the case, the Wii U was beating even the worst predictions.

Yes, how polite of them to attempt to obfuscate their chicanery. They're using every hard sale technique in the book these days. At this rate I won't be surprised if they start running commercials making fun of guys for wanting to consult their wives before making a purchase.

man, if you peeps think Wii U is doing " amazingly " I wonder what you think of the PS4?

Wii U is selling worse then the Gamecube. Hell I think at this point the only other system to match its weak sales WW is the Dreamcast.

Wii U is an utter failure coming off a 100,000,000 selling console like the Wii. You couldn't do much worse then what Nintendo is doing with the Wii U.

That said, I bought one back in early 2013 ... huge mistake ... for MH3U. Will be picking it back up later this year for Xenoblade and Zelda U ( hopefully ). Will have a nice backlog to dive into at that point.
