Sniper Elite 5 |OT| The French Connection

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Alright, finally got an invader. After a long cat and mouse dude just ran into me in mid sprint :D

The axis invader mode, especially with the kind of maps this game has, is an excellent addition.

Haven't seen anyone mention the use of the Dualsense controller's adaptive triggers yet. Feels really good and it's implementation towards the half-press shoulder aiming is fantastic. Shoulder aiming rifles is still very accurate and makes the close quarter combat situations more fun when you're dropping enemies with one shot to the torso.

Unpopular view, but I absolutely hate "x-ray damage" in video games, it's so childish and needlessly gross at the same time (yet another way that the Mortal Kombat series managed to turn gaming into something embarassingly immature). That's on the short list of things that are instant no-buy for me.

It's a shame, because they might have a decent sniping game here if they'd drop that stupidity.

I turned it off in the options in 5 min.

X-ray effect is okay if used extremely sparingly. It's fine in stuff like Riki-Oh because it's rare and used to only highlight internal damage. When used on every hit it's just annoying, so I turned it off.

I love the kill cams, but I do keep them at "Normal" frequency. They are really great for the explosions too.

And, as already mentioned, they can be turned off completely.

Seems the latest patch fixed a few things. The most notable so far is the audio from the giant cannons is now working properly.

It's also loud as hell and sounds great.

EDIT: Full Details

Sniper Elite 5 Update 1.05 Patch Notes | Sniper Elite 5 June 7 Patch Notes:

  • Fixed several missing sounds – most notably the big guns in ‘Atlantic Wall’
  • Fixed crash during checkpoint load
  • Fixed occasional crash that occurred when loading into an AMP maps
  • Fixed occasional crash that occurred on the Survival results screen
  • Fixed crash that occurred when shooting the Machine Gun Team ‘Loader’ then the ‘Gunner’ in quick succession (the patch fixed crash that occurred just from shooting the Loader before the Gunner)

But man it completely screws peoples games, the amount of times I see a couple of people on the final objective only to be perfectly headshot by me in a tower half the map away just sounds so unfun... for them.

They really need to make it so when the host kicks out the invader that it counts as a kill for the invader. Shouldn't even be an option.

Also killing players who play in co-op, spam the phones, as well as use focus for wall hacks AND shooting is super satisfying.

I think this would solve the whole downed host rage quitting too.

But yeah the coop vs you I feel is much more fair. When its 1v1 I feel like I can just run around the map and Bayonet them (dont underestimate rifle bayonet it lets you insta kill frontstab people, very useful against campers who sit in a guard tower or small one entrance room) with two I know im locked into an animation when stabbing someone so I actually try and set up sniper positions using my knowledge of the objectives from my campaign playthrough, it takes longer but often feels far more satisfying.

I kind of wish I could select to try and find coop games as the default.

I haven't tried the bayonets yet, but will have to now. I haven't completed the last 4 levels yet for campaign, but have done invasions on those maps. A little difficult when you're not sure what objectives even are.

The worst is loading into a game that the player has basically killed every soldier already. Or you hop into a game with players in co-op and they sit inside a building spamming the phone.

Honestly I think when you join the match you should appear on the map as a colored circle marker that covers a small area (so it's not very specific) that the host/Karl can see. Then they can disable phones at least for a little bit, but still allow the Karl player to get an idea of where you are/were. Circle of your general location could disappear after 30 seconds, while the phones could become available for Karl after 2 minutes or so.

Does this game really scratch the Splinter Cell/MGS itch, or is it more focused on just perfecting the sniping mechanics?

IMO, it scratches the itch pretty good. It's like a slower paced Phantom Pain, you can very reliably play the game with SMGs, pistols and melee as well.

Sniping is very important of course but it is not 100% mandatory.

Haven't played in a bit and seems I'm behind on some of the content released. Plus they just released more:
