Started on my big playthrough of the "official" Muv Luv release finally.

Does anyone know if there's a patch to restore the original music? I miss "not-livin la vida loca".

Easily the high part of the VN for me and, well, probably the only part I actually liked.
Just finished it and , god, I see what you mean now. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I just can't bring myself to like MLA. What's sad is I can see some really brilliant parts of it, specifically the basics of the story such as
subverting a generic high school harem comedy by using it to lead-in to a hardcore military sci-fi, humanity being able to compete with interstellar aliens on a semi-equal footing simply because they don't view us as a threat, and the comprehensive alternate history really helped to flesh out the world. I also want to give them points for the "gender is no object" philosophy the post-BETA world had, but that also leads into one of the many problems I had with the VN as a whole.

The game had so much fucking exposition. Excessive amounts. Exposition isn't bad in and of itself, but they just kept retreading the same content for hours upon hours, and Takeru kept learning the same exact lessons after every major arc. There's only so much "I learned [lesson] from [dead character]" I can take before it just gets repetitive. The game could have been half as long and told the same exact story. And for as mature as they tried to get with the story, it's still a fucking harem. I cringed so hard when the reason the entire main cast literally sacrificed themselves was because they all loved Takeru. Even characters that weren't technically in the harem seemed to worship his dick. It stops being a subversion when you're playing the tropes straight.

Even the happy ending, which I usually like, really disappointed me. Just because he cries when he sees the characters appear again doesn't change the fact that he's basically forgotten 40-50 hours of character development, which really robs the story of its emotional weight.

So yeah, overall I was disappointed. Now I guess I'm going to move on to Steins;Gate. I've already watched the anime, which I consider one of my favorites, so I'm pretty excited about this one.

Huh, I'm curious to hear your thoughts on it when you're finished, considering how well our tastes seem to align - I also consider the S;G anime to be one of my favorites, but I have yet to read the VN.

Finished White Album 2: Introductory Chapter. So far my only take away is that the protagonist is the biggest asshole I've ever seen that roams on my laptop screen. Now move on to Closing Chapter.

Have just finished VLR. I was prepared for a batshit crazy ending, but apparently I wasn't prepared enough. Really want to play DR V3 now so ZTD has to wait, but I can already guess what it's going to be about. Can't wait to see what all the hate is about.

I just had a wonderful, awful idea. Kind of want to name the Chaos;Child OT:
Chaos;Child |OT| Still a better murder mystery than Persona 4

But I dunno, that might come off poorly even though it's true.

In all honesty, I'm just trying to come up with something that will get people interested enough to click on it. Threads about announcements and trailers have had very little turnout, so I feel like a good OT title can go a long way.

If people already knew what the title was, I'd just go ahead with Welcome To Chaos World, but that doesn't tell the layperson anything at all about the game.

I was thinking maybe slipping in a Deadly Premonition reference could be appropriate, given their similarities. Or just a simple description like "Murders, Delusions, and SCIENCE" could be enough. I don't know.

I just want the title to see success, not hinging on its relation to Steins;Gate, because it really stands on its own. Hopefully it's well-received.

You could go with "About what kind of the noids you get" (or something better, of course, from the logo text). I did enjoy that proposed Yo Noid joke.

"Whose Eyes Are Those Eyes?" might be more appealing but I have no idea if Child actually uses that. Of course, I think banking on that Steins;Gate relation might actually be the best thing if you want to draw people in (something like "The Chaos Beyond The Gate", etc.) but I agree that it'd be cool to not rely on that, particularly as I'm sure the tone is very different and I don't want people to be mislead.

Yeah, I'm probably overthinking this. I just feel like the thread title should try to pull in the murder mystery fans instead of going for "inside jokes" when it's not really well-known enough to pull that off.

“Thrills, Chills, Delusions”. I dunno.

I don't think shitting on one of GAF's favorite RPGs in the title is a very good idea.

But I guess I just learned Chaos;Child is a murder mystery story, which is a plus.

Huh.

I wouldn't really call it horror, it's just another VN with
a meta twist that isn't executed that well.

Huh.

I'm hearing that it's decent, it's only like 5 hours long, and it's free, so... might give it a look after I wrap up CxM and V3 before I head into The Letter and Chaos;Child.

Does anyone know what's the difference between the PS3 release of Eiyuu Senki and the PC Eiyuu Senki Gold release? I loved the game to death on the PS3, currently thinking if I should double-dip for the Gold release. Also, will it be released on Steam?

Eiyuu Senki Gold is a different game (different scenario, different story). And it's not in English.

The PC release of Eiyuu Senki is pretty much the same as the PS3 one except it has H scenes instead of alternative ones. I don't think JAST has said if it will get a Steam release, but if it did, it'd probably be the same as the PS3 game.

Oh... That's too bad. I guess I'll skip it. I wonder why Fruitbat Factory didn't release the PC version instead of JAST USA.

I've heard of this game before! People told me it's basically Persona 2.9 because Persona 3 borrowed its structure (student by day, dungeon crawler by night). One day I might try it out and see if it's true.

If I remember right, Fruitbat doesn't want to dabble with outright porn games. I could have it wrong though. I kinda remember one of them answering the why on here though.

Also the All Ages version will be on Steam. Also, I didn't know Jast was doing it and releasing it on Steam. Hopefully it wont be a shit show.

I've never played Persona/SMT, but I do kind of like that about AliceSoft titles.

They usually mixup gameplay mechanics with every title, even in the same franchise. It's super risky, but it tends to pay off for them. I didn't expect anyone to be interested to be honest since people in the western VN fanbases I talk to tend to avoid either ero, or games that haven't been translated yet.

I guess I'll report back on how much I enjoy it.

I finished Danganronpa last weekend. The first two chapters felt a little weak, but after that things got so good I ended up going from the beginning of chapter 3 to the end in a single day, taking two days overall. I'm going to try to do the same with Danganronpa 2 this weekend, which I've heard is a bit longer, but I think I'll be more into it from the beginning so I think I can pull it off.

Imo DR2 has more lows than DR1. I was kinda bored for cases 2-4 but the rest of the game is fun. I hope you like it!

I'm disappointed in all the Chaos;Child reviews coming out where the reviewers haven't even read the true ending (or in some cases, any ending). And then at the same time they think they can compare it with Steins;Gate.

Imagine doing the same with 999. Or any Danganronpa. Ugh. Though that probably happened too and I just wasn't paying attention.

Can't wait for Steiner and DrCullenPhD's video review, I know they've completed the full game.

And to be fair, there aren't any horrible reviews so far by any means, but I feel like they should have been better representations of the game as a whole. Maybe reviews coming out around the North America release date will be more well-baked.

End rant.

Probs not. But the clueless reviews are always fun to share around and laugh at.
Yeah, you're right. I just wish the critical reception could at least match Steins;Gate, despite the trend of people jumping the gun in comparing the two. If that happens, I'll certainly be more than happy.

It's not like Steins;Gate (or 0) had amazingly high aggregate scores in the general gaming publications, either.

People should seriously give up on VN reviews.

Most of the reviews that are going for the true ending were never going to make embargo. Review code was sent out on the 5th, and embargo lifted today.

Even if you bum-rushed the VN, you're not getting the review out in time.

The game is very long and I don't know if reviewers had enough time to give it their all for a full review... At least that's what I plan to do before writing mine, reach every single ending and seeing everything the game has to offer.

Can someone explain to me how I even get started with the Steins;Gate or Chaos;Child series? I'm reading the reddit FAQ and apparently there's way more titles than I knew about and the series are connected which I didn't know!

It's more light connections in a shared universe. You don't need to play them all.

You can start with Steins;Gate or the upcoming Chaos;Child. Whatever one strikes your fancy.

I should dig up the explanation I posted a couple weeks ago, but for now: The only games officially out in English are Steins;Gate, Steins;Gate 0, and now Chaos;Child. And 0 came out after Child in Japan.

So really just play S;G first and you're good. And even then you could probably play C;C first without issue; I'd say you certainly could but I haven't played it yet to be sure.
