I enjoyed all three movies so this one is really difficult.

Get Out was a fantastic thriller but the 'twist' was a little obvious and I wouldn't really say that it was very scary. It is def a solid 8/10 film though with fantastic pacing and remained entertaining throughout.

Hereditary took me by surprise because I was expecting the usual kind of Hollywood bullshit but it actually had a few genuinely uncomfortable scenes and the ending wasn't what I expected at all. This was another solid 8/10 film but more of a horror film than Get Out so a better 'horror' movie by default.

The Witch was the most unique of the three. The setting was incredibly creepy, I don't think it was very predictable. It also had a few uncomfortable scenes and felt the most 'realistic' of the three despite its subject matter. There was an incredible sense of atmosphere over the entire film and it was also fantastically shot. I'd say it was slightly better than the other two and maybe a 9/10.

I would say as good as Hereditary and The Witch were, Get Out was truly incredible...

This was not only from a man who had never directed before, but his background was comedy and he wrote not only a brilliant suspense / horror flick, but the film is filled with an amazing look into the troubled past, the slave trade, how white people have appropriated Black Culture, and of course ownership of a fellow human being.

I myself don't agree with the message of the film, but I can't help but respect the level of work and dedication that went into it...

The type of cell phone the main character uses, the fact that the Director did studies and actually learned about real hypnosis not just imaginary mind control, similes and metaphors used continuously throughout the film.

You have to watch it more than once to notice many of the things you might have missed, even if you're not a fan of the overarching message anyone who's a fan of horror should give this a go, it's an awesome film which is why I'm not spoiling anything LOL

Define best? I enjoyed them all muchly.

Get Out was the most interesting.

Hereditary was the most scary

The Witch was the most well filmed and acted

They’re not horror movies are they?
They lack the violence and gore of a traditional horror movie.

I’m pretty sure these would be classed as Thrillers as it’s more about tension and less about psycho killers.

I didn’t watch hereditary as of now but I can hardly imagine that it is better than ‘the vvitch’. I’m not sure if I would call get out a horror movie but I’m not sure as well if ‘the vvitch’ is a horror movie.

I would rate get out with 7/10 and ‘the vvitch’ as a 9/10 movie. But I can understand that people don’t like the latter one at all. I’m curious how his new movie Nosferatu will pan out. Hopefully Hollywood won’t influence him too much in his vision.

Btw great thread.

still apoc-fan. Fuck them haters 😄

Hereditary for me. I really like all 3 movies and how they played with suspense and built up the tension throughout each film, it’s a close call. I just hope that these traits, well executed, become more commonplace in future horror movies. That would be great.

Hereditary and The Witch lacked violence and gore? Are you serious? Hereditary had some insanely messed up imagery, and The Witch, well it's in the trailer so not really spoiling much, so that baby that gets taken by the witch.........yeah. Even Get Out got pretty bloody near the end though not on the level of the other two.

Also, a horror film can totally have zero violence and gore. I mean, the original The Haunting is a classic horror film and has zero violence or gore. Heck, both the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween used little violence or gore, it was about what was clearly implied that made it scary.

Three good movies. Get Out is probably the least scary of the three.

Again, all solid choices. In my eyes I would say Hereditary barely edges The Witch. Both are very worth watching

They're horror. Modern horror. Boring, safe bullshit made for millenials.

The last thing these three films could be called are "safe", one of them tackles significant social commentary and the other two are filled with use of ambience and suspense over constant jump scares and the few times they get violent they hold nothing back, like a level of violence that feels more real and disturbing than say a Friday the 13th film would show.

Hereditary seriously creeped me out, first film in a long time to do that for me.

Get Out is visually stunning, and The Witch is just a very strange film imo.

they're all pretty good tbf, but i'd say Hereditary is the most original

Is the social commentary one Get Out? That felt safe to me. Boring too. Honestly it just felt like real life. Black people are usually seen as cool and the white people in the movie went overboard. Also, supernatural horror does nothing for me. I don't believe in ghosts. They will never be scary to me.

They attempt to evoke fear. That's makes them more "horror" than majority of the genre movies with lots of violence and gore.

I mean idk. I've seen so many. It's like any time somebody says a horror movie is 'atmospheric' I just find it to be boring. Maybe because I don't get scared. Anyway here's a few serious ones that don't bore me
halloween, exorcist, texas chainsaw, the burning, black christmas, nightmare on elm street, night of the living dead.
Friday the 13th is pretty boring. My Bloody Valentine is also pretty boring and people act like it's great.
Casino and Godfather are 2 of my favorite movies so I can handle long slow stuff.

Keyword being attempt :messenger_squinting_tongue:

i watched get out on hbo. it is legitimately a shitty movie. thats one where i can tell people to go fuck themselves on. there are no redeeming qualities and you can make up your own mind on why pepople like it
hereditary is a phenomenal movie. the ending is weak ill admit but i think if you get what the movie is trying to get across it will stick with you.
the witch is boring. straight up boring. it has one cool scene at the end but other than that nah.

Get out and hereditary both fall apart in the third act for me. I also couldn't stand the comic relief friend in the former and I found the weird casting of the son in the latter to be distracting. The Witch was just borderline perfection and was my favorite film that year.

All three are excellent films, but Get Out was more of a tongue-in-cheek comedy/horror than an outright horror like the other two.

Between The Witch and Hereditary I'd have to go with Hereditary, though I love them both.

I enjoyed the other two but I don't understand the praise hereditary gets, while it had shocking moments the story was just so corny it pulled me out so many times.

The thing about Get Out, is that it works well even if you see the reveal coming a mile off. Which is a good thing because is inspiration its very obvious for any genre fan of a certain age. Enjoyable though, with a solid third-act.

The Witch starts out well, and is handsomely mounted, but I thought was entirely unscary with an unsatisfying and slightly risible climax.

I've avoided Hereditary thus far because frankly I've been burned way too many times by recent highly-rated American supernatural "horror" movies.
