NPD Sales Results for November 2014 [Up3: NPD Data Error, AC:U #5]

I so much doubt their goal was the just barely edge out PS4 at a huge profit margin cost.

You're still assuming that their goal is to beat the PS4. I think PS4 sales a useful barometer of market activity, but outselling it isn't vital. They see that the market is willing to buy more consoles because the PS4 is selling very well, so they lower the price to capitalize on that demand. They don't need to beat the PS4 to be successful, just keep close to it on a month-by-month basis.

If Microsoft met their sales number goals than they're going to be happy, Sony vs. Microsoft doesn't matter in anything other than fanboy wars as long as Microsoft can still secure positive third-party relations and solid sales. If both the PS4 and the Xbox One sold over 1 million then both consoles "won".

Phil Spencer said:
"We shipped at the same time and we're in direct competition with the PS4," he admits. "I'm not going to duck that. I want to win. I want to win this generation, but I want to win more than I want the other guy to lose. I own a PS4, and it's not like I want it to get dusty or not have games. But I do want to sell a lot of Xbox Ones, and for many people that's a direct competition with the PS4. As the Xbox team, we are the underdog."

From the mouth of the horse himself.

did you buy DA2 new and pay 59.99 for it? I did ... buying this one used. Well deserved flop. you stick your nose up at the consumer and see where it gets you.

Fuck DA. will feel great to buy it off ebay.

Awww, come on now. I can understand feeling burned by DA2, but at least Inquisition is a good game.

What devastating costs? Are you a MS stock holder? Do you know their detailed financial plan?

It comes down to this, the brand is healthy and you guys are talking out of your ass.

I think you are conflating the MS brand with the Xbox brand. Of course the MS brand is healthy. The Xbox brand? Why would you drop your product to that low of a price if it is perfectly healthy?

uh, so

that 23% yoy hardware drop seems harsh

Not really. Last gen hardware sales are falling off sharply. Current gen hardware sales are fairly flat (forgot what they were last year), or at least not massively higher.

Well my predictions are dead and buried. Shouldn't have been swayed by the antedotal retail musings

Too optimistic on Wii U, too pessimistic on XB1/PS4, PS4 especially

Oh well

the last card nintendo can play is redugin the price, let's try to guess: what would a $149.99 smash bunble would do for the console?

that could really bring the console near 20 million in my opinion.

The GamePad alone costs $100 to replace. Either they drop the price and bleed money, or they maintain the status quo while they quietly work on their next console. Price is not the problem. The toxicity of the Wii brand name is.

look at what they did for black friday this year

hint: NOTHING AT ALL. no price drops, mediocre ass bundles

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if they just left it at $299 until the next console drops, to squeeze as much profit out of the Wii U as possible.

Maybe $250. If they were ever going to try a dramatic price drop, this year was the year to do so. The year you drop the two biggest games this system is going to receive. The year where excitement for the console is at the highest it's ever going to be.

Did you not read what you quoted? Microsoft made some hardcore deals to get that 1 million, you think they'll keep up the pace once the price goes back to normal?

People aren't going to buy 399 Xbones anymore. This is really, really bad if true.

Absolutely not, but I don't think people were gonna buy 399 Xbox Ones regardless. I always saw going back to 350 as inevitable.

And yeah, Microsoft had to make major cuts, but the devastation for that probably settled in long ago when they made the decision to make major cuts.

that's messed up

The new consoles launched last year tho, on top of stronger PS360 sales a year ago.

They can't lower the price unless they want to bleed money. The GamePad is still expensive to manufacture due to the NFC reader. They have to grin and bear it for another year or two. Arguably the most poorly designed console in history.

That's the dilemma with consoles and gimmicks man, at least MS was willing to ditch Kinect. That Gamepad is hardly even being used.

I'd like to know this as well.

This is Microsoft you are talking about, all they ever want is to be market leader

Because being in 2nd place is horrible and the Xbone is doomed because GAF says so.
Because despite massive price cuts and the best bundle deals out of all the systems MS was only able to do 10k better than a system that by all accounts sort of just sat things out until the last few days of the month and arguably the worst bundle deals of the lot.

Sony more or less did nothing, and virtually tied. MS tried everything they could, and virtually tied.

Hate to be that guy but, the PS4 hasn't even revealed its true form yet. And FWIW I put XBO ahead by a 100k+ lead. I should smack myself for that one.

Having a meaningful presence in only one or two countries isn't successful.

If one of those countries has a marketshare of almost half of the remainder of the world, I think it's workable. I have the same reservations when I see people propping up the retail importance of the Japanese market for consoles.

This is the first time since 2009 that Just Dance didn't chart in the November NPD. I wonder what sales are looking like year over year.

On the one hand Wii U number is not good, if expected given the crappy deals.

On the other hand software and Amiibo numbers seem like a stark improvement, so they seem to have made a great deal of money.

If Amiibos do take off, the next months could see Wii U gaining a bit more popularity.

December will be interesting.

If anything this proves Amiibos sales to Nintendo fans not potential new WiiU owners.

"Cumulative PS4 & Xbox One sales are now almost 80 percent higher than the combined total of PS3 and Xbox 360 sales after 13 months..." -NPD

Using 75% as the minimum increase and 80% as the maximum.

PS4 + Xbox One ranges from 1.79 million to 2.09 million.
What were LTDs last month? Anyone?

We gotta make sure this is legit though. But if this is true then my GOD. Whoever at Playstation who decided to keep the price the same should be rewarded.

im not salty at all. The fanboyism is shinning through in this thread. MS wont "win". They know this. They care about their brand being healthy which it is. Thats all that matters to them.

To quote you:

What devastating costs? Are you a MS stock holder? Do you know their detailed financial plan?

But you're clearly not talking out of your ass. :^)

I don't understand why you're looking at this just from the perspective of a console war. Yeah, if you're looking at this as Sony vs. Microsoft then you're right, but just in terms of sales Microsoft was likely extremely successful this holiday season.

Huh? How can you not look at it as a console war? That's what it is. 2 companies selling consoles going to war with each other to best the other. Competition!

Microsoft had to put out an insane bundle, many of them just to virtually break even with the PS4. That's not a very good thing especially considering what 2015 has in store for the PS4
