800K-1.2M instead of 7k?

lol, you got me there.
About:
800k PS4
1,2kk Xbox One

Marketing/Logistics/etc do add to COGs per unit. It's not all about how much it cost to manufacture, but the dollar invested per console from a marketing standpoint.

At launch, there was a bit of a loss, which is apparently recouped back with a purchase of one game and PS+.

Currently, it's profitable at a hardware level.

Yeah ok, that makes sense.

Done estimates put it at 3 million LTD in the US Anihawk?

Shows just how badly the platform is doing.

Shit sales that for any other platform would mean dead and buried still warrant the term "raising".

Still the most alarming aspect is those software sales. Hardware sales are to be expected for the platform. But these software numbers are becoming a consistent trend. Big game release nearly all software sales are consolidated to that one title, and then dreadful until the next release.

Its kind of funny that people act like the dreamcast was doing okay after all was said and done ( ergo it failed because SEGA ran out of money) when its sales place was slower than the Wii U and comparable to the Vita's curve.

Delayed worldwide launch must be screwing with people's timetables.

wii u ytd: 990,000
wii u jan-november 2013: 736,000

vita (+ptv) jan-oct 2014: ~199,000
vita jan-november 2013: 372,000
vita feb-november 2012: 1,105,000 (launch was in february)

no numbers for vita for this month yet.

Jeez, Xbox One really did singlehandedly outsell the Wii U's entire year in a month. Hell the PS4 outsold its 2013 too.

MS is hungry, no doubt about it. But will they maintain the price drop?

And damn no dragon age? Guess DA2 caught up with them.
I look forward to the same thing happening with the next Asscreed
It looks like it already happened. It isn't like being bundled caused Destiny or COD to spill out of the top five opening month.

I'm also dubious on EA somehow being happy with the DA:I numbers. The press is way further up that game's ass than any of the "new" games in the top ten. I figured Farcry 4 was going to be the game to suffer because it was too close to Ubi's biggest game of the year, and it came out on the same day as another popular open world action game. Maybe some of the Unity sales went there.

I tried searching it but too many results are coming back. What was it all about?

Resolution. CBOAT insisted it would be lower. He was wrong.

But where does the dragon fit in?

The mighty dragon is still said to slumber, but the impact to its riches will surely be keenly felt.

Though all is not as it seems, there are rumours from the south that it has begun to stir... The loss of riches is said to have been so devastating that it has awoken the beast from it's decades long slumber. Tremors can be felt coming from Red Mountain....

Reading the doom in here about Sony is pretty funny. 2015 is going to blow 2014 out of the water software wise. The sales will stay strong throughout the year. Can MS keep up this type of momentum especially with a $299 PS4 coming down the pipe around E3?

The answer is no. US sales matter, but not so much that Sony needs to do anything drastic considering their worldwide dominance. And this even if Microsoft wins December NPD.

A $299 PS4 around E3 time sounds really right, panic-free and logic-based.

looks like the vita (partially thanks to playstation tv) broke the 2m barrier this month. i don't think that's something the saturn did in the us.

Something along the lines of the Xbox One version being 720p instead of 792p and the Xbox 360 version being closer in quality than the final product delivered.

Wait, was Wii U's first full year on the market in the U.S. actually worse than PS3 in 2007?

I personally would of been shocked if Microsoft didn't outpace the competition this November, I mean they were practically giving them away.(Some awesome deals in Australia and America for the XB1)

In Australia Microsoft were offering the console for $499 AUD Assassins Creed Unity Bundle+3 Games+12 Months Live and then you use a promo code and the price was $480AUD or so.(Free Shipping too)

America had similar deals from what I heard, It was hard for Sony to beat this, even though I don't own one yet(decided to wait as I already have a PC,PS4,WII U) it does make me Happy that Microsoft is serious about their console.

I wonder if the sales will hold for the following months, only time will tell however I'm happy either way as come next year around this time, the deals will be even more Insane.

Just a question: were there deals for One that put the console at 279.99 basically (329.99 + some special gift card deal)? I kind of remeber something like that, but not sure currently.

Target & Microsoft Store.

The former had $50 GC, and the latter gifted one free retail game of choice.

Which is why I think Inquisition will have more legs than any of those other games. I think it'll be ok. (I mean, media is up its ass for a reason --- the game really is super good and that word of mouth is legit.)

Knew it was bad, but that is incredible.

yeah the cries for people to just give it a chance should fall on deaf ears. the system is expensive to make games for and handhelds are difficult to make your money back with if your budget is too big or you haven't worked on building a fanbase already.

i've said it before but 2015 is pretty much it for the vita. the system will probably hit 300,000 for 2014 but that will be down a good 35% or so year over year. i can't see the system being supported even among the smaller developers in 2016 unless there's a ps4 version of a game also happening.

I really hope sony responds with a temporary price cut in North America. Mostly because I want to get one.

They are more than $120 more expensive than x1 here in Canada. Sony should stop messing around and drop their price.

Thanks for the info, this goes beyond having an "opinion" and if he stuck to it after somebody in the know called him out (or the truth came out), I am very surprised he didn't lose respect right there and then.

I am not visiting GAF as often as I used to but it was a lot saner back then. Now even a certain mod (which has a history of being a Sony fan but there is nothing wrong with that by itself) jumped on the bandwagon of giving credence to his BS which is embarrassing.

Sony has no reason to drop the price.

I still think they are going to wait till mid/late 2015 and do a cut to $299 like the PS2. PS4 is still dominating and selling at a ridiculously fast pace.

What a strange night. First, the Bone wins, then "news" comes out that the win was by a sliver. Next we proceeded to embark upon an in depth analysis of the definition of Pyrrhic, at which pint i had to go to bed.

I woke to see the Bone actually won by around 400k, selling over 1.2m.

Now, both clearly sold very well but MS will be very encouraged by that.

It's pretty clear the PS4 will have WW in it's pocket this gen, but the Bone is undeniably competitive now and will continue to be. I've said before that 2015 will see the Bone win 4/5 months of NPD, with PS4 winning the rest (and a couple of those months by a wide margin i.e. when Bloodborne is released)

However, MS have belatedly developed a proposition that consumers are really attracted to.

The comments about their steps to get there (not bundling their peripheral/lower price etc) were not desperation, just adjustment to the market. Sony did precisely the same thing, only they had the sense to do it before the console was released.

As such, we now have two substantially similar pieces of tech, one of which has more graphical grunt, the other being more flexible in what it can do.

Interesting to see if MS pick up December too, but clearly they have momentum.

Why? They are still selling a lot of units while being profitable. MS can sell the console below its manufacturing cost and take the hit, Sony can't and won't.

Really funny reading everyone hang off of cboat's post (again), when he was completely off the mark. I've never understood the brolove for him on here.

Anyway, congrats MS - looks like you rocked it!

Also an awesome job by Nintendo!

How long did it take for the Saturn to be discontinued in the US?

three years, from may 1995 to november 1998. it wasn't discontinued in japan until the end of december 2000 though, if you can believe that. it actually outsold the n64 there that generation.

the saturn sold about 250k in the us in 1997. it sold almost a fifth of that in 1998. the saturn only ever sold about 1.3m in the states. it was an enormous failure.

More like $349.99, I know Sony wants US but they're not that suicidal to drop $100. The best you'll see it's a $349.99 bundle and maybe a new $399 SKU with 1TB because lord knows we'll need that if these games keep getting bigger.

well, the cards mainly. umds were a lot less expensive, which is why niche developers flourished on the psp and why they were drawn to it. if you're only going to sell 20,000 units of a game anyway then why not do it for the system with the lowest development costs?

things are shifting now, though. 3ds is looking better and better, and mobile/steam is becoming an inevitability.

Yeah I was aware it did much better in Japan (hence all of those quality imports), whereas the N64 was kind of a flop over there. It's honestly kind of fascinating, the Vita is perceived as being largely irrelevant and unimportant here and yet within just over two years it still sold better than the Saturn, a console from one of the big three console manufacturers (at the time) that was on the market for well over three years. And yet it fared much better in Japan, where the N64 struggled. I'm sure there was a huge difference between the west and Japan in how 2D games were perceived in the mid-late 90s.

I think they said they planned the PS4 so they could cut the price easily. PS4 would of been on the markets for 2 years by then. I just thought the PS2 model would be adopted in the Ps4's case to maintain its rapid sell rate.

However, MS have belatedly developed a proposition that consumers are really attracted to.

Not sure MS shareholders/bosses are attracted, too. This business is already least profitable to them and on the verge of spin-off if continues to underperform compared to their other divisions.

That win was more needed for X-box bosses to claim 1. They turned tides 2. Convince big 3rd party publishers not to abandon the ship/switch lead development to XB1 3. Attract indies.

If You have to come close to breaking even during Holiday period, what do You want to achieve ? Businesses exist to earn money not market share. Market shares are for execs to brag about how successful they are and mean nothing if money doesn't follow.

So big time win, expected and deserved, but from the business standpoint its a 1mm thin ice.
