NPD Sales Results for May 2015

Good going Splatoon! Between this, its 200k+ sales in Japan, its high chart placements in EU and its pre-order numbers on par with Mario Kart 8 in Canada... I think it's fair to say it's a big new IP and we'll see more of it.

Which I'm very happy with. Looove that game. My household has 58 hours on it in just two weeks and we still can't put it down.

Wonder if Sony will give a total update at E3. I think its likely. I also wonder if they'll mention this month's NPDs or maybe the past year since E3. All but 3 of the months went to Sony, right? November, December, and April were won by XBOX.

I'd save that announcement for the Paris games even they'll be at.

Wii contraction is no longer a factor. The market lost that crowd years ago. Sales of both PS4 and X1 stateside are well up on their predecessors.

You can't do a direct comparison. X360 had stock issues following launch. PS3 sold like a rock. PS4 and X1 have had available stock without issue, for the most part.

Surprised to see The Witcher PS4 SKU on top, what an incredible debut for the franchise on this platform!

Also great to see MLB hanging on!

Splatoon with only 3 days huh? So I guess it should keep it's top 5 position next month? June is rather quiet apart from Batman.

No it's not. Population wise is the only reason Wii u sometimes is higher HW sales wise, the equality has Japan ahead, and Software is atrocious in NA/.

Also your first sentence is completely dumb because I said it was doing well in japan so how can you make a statement of "Some people can't accept the fact?" Especially since not only I said it did well in a country outside this one, but also you have no numbers/

Yes, it really is. Wii U is absolutely a healthier platform in North America than it is in Japan. Wii U's numbers aren't "sometimes" higher in NA...they're always higher. Every single month. By a significant amount, even. Are you aware that consoles are on life support in Japan?

North America is Wii U's strongest market by far and this really isn't debatable. Of course, "strongest" isn't saying much in this case, but it's still true.

I assumed Splatoon would chart below the Witcher, but below all those older titles too? In a month where retail software was down 25% and after they gave it such a huge marketing push? Nintendo's "Mario Kart presale" PR comparison just confuses me even more now.

Why would The Witcher 3 on PS4 being on top be surprising?

There are more PS4s out there and RPGs tend to sell better on PlayStation.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

You realize only four days of sales are counted on this, right?

Mario Kart comparison was for Canada. This is only US NPD.

Two days.

Actually, I am wondering if there's a few FPSes out there just experimenting and prototyping modes that mimic the territorial aspects of Splatoon.
There are, there was one xbox arcade game that was terrible and never released and some idiots thought nintendo stole the idea from them.

Not much of a mark for Splatoon, it's number 5 with 3 days on the market. I believe we have seen where it will stand. Still not bad, but a contrast compared to Japan. Then again, Wii U is still alive over there.

Wait what? The Wii U is completely dead in Japan until the past couple weeks, where it's doing better than the miserable sales of everyone else.

Congrats to Splatoon though! #5 puts it easily over 100K based on the other entries, perhaps closer to 200K?

Surprised Nintendo hasn't released anything. I want those Splatoon numbers!

Only two days though.

Well my predictions were dead wrong. I kind of expected a repeat of last month, with Xbone eking out a win but neither console moving huge numbers.

And what happened with Microsoft's marketing of Witcher 3? I don't recall seeing a single advertisement for it here in the states.

The last part is interesting, since it specifically mentions unit sales, and not sales with no specifications (which can mean revenue). Math experts, I summon ye!

More than 4 million hardware units sold between January - May 2015

This includes PS4, XOne, Wii U, PS3, X360, Wii, Vita, 3DS, PSP & DS & other consoles.

Current gen consoles sales are not very good right now on US. Combined user base is because record launch and algo this ignore Wii.

Why not compare combined 360/PS3/Wii with XBO/PS4/Wii U ?

Some arguments justifying low hardware sales based on the cumulative hardware totals for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are higher than previous generation at the same point in their lifecycles reminds me of those early 3DS vs NDS comparisons. And omitting Nintendo Wii has never made sense to me.

Looks like it is 3rd party software that moves the PS4. When the big hitters come out the PS4 sells. Without that the lower price of the XB1 pushed it ahead.

I'm hopeful it means, more than anything, that people are getting way smarter about advertising partnerships.

EDIT: Wait, year-to-date means first 5 months or May only, just to clarify.

IDK but ~200k remaining between PS4 and Wii U?

The Witcher PS4 beating out XBO is interesting given the marketing arrangement that latter had in place.

Fascinating that run-of-the-mill FPS games, even with a marketing deal in place with PS4, win on XBO. As for everything else, not so much.

Wow PS4 version of almost every game (except Minecraft) outsold the XBone counterpart. I don't think I've seen that happen before. Usually at least some game like a sports or FPS game sells better on Xbone.

I think absolutely every single review being played on ps4 put the final nail in the coffin.

2 different demographics. If TW3 was an FPS I do believe it would have beat out PS4 in the US.

Splatoon 5th. But I wonder what that actually means in sales numbers. Can't imagine the games it beat are still selling high numbers every month.

The USA has about 2.5 times the population of Japan. The Wii U has sold 2.3 million units in Japan. If the Wii U in the US had equal sales per capita as Japan, that would mean it would be at 5.75 million units in the USA, which I doubt it has. And you are saying the Wii U is a lot healthier in the US than Japan, not even just equal? I don't buy that.
