Good for Splatoon! Haven't played it yet (probably won't anytime soon) but people seem to be enjoying it and I always like Nintendo getting a new IP out there.

I'll also echo the surprise at Witcher PS4 outselling X1 with the marketing partnership MS had on that, wonder how they feel about that and if they're considering it a waste (or maybe it didn't cost that much?).

I wonder if Sony will announce 25m consoles during E3? Might not be quite there yet.

They won't have even shipped that many, let alone sold through that many.

PS4 maybe will sell 100 million. I really doubt Xbox One can sell 60 million to reach 160m combined.

I feel like everyone is really over estimating market size.

Personally, 150m max between PS4/One and Wii U come end of 2019.

The XB1 is outselling the 360 as well. The only difference is Nintendo underperforming.
Just to add something to the "Nintendo underperforming" discussion. Edit: Saying, while it's mostly "their fault", we have a couple of million users lost by the other two companies.

SCE just had their worst hardware year since 1997.

I wonder how much of the success of Splatoon and failure of Codename "Project" Steam is due to art style alone. The second both games were revealed people had visceral reactions to the art and character designs of each. Unconfined joy at Splatoon, disgust at Steam. Then the ridiculous amount of Splatoon fanart and attendant constant forum posts just seemed to build up this massive wave of hype that carried it home.

I mean, if Splatoon played the exact same but looked like Steam, would it have done half this well? I don't think so. Lesson learned: cute edgy squids and modern fashion = win.

The last part is interesting, since it specifically mentions unit sales, and not sales with no specifications (which can mean revenue). Math experts, I summon ye!

EDIT: Wait, year-to-date means first 5 months or May only, just to clarify.

The lack of Vita any numbers this year makes portable numbers harder to predict.

The 3DS was in April up 65% for the year IIRC.

XB1+PS4+Wiiu first 4 months this year + 139K for XB1

Which means PS4 + Wiiu = 178K

People should compare more years than single months to past gen. Sales are more and more concentrating to holidays and around tentpole releases.

If true, this means that consoles are no longer mass market gaming devices, they're luxury goods that people don't buy for themselves any longer but get gifted at holidays.
It also means they're not competing for general entertainment product dollars anymore, they're competing with whatever shows up on "Hot gifts for Him" lists annually.

Splatoon's marketing effort was extremely strong. Couldn't walk into a store that sells games without seeing that shit all over the place.

Witcher 3 is definitely deserving.

Took me a second look to realize the consoles/handhelds did not correlate with the lines they were next to

NO NO NO.

They mean all hardware sales, not just gen 8.

Learn to read.

The total number of hardware units sold will be over 4 million across PS4/PS3//PSV/One/360/Wii/WiU/3DS & others between January and May 2015.

Next gen hardware is stable. So likely Wii U and PS4 will be over 200k combined this month.

I still remember when Sony had sent CDPR some devkits.

Then they revealed their game on Microsoft's stage.

Look how far we've come.

Time flies.

360 actually sold a little more jan-may 2007 than Xbox One jan-may 2015. We need to look at more recent periods to understand current situation.

Overall Xbox One had a record launch for the brand when 360 was very supply constrained.

Or one's a pick-up-and-play multiplayer online shooter and one's a realtime strategy game.

There are, there was one xbox arcade game that was terrible and never released and some idiots thought nintendo stole the idea from them.

Oh, I'm aware of that. I'm thinking the big FPS franchises, the CODs of the world. Nothing too serious, just a little light experiment to see if they can transplant the essence of the territorial control aspects into the existing engine.

Overall hardware (consoles + handhelds) are down 1%, 8th generation hardware is "stable" according to the analyst report.

I assumed Splatoon would chart below the Witcher, but below all those older titles too? In a month where retail software was down 25% and after they gave it such a huge marketing push? Nintendo's "Mario Kart presale" PR comparison just confuses me even more now.

2 days of sales versus multi-platform sales over a month. Individual SKUs it's probably behind only PS4 Witcher 3/XB1 Witcher 3

Splatoon should chart again in June based off Amazon US sales. It's been the best-selling available game that's not on sale/pre-orders. It was out of stock for a bit.

Also on Nintendo's eShop a week ago it was the best-seller over the Nindie Bundle games, so it probably did at least 20-40k on the eShop.

Hardware units, as in all hardware units. Next gen specifically is "stable" like last month.

Edit: double beaten...

Amazing for a title that was traditionally PC and it sold the most on PS4. No publisher/dev regret there I bet.

It did sell very well on PS4, however, since this only accounts for retail sales it is difficult to tell how it did wrt PC since most of those sales will be digital.

Not really. Neither is at a real mass market price.

The Witcher PS4 beating out XBO is interesting given the marketing arrangement that latter had in place.

Fascinating that run-of-the-mill FPS games, even with a marketing deal in place with PS4, win on XBO. As for everything else, not so much.

Eh not really insteresting honestly. I haven't seen much Xbox advertisement for TW3 at all. The FPS thing should be expected though since the biggest Xbox franchise is Halo so naturally a lot of shooter fans would gravitate towards that console.
