About the sequel...I think NX would be a much better fit, at this point. Now, I could see a Splatoon spinoff coming to 3DS next year, to keep the brand in people's mind before the actual sequel on NX.

Proper sequel (Spaltoon "2") will be released for NX without a doubt. I'm expecting they'll released rev.1.5 or something equivalent to 3DS also.

That's huge. So that puts Splatoon at ~370k combined.

That would be accurate, given how Nintendo provided these figures in the 1 million sold press release:

Nintendo has today announced that, according to internal company figures, sales of its new Wii U exclusive Splatoon have crossed 1 million worldwide. This figure is said to include more than 476,000 physical and digital units sold in the Americas, over 368,000 sold in Japan, over 230,000 sold in Europe, plus a further 20,000 sold in Australia and New Zealand.

Yeah, perfectly in line with nintendo data released today (368k combined in Japan)

Well, it will be the best-selling game on the Japanese eShop so yeah, it's good.

you are right, wow. Didn't expect that at all, initially.

So...what about that Smash U vs Splatoon comparison chart? It seems far fetched few days ago, but now..
Do we have also Smash U digital numbers?

There might be publishers who are willing to develop and market nicher products - and find them profitable (isn't what it's happening for basically 90% of PSV games?). It would be unreasonable, on Marvelous' part, to invest a lot in a dormant franchise that had been a Sony exclusive for 10 years. It might also seem a way to break the annual HM / RF rotation while keeping simulation games fans busy with a similar product.

Actually, on this note, which series still get released by Marvelous?

I'm filtering back to July 2013 (~2 years ago today) and getting the following:
-Senran Kagura (2015)
-Harvest Moon (2014)
-Kinki No Manga (2014, did 40K LTD)
-Bakumatsu Rock (2014, though this is a really low seller at 10K between PSP/Vita)
-Valhalla Knights 3 Gold (2013, not heard much since, and this was a re-release)

Obviously they just released PoPoLoCrois and IIRC they have Valkyrie Dive or something upcoming.

Is there anything I'm missing?

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Well, it will be the best-selling game on the Japanese eShop so yeah, it's good.

It isn't. Dragon Quest X is still the best selling one.

And I suppose the "DQX vanilla" label includes all the expansions as well, otherwise I don't know why it still appears in normal charts, despite the expansions being out. If it includes expansions + discounted upgrades from Wii to Wii U...I fear it's a number no other games could possibly achieve.

A major flop by Nintendo with a third party game dominating digital charts. #theironyisreal

In that timeframe, no. One can say that Rune Factory is still alive since the last sold more than 200k in Japan and was a hit in North America.

I suppose we'll hear more about Rune Factory in the future. Marvelous now has the original development team, right?
And yeah, strange Valhalla Knights hasn't been seen since 2013. IIRC, the original 3 did quite well by series standards, but I don't remember how Gold performed.

The second-best selling game in the Japanese eShop.

That would be accurate, given how Nintendo provided these figures in the 1 million sold press release:

At 370K we're shooting up the shooter chart pretty fast with not many signs of slowing down.

While the higher parts of the chart still seems like a stretch, it's going to rank very well in the end. It's pretty easy for me to imagine it going above Dirge of Cerberus.

(For the benefit of others, your chart from a previous thread.)

RE6 (PS3+360) - 837,774+39,363
MGS3 (PS2) - 819,807
MGSPW (PSP) - 791,761
GTA5 (PS3) - 729,533
MGS4 (PS3) - 706,461
RE5 (PS3+360) - 520,564+123,817
Dirge of Cerberus FFVII (PS2) - 513,157
Yakuza Dead Souls (PS3) - 417,504
CoD BO2 Subbed (PS3+360) - 336,319 + 21,804

Famitsu numbers, only counting single release SKUs, no re-releases or late ports.

Ah yeah, Rune Factory is most likely still around.

That's mainly what I was wondering, if there were announced games coming up or things that wouldn't be in that timeframe that were plausibly still around.

There's still Luminous Ark Infinity too. Not sure it's going to sell well but it's another Marvelous series they seem interested in pursuing.

Huh, how on earth did the PS4 manage to sell twice the amount of wiiu this year?
I thought it was almost every week sub 10k.

I don't think you've been paying attention, using MC numbers it hasn't been below 10k at all this year. There was even a stretch in Feb/March where it was doing 30-50k for several weeks in a row.

edit: same with Famitsu numbers

Also, since there were people worried for The Great Ace Attorney going by Comgnet...it has a second SKU. Right now, it's at 41pts.

So that 6m between US/Japan. Wonder what WW sales are at, at this point. With the way it is tracking behind PSP we will probably never know though unfortunately.

Well there was a thread recently about how Vita LTD sales in Spain were at 600k, I think I read that UK, France and Germany were around ~500k each.

With the remaining markets it's probably around 10M worldwide, but Sony probably won't bother to make any official announcement when that milestone is reached (if it isn't already).

I really have not, opening these threads is depressing :p
My expectations for both wiiu and ps4 would have been around an average of 10k a week though so that 2:1 ratio is a bit surprising.

Splatoon does well, a fresh IP deserves good sales.

500k+ is a lock at this point, and 600k+ is certainly within reach. There's clearly more demand than supply, and it seems pretty leggy. It'll be pretty funny if the game manages to outsell Smash on WiiU!

Not surprised by Splatoon legs i knew it will have this kind of legs.
If it wasn't Devil May Cry 4 the source of ps4 boost,xb1 wouldn't be boosted this week

At this point, I'd love to see 3DS/Wii U only (no VC/DsiWare titles) All-Time Charts. For 3DS, we know Urban Trial Freestyle sold over 100,000 as well, so we have an additional reference in the case.

What it matters this week:

Sales of Splatoon, the new squid-based game for Nintendo’s Wii U home console, have crossed 1 million worldwide, according to Nintendo’s internal figures.
That figure includes more than 476,000 physical and digital units sold in the Americas, more than 368,000 sold in Japan, more than 230,000 sold in Europe and an additional 20,000 sold in Australia and New Zealand.

Nintendo uses Media Create

Retail
[WIU] Splatoon <ACT> (Nintendo) {2015.05.28} (¥6.156) - 310.582

Digital
[WIU] Splatoon <ACT> (Nintendo) {2015.05.28} (¥6.156) - 58.000

If you use Famitsu just 20k pure digital. Can't wait for "estimates".

I'm pretty sure sequel in 3DS is a lock.

I have to say, I'm not sure how well the 3DS could handle the gameplay. There's very heavy emphasis on persistent decals and that can be kind of brutal on hardware, depending - admittedly - on how exactly it's all implemented.

I think we'll see the IP on 3DS in some form, but I'm not sure it's necessarily in the form of a direct sequel.

I think the philosophy behind Splatoon might well be what resulted in Metroid: Federation Force; kid friendly multiplayer, but this time in a form directly pitched at the handheld market.

I suppose we'll hear more about Rune Factory in the future. Marvelous now has the original development team, right?

Gold seemed to do pretty badly, but 3 did pretty well considering it's such a poorly-received series. I'm surprised they haven't had K2 LLC working on a 4th to be honest.

It's funny how all those multiplat (PC, Xbox, PS) games are basically Playstation 4 exclusives in Japan.

So how does Splatoon hardware bumps compared to MK. Seems like it's one of the better hardware movers without counting the holiday effect. Unexpected titles seem to be better at driving demand and buzz, stuff like Wii sports, Monster Hunter and now Splatoon on a lesser scale really show the importance of innovation and diversification. Mario Kart is great, people bought the console for Mario Kart but many did before it released because it was a known element, not driving the buzz forward.

Splatoon really seems like it'll give Nintendo a very positive feedback.

It looks poised to have a notably better opening, which fits with a significant expansion on the series.

I wrote more about why this is happening compared to other underperformers this year here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=169324217&postcount=477
Very good analisis. I'd also point out that the dual campaign allows them to have very different aesthetics that will be favored by different peope.

Looks like for consoles the average will be like 16k a week. With big spikes here and there for a few weeks to a month when the big game hits.

We'll see what happens in 2016 when some huge titles release that are actually exclusive though. That will be pretty telling.

Was there any holiday last week or something?

Curious because sales increased for Nintendo games.

Well, June is bonus payment.

But Smash received Ryu and others this week, and AC: Happy Home Designer pre-orders just opened.
I don't see anything strange about the increases.

The smartest thing Nintendo could do, I think, would be to figure out how to make the NX into handheld hardware that can accept downgraded ports from PS4 without too much hassle.

Whether that's feasible, I'm not too sure, but given there's reasonable PS4/Vita crossover, there should be something manageable there.

Imagine an alternative universe in which the Wii U launched with Splatoon, Smash, and Mario Kart (granted, there would probably be a year gap before another big Nintendo game after).

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U - 529,244 in it's first month
But keeping in mind that was during December I think Splatoon won't take too long to catch up especially with the impending August update where more people will probably pick it up as the value proposition and hype continues to build. We shall see how big it becomes, but things are looking real good in Japan for Splatoon especially with the fan art from famous manga artists coming out. I expect Splatoon to actually sell more than SSB Wii U due to the fact there was also SSB 3DS Released

Sincerly, I don't know. I don't say sales back at the PS2's first chapter wouldn't have been nice (I mean the one with the 90k opening), they would've been great. But it's also true this is a series that disappeared for so long that I don't know what were their reasonable expectations. I'm sure their hope was to bring the series back to that, but I think it's possible their expectations are more in line with what the game did in the first week. I suppose they had forecasts a bit better, for sure, though. I said "decent" due to the game (at least) being decently (sorry for the repetition) up compared to the last two games in the series.

Well, they didn't bring back the series alone, they paired it with a well established franchise, so I think it's reasonable for them to expect much more than the last entries.
