Stranger Things' David Harbour's rousing SAG Awards speech

I'm sorry that I keep having a go at you about this, and it's not personal at all - I appreciate the sentiment behind this. But you cannot keep asking victims to understand their oppressors. The response to being beaten, to being called less than human, to being told your life is sin, to having an entire political party craft legislation targeting you, cannot be to reach out an shrug them.

On a daily basis these people oppress and diminish others. Not only do I think it unfair that you place the burden of their monstrous behaviour onto their victims, I also believe it's a waste of time. For every person who you can change, there are literally thousands who will double down on their actions.

The response to this isn't a meeting in the middle, isn't 'understanding' - because there's nothing to understand, it's just racism and homophobia and everything else. The response is to shame and remove this type of behaviour and dialogue from the public discourse. That's the only way you'll get long term change - you aren't going to persuade some fucked up racist in the south to change, and asking the victims of their violence and evil to do that and putting the responsibility on them is asking too much.

I'm more afraid that there are a lot of people taking themselves out of the conversation because they can't deal with what it going on. That is the wrong approach. If you believe you are on the right side of history, you make your voice even louder, you get others with you to get louder...then you get the people who are on the fence to hear you out. You don't have to worry about changing the minds of those who's minds won't change...but it is important to rally those who are only on the fence or are currently indifferent to what is going on.

I think we can advocate violence when he's clearly alluding to a punch against this piece of shit who said this within hours of a terrorist attack that killed several people:

I'd happily punch him in the face until his nose looked like a dried cranberry.

Warren Ellis sums up my position/feelings on the subject perfectly

I agree, and I'm honestly surprised that others take issue with it. I'm not sure what they teach in schools these days, or how sanitized their lessons on the Nazi are, but like, really? Doing the "maybe both sides are bad" thing with Nazi? What

Listening to Richard Spencer crying about getting punched in his latest youtube video just makes this speech even better, and proves if you really want to get through to a Nazi, crack em upside the fucking dome. Piece of shit deserves every punch he gets.

He deserves 1000x punches to the face for insulting the victims of the Quebec city mosque shooting.

This fucker straight up wants people to die but doesn't have the balls to stand and bang when he gets hit.

These people are always the biggest cowards.

Great speech, very well put. Tho, could've done without the advocacy of voilence. All it takes is one punch to kill or seriously injury a person, and the perpetrator of that voilence (morally justified or not) to be put up on manslaughter charges and their and their family's lives ruined.

Know where he's coming from, but it ain't right.

FUCK THIS SHIT.

This is one of latest tweets from the sub-human nazi scum who took a punch.

Punch the fucking Nazis. A punch is nothing compared to what they believe should be done to the minorities in this country.

Oh God. The "accused Nazi victimhood" of Nazi-like neo-fascist supporters is gaining steam.

My response at the bottom.

The lack of a decent education in America has created this monster. People do not know what Hitler did or how neo-Nazism would rise again.

Nothing to do with lack of education. They are just TROLLING people with their insane beliefs. Some nazi education won't change anything. They don't want education they want to HATE

It's kinda like when someone shoots up a school and every blames mental illness. Sure it may be true. But it could also be true that people can just be that fucked up. It's the reason why slavery was a thing and racism is still a thing

People are that fucked up.

I think blaming education is a misnomer, because there are some very smart people on the side of evil here. I think we need to realise that actually, some things and some people really are just wrong and it's not due to a lack of education - people make these choices.

Some may just be trolls, but they have been more public and aggressive recently.

Can we start a system to track this dude so he can get punched wherever he goes?

I thought Winona was a bit much in Stranger Things, turns out she wasn't even acting.

Also great speech.

Watching this (over and over) is the best I've felt in the past 10 days. Such a powerful and motivating speech.

We're gonna make it through this. We won't let hate win in this world.

I don't know, great message but Winona's face ruined this for me.

Try listening to it in another tab, that's what I've been doing.

I fucking love David Harbour. This speech was incredible and and I was so hype after watching it (I'm still hype from it tbh).

I saw that.

I was like "Uuuuhh". I couldn't get a read on her feelings in the matter lmao

Ah, she's cute. I got the impression she was a wee bit drunk, didn't know Harbour was going to talk about what he did, and got into it as he was going.

Not sure why people are fixating on it.

I don't see why conflating "all speech is equal" with "i'm uncomfortable with punching as a reaction to it".
I mean my personal opinion is, if you're a neo-nazi spouting Nazi trash, you should expect a punch in the face, but i can understand why someone wouldn't be comfortable with that type of outcome WHILE thinking that no, not all speech is equal.
Like, a shit-filled diaper to the face would still imply that not all speech is equal, but wouldn't be as violent.
Though as i said i understand the sentiment behind that punch, which is why i'm personally not too bothered by it
and i can't deny a certain satisfaction in seeing the video, but that's beyond the point.

People are fixating on it because she goes through like 100 different facial expressions in like 3 minutes time.

I mean, personally I'm okay with throwing literal shit at Nazis. It complements the shit coming out of their mouths so well. And getting shitbombed would be very humiliating and demoralizing. I'm all for it. There should even be an International Shit On a Nazi day for it. I'm not even joking.

If you don't feel comfortable punching Dick in his hate hole, that's cool. All you have to do is move over; there's a huge line behind you waiting to do so. Personally, I do think to condemn someone for punching a Nazi (not a Trump supporter; a Nazi) and then defending Dick's right to spout the hateful shit he does, is a problem (not saying that's what you're doing btw :D).

Dick wants to be engaged in reasonable debate. To debate him is to lose. It normalises his ideology and gives him a platform to put his message in the mainstream and reach others like him; to make them feel like it's normal too. We can't support that.

Dick's filthy ideology (not 'opinion', not 'political view', filthy fucking ideology), where the endgame is extermination, does not deserve being entertained. We know how that ends. Undermining the message seems to be the only effective way to combat it without getting caught in the engagement trap. I genuinely can't think of anything in recent times that has been nearly as effective in shutting Dick down than that punch in the mouth on National TV.

She was great for how the character was written.

Her over the top craziness is probably why no one really believes her for a while.
