I'm excited that despite how much I've been anticipating this game, I actually have no idea how it plays or what your goals are other than survival and exploration. Like, I don't know if there is a story or a save system or upgrades or anything. Feels kind of nice to not know.

I've always heard about this games AI (was brought up in a lot of Last Guardian threads) but this is the first time I've actually watched a trailer.

Day one.

Thanks to MB's threads it's been on my radar for years and for £12 worth a pre-order!( Also put me over £50 spend for the month so I'll pick up Nier next month with £10 off)

For any others who (slacker-)backed for alpha/beta access, I e-mailed the devs a few days ago asking if we'd receive a pre-release Steam key, as the beta never came, but was ignored.

Considering they're being published by Adult Swim, that all falls under Adult Swim's purview now. From what I recall from the devlog, once they got picked up by Adult Swim, the focus shifted to private QA/beta testing.

Sure, I can understand that, but I shouldn't have to infer "It's out of our hands" from inertia and silence. I mean, I'm far from mad as, to be perfectly honest, until the release date was announced I'd actually forgotten that I'd slacker-backed the game, however the situation does leave a bit of a sour taste and is something that will inform my purchase decision should the devs offer premium tiers for their next title.

Looks quite cool. Nidhogg was the only 2d game on my radar (even though it is already out). This might be added as well.

Does this have co-op at launch or is that coming later?
Devs say multiplayer's coming in a post-release update, since they're still balancing. It's not just co-op; they're also doing competitve and wave survival modes, as well as other modes and aspects that unlock as you progress through the campaign

I notice preorder is up on PSN but not on Steam. My dollars keep getting sucked into my PC vents but getting stuck! Please help!

Thank you!

Steam preorder is up. Same discount as PSN ($15.99)

I'm a bit confused...the official website says this is releasing for Mac, but on Steam there's only a Windows version. I may have to end up purchasing for PS4. Is this digital-only or is there a physical version?

I'm pleasantly surprised at the price. I hope they can make back their money with the amount of work they've put into it.

I'll put other games I'm playing on the back burner because I've been waiting for this for too long! This has potential to be incredible. No wonder Fumito Ueda is hyped.

Part of why I'm glad they're part of that Sony promotion. From what I've played of some older builds, I do feel some aspects will probably be divisive, mainly the time pressure of the rain and lack of handholding

Back then at least. The builds I played didn't have any story, set pieces, tutorials, or progression

It's funny, I'm basically buying because of the advanced AI and the aesthetic, and know very little about the overall mechanics other than the moment-to-moment loop. I think they've created an amazing trailer, but it also could give people the wrong impression.

Since you were part of the KS, were there Mac builds available? Or is this going to end up as a disappointing "kick the port to someone else after we're done" situation? I can't find any info about it, other than the original release date which had Windows and Mac releasing simultaneously.

Well if the artwork and animation is this good, I suppose I can preorder it. :D

Nope. The alpha is Windows-only, but it also hasn't been updated since March 5th/May 3rd, 2015 (depending on the date format Humble uses).

Edit: Even the game's beta/dev Steam subs don't have a Mac depot, so, yeah, a Mac version likely doesn't yet exist.

Huh. I think as a Mac user I would've felt a bit pissed if I had been a backer, as the original pitch was for a PC & Mac release, with PS4 and Linux being additional platforms.

I guess I'll wait to find out what's going on, as the PS4 version is I think running at a lower framerate / res?

Just asked the devs. They said they had to focus on PC and PS4 for launch (only one programmer), so Mac, multiplayer, etc. will come after launch

Do we know that the framerate will be on PS4? Have the devs mentioned targeting 60?
PS4 is "fairly locked at 60"

i dont like the graffiti to be honest, takes away from an otherwise otherwordly and mysterious setting

That's actually been a common thing for the game all along. Seems like the dev really wanted to work it in somehow, but it just didn't really fit. Lots of negative feedback about the original title image, for example.

I suppose there's a cipher here. Wonder if people have decoded it yet.

Yeah, graffiti and old-school cartoons were things that influenced the game from the beginning. For example, the devs tried to make the combat and killing not too violent, but a more cute/cartoony vibe
One of the main influences to Rain World's aesthetic has always been graffiti, believe it or not. In a way the game is set in a graffiti drawing, or in a graffiti world. It's the same kind of urban, abandoned areas, and if you take a look at the "plants" they're rather graffiti ornaments than plants as we know them. The lizards are very inspired by this aesthetic.

My other main source of inspiration is, once again believe it or not, early 20'th century cartoons, like this stuff:

steamboat-willie.jpg
I guess what I like about graffiti is the contrast. It's loud, whacky, colorful and cartoony, but where the goofy voices stop there's an echo, a vast sense of abandonment. Because where all this wackiness takes place is some kind of no longer used industrial area, and at the feet of the cartoon character a little spruce is growing, year by year, and a plastic bag is slowly decomposing. Nature is cold and lonely, but never as cold and lonely as when compared to the meaningless chatter of our culture. There's no feeling of abandonment and godlessness as when you see pop culture next to a spruce growing, and understand that whatever we say and do, the universe doesn't even care

Thanks for asking. That really disappointing. It makes financial sense to focus on PS4 first, but still frustrating.
More on why Windows first, from the devlog
Shaders, bro! While we are using unity as a rendering pipeline, the engine and everything else is 100% custom, and moving that from DX11 to OpenGL is still a time consuming process, especially since Rain World has hundreds of custom shaders and textures that will need to be fitted.

It's just Joar doing the programming, so launching on 4 OSs simultaneously was impossible. But once we have the PC/PS4 versions launched, we'll be able to turn our attentions to other versions and give them the attention they deserve!
It should be noted that when they launched the Kickstarter and put together the tiers, the game was built in Lingo and wasn't expected to be expanded and rebuilt in another engine

Wow, the intro's really similar to the alpha. Looks like they were already mostly done and have just been adding content since then. It'll be fun to see what's in those thousand or so new screens they added.
