Bloomberg: Apple Watch 3 w/LTE this year

Apple Inc. is planning to release a version of its smartwatch later this year that can connect directly to cellular networks, a move designed to reduce the device’s reliance on the iPhone, people familiar with the matter said.

Currently, Apple requires its smartwatch to be connected wirelessly to an iPhone to stream music, download directions in maps, and send messages while on the go. Equipped with LTE chips, at least some new Apple Watch models, planned for release by the end of the year, will be able to conduct many tasks without an iPhone in range, the people said. For example, a user would be able to download new songs and use apps and leave their smartphone at home.

It will be interesting to see how the battery is on that thing.

It may be hard to overstate how big a deal it is, but Gruber is pretty fucking good at overstating how big a deal Apple things will be.

Agreed. There are other smart watches that already connect to LTE. It's nothing revolutionary.

I actually don't even really want it. Happy enough with my Apple Watch being connected to my phone only.

All ask for is a smartwatch as big as my Invicta watches.

This is why I really hope Lenovo's flexible wristband phone becomes a reality.

Hope, Apple uses the dial circle interface like Samsung Gear S3. If not, I would be very tempted to go iPhone 8 + Gear S4.

I've known this for months. Also "heard" that it will pair with an app on your phone, possibly the Apple Watch app (just for the initial setup/connection). It will also work with one phone number between your phone and watch. And it will be an eSIM.

Not all carriers will support it right at launch because of the investment required to make it work the way apple wants and the notice given but carriers have known for quite a while to prepare for it...but still not enough notice for some.

Anyway, yeah. Guess we'll see.

Embedded Sim that borrows your phone’s phone number is exactly what I wanted and expected. I wonder if companies like AT&T will still charge for the extra device

Why would you spend that much?

Because I want to black ceramic Apple Watch with cellular and the black link band. I think the white ceramic watch looks drop dead gorgeous, it’s just the wrong color

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
Man Apple is going to have insane holiday quarter
3 new iPhone models and a Watch 3
not to mention one of the iPhone model (Anniversary edition) is the most anticipated product in a while

the question remains will it cost extra monthly.

most definitely will unless a carrier wants to get super generous. It will be the same as how tablets work now with sims. an extra 5 or 10 on your monthly bill. But you never know which carrier might disrupt and let you share data for free between all your eSIM devices in the future.

Right now the iPad has an embedded invited Sim but doesn’t share your iPhone’s phone number, it gets its own phone number from the carrier. You’re saying it won’t be like this, correct?

Ever since I got one I've always felt like the future would be to not bring my phone with me as much. Can't wait to get this.

The only thing I want to be able to do without my phone is use Apple Pay.

The watch has limited uses for me. Apple Pay, Siri to send texts and set reminders, and a more convenient way to check the most recent messages you received without taking the phone out of your pocket. The health stuff is a nice bonus but it is not why I got my watch.

I guess this is a big deal if you want to listen to music on your watch without your phone when you are exercising.

So are you going to need another SIM card and a second data plan? No thanks.

A round screen is terrible for the display of text and other such info. We're just simply used to watches being round because that's how they've always been. Apple's going to stick with the square face, as they should.

3G/LTE can be useful, but not at the expense of not having the basics. If you can't have a persistent screen and barely a day of battery life then this is useless fluff that needs to be turned off.

You can use Apple Pay without your phone right now

yes sir. And I've known it quite a while I just never bothered saying anything because it would be too obvious where it's from but now that more people are in the know for things it's probably fine. But yeah apple definitely wants to make sure the same number is on all your devices.

And I'm pretty sure it's that functionality specifically for why it won't be on all carriers worldwide at launch or whatever. Requires a lot of back end development/setup which carries a decent cost if you don't have the infrastructure in place. I'm assuming the race to support this is now on between all the carriers.

Yeah, who doesn’t love reading text on a circular screen. So easy on the eyes, so natural, so much screen space.

The fall keynote will be stacked to no end if this all turns out to be true.
7S/Plus
iPhone X/DE
Series 3/LTE Watch/diabetics smart band?
HomePod?
iMac Pro?

Definitely excited for the new form factor but mostly because they must’ve made major breakthroughs since the Watch is already stacked internally. Add LTE capabilities without killing the battery and then make it slimmer (only new form factor that makes sense to me)? Huh hoh

Download. A song.

This ain't 2010... They better have a Spotify app.

Battery tech has barely evolved since 2010, streaming music on LTE would be the dumbest use of battery life possible.

But I do agree that it should be an option, as dumb as it is.

You’re saying this functionality could be expanded to iPads in the future?

Likely no HomePod or iMac pro since they’ve already been introduced but don’t release until December. I’m guessing the three iPhones, the new watch, and the 4K Apple TV. I’m predicting no October event this year so September is gonna be stacked

I feel like if you are reading any more than about 10 words, you've gone outside a smart watch's bailiwick.

yup, pretty sure it's the future for all devices including android stuff. Apple is just the first to force it down carriers throats here.

Now whether carriers fuck with it or not is another story but I know apple has told them that this is how it's going to work so get on board when ya can.

Fascinating. So here’s a question, aside from just the convenience of not having separate phone lines for each of your devices, is there any other tangible advantage? iOS Already has a system with Wi-Fi calling for getting your calls and all your devices, even if they have those different phone numbers
