Epic’s stunning new Unreal demos show off high-end ray tracing and photorealism

To have realistic physics, polygon models will not work. You need to imitate reality - objects made out of particles. Like advanced fluid physics are being made.
Eh, that's not true.

You use particles for water but not say, an entire car. And technically, polygons are already used. Usually every object has its own "collision mesh" which as its name implies, helps detect collision between 1 or more objects.

First one is very impressive. Troll looks about expected for a tech demo.

Things is, uncanny valley is a very difficult problem for simulating humans whether it's in body features or animation/movement.
We'll surpass it in the next 5-10 years. Not only that, but the simulated human will be you, in VR:

First one looks more impressive because it features scenes that are easier to render well

Tech demo is one thing. Real-time on consumer hardware is another. Don't waste my time with bullcrap.
Sure, it's not consumer hardware, but it's building up to consumer hardware. Real-time demos have been done with journalists using this tech, and it was extremely convincing, albiet not over the uncanny valley yet.

To quote Wired: "Nope. Sheikh's avatar doesn't have the beard or owlishly round glasses he wears in real life (ostensibly they're harder to get right, so he did the capture without them), but it's him. It's him so much that when he invites me to lean in and take a closer look at the stubble on his face, it feels incredibly invasive to do so. It's so much Steve Lombardi that, when he later walks into the room for real, I feel like I already know him—despite never having met him in the flesh."

It's pretty easy to imagine this beyond the uncanny valley within 5 years in research, and within 10 years for consumers. Computer vision is at the heart of the issue, and it's a field that's advancing very rapidly with plenty of breakthroughs.

Fucks sake... I thought you meant UNREAL demo, as in, a new Unreal... Now I have an erection and have to go look at pictures of Trump just to get rid of it...

This is what their demo UE4 demo from 2013 looked like.

And you can watch it here.

Do you think any Xbox One X and PS4 games have this quality now that you can think of? Any games over the last 5 years?

Absolutely not!

The first one was impressive AF even though pre-rendered. The second is completely unimpressive for a movie but it's interesting if it was solely produced in UE4.

Can't wait for it to start being possible in 10-15 years from now.

I think about this a lot -- a completely particle-based game engine. And it exists already:

Or the next best thing - Frostbite engine. Because of course I'm not expecting massively realistic destruction or physics, just more than whats under this superficial shit which is the same thing we've been getting since 2009 but just more photo realistic.

UE is notorious imo in being very dated in this respect.

I didn't find either overly impressive to be truthful. The first one may as well have been photogrammetry given how static the scenes were, whilst the second showed some advanced lighting and shading tech, but the character was still deep in uncanny valley.

Personally I found the new Unity demo "The Heretic" far more impressive.

Having just finished watching Love Death and Robots, this is like, totally meh. Lol. But for real time I guess it's nice. Rendering believable rocky landscapes and concrete buildings aren't exactly great challenges anymore though.

I don't see what's so impressive in these videos....I made sure I watched them several times too....I've seen more impressive visuals in games this gen. So naturally, next gen will blow these graphics out of the water....and by extension this gen's visuals as well....

The 1st one looks insane.

The second looks amazing as well but not as impressive.

Don’t see games approaching that fidelity this gen. The “kite demo” still looks better that anything I’ve seen this gen and that’s a couple of years old.

I'm embarassing myself. I didn't play that either. I have a PS4, but I got it for games like bloodborne and God of War. I literally chose Demon's Souls over Uncharted 2 on PS3 when they released same day...Maybe I should check these out.

I found the videos incredible. But I don't know if I am a good judge because almost everything is incredible to me. Playing DMCV right now on PC, and I'm always thinking about how good it looks when I'm not focusing in battling demons. Mckmas8808 Uncharted 4 screens are very beautiful to me too.

Perhaps it is because I play a lot of retro games but I'm way beyond satisfied with graphics.

All I see is lots of DOF, lots of bur....Texture work is not that impressive from what I've seen before......I think a new wipeout will absolutely destroy this graphically on next gen systems.........Even now, I don't know if it's the youtube compression, but the image looks really blurry overall to me, which explains some of the aliased edges that you see from lower resolutions.....Texture work don't stand out, backgrounds and foregrounds don't look revolutionary........I'd say Death Stranding is more impressive than this visually....especially if you're looking at terrain...

The second looks amazing as well but not as impressive.
This looks even worse to me, the model is not impressive, the whole video looks like a low rez prerender cutscene that I've seen before....I don't know, I'm just more impresed by in-game visuals these days, these renders look so odd.....Animation looks poor in comaprison to what I've seen before in current games....This does not look better than LOU2 in so many ways......

I was really impressed by the kite demo back when it was shown, but I'm not as impressed by it anymore, I think current gen games look pretty close to the kite demo and what it showed......Terrain, textures, open world games etc.......If you want to say what games measure up well to the Kite demo, I'd say Ghost Recon and even Far Cry 5.....

On repeated viewing, neither is very impressive. Same shit we've been fed for years with zero advancement in things that would improve gameplay experience like physics or AI.

The High-end ray tracing and photorealism will be exclusive to the Epic Store

I was sad today because I finished the last episode of Love, Death, and Robots.

These videos helped a little.
I finished it yesterday. Sooo goood. Some of the shorts should be remaked for games or tv series. But back on topic. I think its exacly what you can expect from Decima next gen. Death Stranding looks scarry close to this anyway.

Environment demo had a lovely fog which scatters/blurs the view.
This is very important to get the feeling of fog right instead of looking like a gradient toward the gray we have seen all too often.

Both demos were amazing in terms of asset quality and rendering.

Epic also showed quite impressive destruction tools for UE.
Couldn't find the demonstration, but here is small video.

I was so skeptical when opening this thread.
THen my jaw dropped.
And then I've checked this post with Unreal demo from 2013 and toned done the expectations.

i must admit that looks impressive but who knows how far away those kind of visuals are for games.

also fuck epic. it's such a shame that such a shitty company has control over so many games.

Check your eyes. Some of these could easily pass for reals photographs.
Reminds me of Landmannalaugar and Lakagigar.
Sometimes there's some blur you see to texturework in UE4, almost like a lod issue, just go back and watch some of the UE demos we saw back when these consoles launched, they're not as impressive anymore....based on what some shipped games have shown.....

I think this looks better.....Have you seen foliage, the texturework and effects in that game...?

I expect this to be demo'd at PS5's reveal, just like they did with PS4/Pro...getting the first demo in.

Mate, this was already shown at the PS1 reveal.

You need to get your expectations up further. Especially if you're willing to spend £100 on a HDMI cable..trust me you'll get better than this.

Neither are part of a graphic engine like Unreal Engine.

You implement physics and AI using others engines.

Yes I know but I don't understand every time these are shown people react 'wow games will be so great to play in the future' when better textures and effects adds very very little to what we already have today, which is great graphics and effects.

A leap in gameplay experience will occur with advanced physics and AI.

This looks great but this has nothing to do with the level of details we can see here:
c8e62b5c-5a53-40ae-9a07-a2d3a2982afd-original.png

Compare the details on the ground, the variety of textures, the shading of the boulders, the quality of the focus blur.
The Death Stranding screenshot is great by today's standards, but almost nothing feels photo-realistic.

They have always had amazing demos... Did they give up making games? Serious question.
If you mean the demos ended up showing off actual next gen graphics: the UE3 Samaritan demo matched with batman arkham knight graphics... And it was open world too.

Gears 4 in 4K comes closest this gen of everything I've played so far, Gears 5 on the One X will be interesting but still the same engine underneath and probably the closest we will get to that style and look. But if we're even as close to the first video as Gears is to that one in 6 years time I'll be amazed. People just need to go back and watch the original 1942 and Farcry trailers for what we thought was absolutle brilliant and life life 10 years ago. I can't believe some people aren't blown away by how far we've come even if its just tech demos at the moment, we'll get there eventually guys.
