What really gets me, is that it isn't "blackface".
Blackface specifically refers to the panstick make-up adopted by performers in the 19th century dolng minstrel shows and the like. Even though it was arguably as celebrative as caricaturish (it was a popular form of entertainment in those less enlightened times), its pretty much inarguable at this point as to why persons of color would find it offensive. It references a particularly grim time for Black people in America in an unbefittingly jovial manner.
That is not the case regarding this cosplay. Its referencing a fucking video game character, one of the traits of which is his skin color. Noone is being mocked or exploited intentionally or otherwise, that the cosplayer is representing a character of a different race is no more relevant than that character being of a different sex. Its a tribute, the depth of which is indicated by the extremity of transformation involved in recreating them.
In short, there is nothing intrinsically negative about the portrayal. Its literally a case of people enacting an effective color bar. It is racism implemented in the name of anti-racism, it is morally and rationally bankrupt.

Even just for looking at how outrage is whipped up and then maintained.
Hundreds of posts in and people still talking as if she "painted" her skin black when actually she is wearing a suit.
This fact is at the core of why some are saying "but this isn't blackface though".
Others are flat out ignoring that fact so they can continue to rant about "painting skin".
I mean looking at the cosplay you'd never even know it was a woman under all that and you for sure wouldn't know it's a white woman.
When you factor in the fact that this is a fictional character, and also not done in any kind of mocking or stereotyping way, I don't really get where the outrage comes from.
Once they've decided "yes this is an egregious act of racism" then no dissenting opinion is allowed. Even when basic common sense tells you that this is not really a big deal.

If your first reaction is "OMG she is dressing like a black guy" then that's a bit of a eyebrow raiser for me because the character looks like some kind of demon or monster or something. Put it this way, she isn't dressing like your colleague from work or the guy presenting the news or whatever. She's dressed up as some fantasy demon that came back from the ocean depths to murder people... so how do we jump from that to "she's dressed like a black guy"?

Thats the thing though, she didn't. She is wearing a full body suit to transform her appearance completely. Which by any rational standard is a completely different thing, as the racial aspect is just one component of many things being cosplayed.
If people are "outraged" and "offended" having seen the lengths taken in creating this characterization, they are being blatantly dishonest. If not, and are reacting based on hearsay then that's just foolishness.
The point is this, and its real simple. There HAS to be a real, arguable, reason as to why something is offensive, otherwise its just unthinking prejudice.
I can get why white people should be discouraged from using the term "n*gger", even if its not used as a slur or with any harmful intent, the history of its use by whites against blacks gives it a sort of latent power. The idea of the black community reclaiming the word for their own use is empowerment, and I'm totally down with that (as if my self censorship in this example didnt give the game away!)
Blackface is not the same, because having dark skin is not a slur. Its not a BAD thing, it just a trait of people who's genetic heritage belongs to certain geographical regions. Hell, the concept of "blackness" is a relatively recent invention, and that's kind of the crux of the matter.
Without the crucial connective logic of "blackface" as a 19th century theatrical tradition and its connection to reconstruction era American history, and the "Jim Crow" laws left in its wake, what's left is a belief that changing the complexion of one's skin is a moral sin in itself. In a strange inversion of the pattern of historical prejudice, "whiteness". having white skin is like the mark of cain, its a marker of shame that cannot be covered.
Its a weird, essentialist viewpoint that is utterly divisive. Its bizarrely antithetical to the idea of unity and togetherness of all human beings and is the absolute opposite of what I'd consider to fall under the umbrella of liberal or progressive politics.
Sorry, long post, but to sum up it seems to me that to be inflamed over this you need to have literally forgotten, or be oblivious to, the reasons why its supposed to be bad. Its mindless, reactionary and above all else performative. It's basically acting based on the logic that "its just the way it is"... and yeah I;m thinking of that God awful (but curiously apposite in this circumstance) Bruce Hornsby song as I'm writing this!

The saddest thing is that all of this "defending" of the new Star Wars is all because they cast a woman in the role of Rey.
If Rey had been played by a dude then I am fairly confident that a lot of these "defenders" would fully agree with the criticisms.
Rey is simply not a well developed character and one of the major problems with the character is indeed related to their "power level".
There's no real conflict and therefore no real drama with this character.
The character is a woman though so we have to play white knight for some reason?
At the end of the day a lot of people didn't like The Last Jedi and so many of their complaints seem perfectly valid.
While others may be less valid it does not change the fact that the movie got a very mixed to negative reception.
