NPD November 2011 Sales Results [Update 7: Skyrim, CoD Wii, PC Retail Sales Up 57%]

At the end of 2010, Wii had a 8.7M lead on the 360 in the US

LTD (from the Dec 2010 NPD thread)

Wii 34,154,281
360 25,395,075
PS3 15,462,196

At the end of November 2011, the 360 gained around 2M+ on the Wii. Leaving a difference of 6.77

LTD (from this thread)

WII: 37.75M
360: 30.98M
PS3: 19.05M

IF Nov sales double in Dec, we end up at the end of 2011 with:

WII: 39.45M
360: 34.3M
PS3: 20.85M

Now Wii has a lead of 5.15. I think Wii might do better in Dec and the lead will end up closer to just under 6.

IF general sales trends continue (a big IF with new consoles coming out), 360 will surpass wii before the 2013 holiday season ends.

I think the main problem Skyward Sword sales will have in the future is the introduction of Wii U, and the death of Wii. In order to get near Twilight Princess level sales of 6-7 million would it be a good idea to have an HD version of Skyward Sword for Wii U? It will still control with wii motion plus, not the new controller.

For Rayman they should have offered exclusivity to one of the console makers in exchange for help with marketing. Nintendo or Microsoft seems like the two good choices, probably Nintendo because they need exclusives and this kind of game matches up with their audience.

That's a bit misleading though, Nintendo DS is an established brand in 2011, which wasn't the case in 04-05. The sales for the 3DS are fine, but I don't see them ramping up the same way they did with the DS, I don't think the 3DS will ever sell 3 million in a month.

You might also say that now we also have a different economic situation (worse) so it would be harder to sell more.

You may consider that you could have said that about the DS in its first year.

i dont think marketing was the problem

In hardcore gaming there is definitely a trend towards these big blockbuster type games and this NPD shows that it is getting stronger. More and more resources are going to be going towards making these even bigger and better as next generation rolls around.

:(

Rayman seems to be having the same problem as Child of Eden. It should have been priced at $15-20 and been available as digital downloads (through XBLA & PSN) day one. But, Ubisoft is determined to stick to their $60 price point.

iOS port comes after Ubisoft attempts to scam Vita, and 3DS owners with a $40 port early next year.

Didn't it say somewhere that Sonic Generations was 26th ? I'd say it didn't do too well if that's true.

26 with all SKUs separate, or 26 with all SKUs combined? If it's separate then that's not bad. Heck, even if it's combined, given this is November, SG's likely above 100k.

This is a good thing. I can only imagine how amazing Uncharted 4 will be on PS4. My mind might not be able to fathom such awesomeness.

Well I mean I guess it sucks for low budget game fans.

How did DKCR sell a boat load but Rayman doesn't on more platforms? DKCR came out around this time.

Of course DK is a bigger brand, but that is a staggeringly low number.

At least I'll be able to pick it up at bomba price soon.

Define great? Wii hasn't had a December under 2M since the supply constrained days of 2007. Dec 2009 was close to 4M. I think anything less than 2M will not be considered a good result. Especially since the other consoles are prepped to have record or near record months.

well if we don't consider under 2MIL a great result then it's obvious it won't. But with Mario&Luigi at the Olympics and Mario Kart bundles which will definitely get a price slash I can see a considerable amount of Wii sold this month

Sadly, this is true.

It's either AAA or don't even show up, and it will be even more apparent next generation with higher production values.

Nah, these companies simply need to realize that if your title isn't top tier don't release in Q4.

Your stuff is going to get lost in the shuffle. It's much easier for non hyped titles to stand out at other times of the year.

Everyone thinks they can get that holiday cash, though.

Cause it's on like Donkey Kong.

I mean, it is more bombastic and blatant, less cute; he is the James Bond of platformers, shameless fun

I forgot...why don't we get all the numbers again?

forgot why they stopped doing that....and the combined sales too is bummer

is the 360 really poised to catch up to the wii?

It's a popular Nintendo franchise starring a popular Nintendo mascot on a Nintendo platform. Also, it's really awesome (not that Rayman isn't). Games like that tend to transcend "bad release schedule" fast becoming holiday hits.

I think DKCR had much less competition then Rayman Origins, plus a far bigger brand name.

Yeah, this is what Rayman had to compete with just within the platformer genre:

Wii - Kirby: Return to Dreamland
PS3 - Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One
PS3/360 - Sonic Generations

DKCR didn't have a single other platformer to compete with last fall on Wii.

Maybe, some people have guessed they may match by holiday's end 2013, but by then Wii U will have been out so who knows what that really means.

Rayman came out the same day AC did in a far more packed holiday season with no advertising and people generally have more nostalgia for DKC than they do Rayman.

Those games all added up together haven't and probably won't sell even 20% of DKCR (bar maybe Kirby's leg), competition with other platformers definitely has not been the problem.

Rayman deserved to die. $20 game at best. I'm wondering if Microsoft is prepared stock wise to sell 2m+ this month. Have they mentioned anything about ramping up supply for the holidays?

Des0lar

will learn eventually
Completely mispriced. Should have been XBLA/PSN/Steam at $15, same price as Super Meat Boy.

Yep, Steam front page and a 20-25$ price tag would have sold me on this game day1.
But knowing Ubisoft this will never happen. At least this time they can't scream: "Nobody bought our game because of the bloody pirates!!!"

Uh, you mean besides Kirby's Epic Yarn, Sonic Colors, Epic Mickey and Mario All-Stars, right? ;)

Unfortunate for Rayman.

I haven't bought it yet due to too much shit coming out this holiday. I really want it, but I want other stuff more.
