It does when the steakhouse's business plan relied on the sales volume of the fast food place.
$1 price tags across the board are no more the solution than $60 price tags across the board. downloadable titles on all systems are blurring these lines. you don't see PSN, XBLA, 3DS store etc etc sales in these NPD figures yet, but the 3DS has it's fantastic $5 titles too. the Vita will get them too even if it hasn't already.

if you guys counted PC games the same way you count iOS games you'd probably be drawing the conclusion that home consoles were dead too.

that's probably where we'll end up with portables. there mightn't be a 3DS running it's own OS, but there will be a piece of hardware designed for the gamer with a nice game launching front end.

there won't ever JUST be general purpose smartphones and tablets.

You think the new service focused Microsoft is going to be that generous on the next Xbox?

No clue. They are service focused on the 360 because the generation is over and there will be no more games made so they have to do something to keep it selling after the new system comes out.

Vita numbers are bad but I'm more stunned at the 3DS numbers. I'd figure it'd have a larger percentage of that shrinking handheld pie given all the advantages it has over the Vita.

Does that chart work if you assume Wii is this gen's leading console, replacing the PS2, or is it based on 360/PS3 being this gen's PS2?

Nintendo definitely wasn't responsible for all of the handheld growth, since they had 100% of the market the generation before.

If you subtract GBA sales last gen from DS sales this generation, PSP was responsible for at least 40% of the total handheld market growth this generation (worldwide. Less in the US). Nintendo went from a 100% share last generation to a 70% share this generation while doubling their hardware and software sales over the GBA. Handheld growth this generation was nuts.
Notice the title of the chart "2007-2008 Video Game Industry Revenue Growth." Wasn't the PSP already pretty much dead/stagnating in the US in 2007? In any case, I don't think it was experiencing growth anymore by that point.

Or because there's more money in services than games. Xbox has always been about getting MS in the living room, but you need more than software to fo that these days.

The most surprising thing to me is the 3DS. It's shocking to see it still kind of struggling.

I'm curious if Mario Kart/3D Land are bubbling in the 11-20 range like so many DS games did or not.

I laugh every time someone on GAF claims new consoles right now would fix this situation rather than over saturating the market with more expensive machines making it collapse on itself.

Yep and games like Plants vs Zombies and Angry Birds are selling great on the mobile platform that more people seem to be choosing.

No, the idea is that the 3DS will be fine because Nintendo has a catalog of games that will sustain the platform by itself if need be.

Sony and Nintendo have a huge uphill battle in the west when it comes to handhelds.

Apple is taking a massive chunk of the market Nintendo used to dominate with the DS.

Nintendo will continue to do well in Japan, but the 3DS will probably continue to struggle regardless of how good the software is. People have just moved on to ipads and smartphones to get that sort of fix.

Nintendo and Sony will need to embrace the mobile phone market or they will continue to languish with their handhelds.

It's not unhackable. It's just not worth hacking.

Macs have no viruses!!

iOS/Android is making $40 portable games a non-starter for many. Why spend $40 on a hh game when you can get a $1-$5 game that gives you just as much enjoyment?

Portable games are up to $50 now... then you have to buy a memory card too in order for them to boot on the system.

Or because there's more money in services than games. Xbox has always been about getting MS in the living room, but you need more than software to fo that these days.

The only thing to know for sure is for MS to launch the next system. It's easy to concentrate on stupid shit like this at the end of the gen. At the beginning of the gen it's all about the games.

Tablets and Smartphones have changed the portable market, Nintendo and Sony are clinging to the past

I wonder if the 1.2M copies of Diablo 3 that Blizzard is giving away to their WoW annual pass subscribers worldwide will hurt first month sales for the game. If about half of those were from North America, that's 500-600k copies of Diablo 3 that won't be on the May NPD results. What did Starcraft 2 sell first month in the US?

721 k but it wasnt mentioned in the charts

I got grudge sucked!
Awesome that the Witcher 2 charted, especially since it wasn't promoted at all. Too bad the overall sales were down. Still, some of us console peasants like good games.

Yeah, the 3DS and PSV doing bad is definitely telling. 3DS moreso. After the huge push that Nintendo did last year, the platform still isn't doing extremely well. Better than the PSV, of course, but the western sales haven't been doing as well as it's doing in Japan. I guess the way handhelds are viewed in the west isn't really helping the situation.

It's been a few months now without any compelling software releases. Seems natural as they have lacked that Brain Age/Nintendogs casual gaming hit...

I'm not trying to shit on the 360 or Kinect here but it hasn't escaped my notice that when the Wii was the #1 selling console every month in the NPD the VG market was healthy and growing yet since the 360 has taken over that spot the market has been in shambles.

MS should be proud of how they turned things around in the US but I'm really curious about the make up of new 360 owners. The market clearly is not growing right now so it's hard for me to imaging that Kinect is drawing in new gamers who felt left out of the Wii craze.

If that's true then what's the explaination for MS having this incredible resurgence for the 360 and a really successful peripheral in Kinect while at the same time the US market seems to spiralling into a chasm?

Sorry, DS seems better than Vita.

Thank you kindly.

I was going to say that Nintendo needs to kill off DS to help out the 3DS but then I realized that they make money off of it so they might as well ride the train a bit longer. They can always kill it after Pokémon.

The graph is a pie chart of the U.S. videogame industry's revenue growth from 2007 to 2008. The graph is also rather misleading (and quite hilarious). Here are some better ones.

Basically, from 2007 to 2008, the revenue from Nintendo platforms increased by ~$3.3 billion, and the revenue from all platforms increased by ~$3.4 billion. Hence being responsible for 99% of the growth! Ta-da!

PSP < ? < Vita < Wii < ? < 3DS < 150k < PS3 < 200k < 360

I believe you guys could figure out what is '?' stand for.

Wow. Vita less than 100K. I figured a steep decline was coming, but held fast to the idea that it would float above that benchmark. That'll teach me to be optimistic.

Also surprised at the 3DS placement, though it explains fully why Nintendo decided to plead the Fifth this evening. Pegged it at less than 200K, but not sub-150K. Nintendo may be drawing OK with 3DS in Japan, but it's clearly stalling in this territory so far in 2012.

Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

Is there though? I mean I understand they make a killing on Live but that's been for almost the whole life of Xbox in general (2002 I think?). I don't know though ... what do they make off Netflix, HBO GO, Hulu+, or Youtube? Or the ESPN channels? Do they really make more on that then their licensing and cut for games and XBLA? Zune I could see but most of the services they add don't seem to be big money makers for them and more of a checkbox for buying the system in the first place.

The shrinking handheld market won't be able to accommodate two pieces of expensive hardware this round. Vita won't be making any recovery, which is a shame given how impressive the hardware is. Software weaknesses as a multipurpose device were enough to kill it for me though, as I'm sure is the case for many others. I have no doubt that the rise of ubiquitous mobile internet access and powerful, multipurpose smartphones has pulled Vita's target demographic from under it, namely affluent 16-25 year old males. Nobody wants to throw hundreds of dollars at an ungainly device good for nothing but games anymore, especially when they're already carrying something that can provide limitless quick entertainment through games, web browsing, Facebook etc.

3DS numbers depend as much on whether DS saturation precludes parents buying their kids new devices.

Nintendo will make its phone before they go on to Ios. xD

For all the doom about the 3DS, at least its really strong in one territory (Japan). The Vita is DOA in Japan and in the US. I feel bad whenever any piece of hardware fails but I don't see any quick fix on the horizon. Sub 100k this soon after launch is abysmal. I don't think even a $50 price drop would resuscitate here in the US.

my guess is that it is calculating growth for each individual company. I wonder how it would look with the mobile market included .

Basiccally the growth and contraction of the other companies net out to be quite small. On average everyone else did much worse then nintendo

I have a lot of iOS games and not even all of them combined have given me as much enjoyment as my favorite DS games.

Nintendo's handheld sales in the US have always lagged behind Japan in terms of the speed of adoption (I think it took at least a year longer for us to see the GBA and DS outsell their predecessors in monthly sales). Nintendo should be really concerned though that DS sales have also fallen off a cliff.

Pokemon on 3ds in 2013, will do the trick. The glorious millions. Pokemon should be a title that releases with a console, alongside with Mario.

It needs more than one or two big games. DS took off because it built up a critical mass of content, and that took a few years to do. And some of that content will invariably be what people consider shovelware, too.

Yup.

Which is why Sony needs to release their Vita games on iPhones/Android devices as soon as the hardware permits.

Shouldn't be too long given how Vita's hardware uses mobile components.

This is the only way to *win* in the handheld space these days. It's just an inevitability.
