You know if Microsoft does go through with this, basically you're literally renting a game every time you buy the Durango version until MS shuts the servers down.

Indeed. I'm currently with BT, £10 a month for 18meg unlimited with no throttling.
I had no idea the situation was so dire in the US. I'll never badmouth BT again. Jesus Christ, I'm counting my blessings after reading some of the horror stories in here about charges for exceeding data caps and provider monopolies.

Except if PSN goes down you can still play that offline with tunneling services through the system link. Problem is PSN buyers have to dial-into servers for DRM checks now and then depending on the style of DRM used. Not sure if Warhawk does that but if I remember right when PSN was down with the hack it had no ability to open Warhawk.

Why do I get the feeling that the comments about Microsoft funding Press Reset were more accurate than previous thought?
I think it's more amazing that supposedly tech savvy people don't realize how the internet works. Assume anything you put on the internet is there FOREVER. You can't delete screencaps once in the hands of a third party.
That said, I fell asleep after page 33 last night wondering if this would go thermonuclear. It did not disappoint.
But you're comparing an optional service to a mandatory requirement for the operation(at least, as far as playing games go) of an entire device. Surely you see a difference, no?
Anyway, with all this always connected talk, the rumors about MS pursuing a subscription based model seems more likely. They seem to be basing this console's business model on that of mobile devices. Perhaps they feel they can get away with the occasional interruptions/failures of an always connected requirement, if (some) people won't be paying upfront anyway.
I imagine them thinking; "We can justify occasional instability if we treat the entire console like a service. We should double down on a subscription model to emphasize this concept."

There's a difference between always online and requiring a connection just to launch a game. Sony stated their box won't require it to launch games.
I know several people that are in school and working two part time jobs. When they are having a rough time getting by the internet is the first thing they cut. They will at least be able to launch SOME PS4 games as opposed to 720 blocking all.

it's a shame. They pretty much lost my interest once Pete Moore left and gaming went with him I must admit (though it took a few years to get to the point I am now where i'm back to pc only with wiiu for family fun).

There isn't an overall requirement that all games be online all the time, but there's certainly no reason a company can't make a Sim City type excuse for individual games to be always online.

It's like that in many places in the US. The problem is the US is freaking HUGE. Where I use to live I had 3 choices. I had cable Internet at 60Mb/s for $49 a month.
Now I live in a less populated area and my only "FAST" choice is a 15Mb/s cable connection at freaking $69 a month. Ugh

Pretty much the situation I have here. Locked into 2mbit £45 a month internet where I currently live. Will be on 100mbit £35 a month when I move in July. It is insane.
I realize now I deserve that. The notes on total global sales said Dec 2012 but when when it went by region the notes were only updated from 2009 in the US and 2010 for Europe. I don't know why they arranged their information like that.
So how large of percentage of global sales was made outside of the US and Europe?

Well yeah it does, if he was serious it makes the story only slightly more news worthy. What will be will be and some guy (Aaron green berg doesn't even know, bit weird?) mouthing off on twitter is such a non event.
