Xbox v.Next and Only Online by Paul Thurrott: Deal With It :)

Quip about the "good run" aside, there is no chance of this actually happening.

I'm not so sure about it.

Judging by the latest media, the future is looking bleak for the Nextbox.

Consumers on every gaming site are outraged at the prospect of being forced to be online to play any game. Be it multiplayer or singleplayer.

Unless Microsoft does an amazing job spinning this into a "positive" feature, I'm not expecting great sales for the system.

And with no sales, developers stop supporting it.

If Nextbox gets Xbox like sales and Ps4 gets Ps2 like sales (which frankly does seem likely, should microsoft not change this feature), I'm expecting devs to march away from the Nextbox, much like they did on the Xbox.

Man, if the next Xbox is truly online required, the only thing that will save it are the stubbornness of third parties. They'll make the next Xbox a success just like they did with PS3. It's shame really since they have so many options now then back then. There really is no need to support should an anticonsumerist policy in this new generation

Lol at crying "Bully!" when people respond to Orth's shitty attitude and even shittier attempts at analogies. Dude brought it on himself.

Even bigger lol at trying to spin forced online connectivity as a positive. "It's one less decision you have to worry about having the freedom to make! The Durango doubles as one HELL of a paperweight when your internet is down, it's always got a use!"

Or they could just quote that one guy on these boards. "So what if you can't play your games exactly when you want to, every single time? Go outside, it's not a big deal."

can we talk about this now, or is this still considered a rumour?

seriously, people needs to get a grip on discussion's sake of "rumors" that have enough merits to justify its existence.

well, denial is denial

Publishers can be on board all they want, but if the PS4 has 5x the user base because 5x as many people can actually buy the console and use it. It will have more games.

Of course. But to have a 5x userbase, large enough to convince publishers to dismiss the other console, the next xbox has to fail spectacularly. And we all know it's not going to happen.

Besides, the market has changed. Every major third party title is developed with as many platform as possible in mind.

Come on. It's EA. They go where the money is.

And I have a really hard time believing it'll be on the console that a large number of people are saying they won't purchase due to it requiring to be always on.

EA will definately support it. But I doubt that 2 years after it's launch, there'll be a big userbase for it. Unless Microsoft makes some serious changes. Like playing games without being forced to be online.

Well I would love if they jumped in and fucked themselves over. But being serious, why would MS do such a crazy thing unless they cooked up some deal together with content providers that was going to deal the killing blow to Sony? If the PS conference is any indication, Activision hasn't yet taken a side in the next gen, so it's not them. Ubi is still supporting the WiiU, so it's not them. It could be cable I guess, but that's not selling a game console.

Lots of people sound like assholes :/ Things like this make me sad.

How does a company's success affect you in a negative way? I don't understand these biased statements. Unless you're concerned that other companies will jump on the 'always-online' bandwagon?

Not even then. Always online, that´s where i draw the line.

Yup, I'll just ignore whatever they do till they get rid of it, but even then, my trust in MS would be lost since they have the intent of including always-on DRM and the fact they could add it in later.

Yikes. E3 could be explosive this year, and not for promising reasons.

Really hope the mass markets embraces the PS4 if this turns out to be true. However, despite a backlash from "core" gamers, I can still see the nextbox selling like hotcakes in NA.

Also, if it is always online, I wouldn't buy it even if they wheeled out PGR5, Alan Wake 2 and a bunch of interesting new IPs. No sir -e.

I hope the people who says that they're not supporting this shit by not buying the console will not give in once the Halo's and the Forza's are unveiled. At least the GAFfers.

I don't care about Halo or Forza, so I'm currently passing on the Nextbox if these rumors are true.

At least, there used to be a time where that was a wise decision. It was never a wise decision to buy a console just for Halo.

lol I'm sorry. I was honestly just taking a jab because I'm waiting for my laundry and I was bored.

Ugh, how many people thought the next Wii system or PS3 would fail before they were revealed?

It can happen and MS is making it damn easy.

The proclamation that the new Xbox will require an internet connection, immediately followed by Windows 8 and Windows Phone as examples, is odd. I would rather wait for the console to be revealed before making any final conclusions.

I really wonder if the 2 will go down together on a sinking ship here, EA clearly wants this always online more than any other third party publisher out there.

This might only work to some degree in the US where the Xbox brand is strong, but the infrastructure is still not there in the entire country.

Japan wont care about the next Xbox no matter what, always online means they may as well not release it there.

And Europe will likely give the biggest middle finger in the history of mankind to such a device.

Yep this may work in NA but i don't see thing going over good in EU .
Plus EA can never go exclusive to MS unless the don't want that FIFA money were Sony going to do better in EU .

This

I am pretty sure they are all on board with this, since it also benefits them (curb-stomps used games, piracy etc) but being on board does not mean they will be exclusive to the 720. It is too risky to bet on a such a thing, on one console with no established userbase with such a risky propostion

I never thought that 599 would be eclipsed, like who would want to even do that? Commit suicide by taking a gigantic risk with nothing in return for the consumer, and yet here we are, on verge of a confirmation of it.

There is still hope, however faint, that this entire thing is somehow one giant misunderstanding. Ive bought every home console from Nintendo, Sega, Sony and MS bar the Saturn, and this Xbox will join that elusive club if this turns out to be true.

Watch out for hired cheerers in their conference audience. Not even kidding. If they announce this "feature" and people start cheering, I hope some journalists look into it. Even if it's legit, it'd be nice just to find out what excites them about the feature.

This E3,

720 presentation: It's always on! Can't play 360 games! DLC DLC DLC

PS4 presentation directly following 720's: Not always on, no DRM, backwards compatible with PS1, PS2, and PS3 games! Makes candy!

PS4 isn't backwards compatible (they said this already) and there is a good chance that the 720 will be (even if some rumours say no, there are others which say otherwise).
The 2010 doc and some recent rumours talked about 2 APUs where 1 is for BC.

I think i misread your post.
Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Looks like you read it right to me.

Well yes, that second part is always a concern because if one company gets away with it then every company will probably get away with it. And I'm not really biased. I did the majority of my gaming on the 360 this gen but Microsoft seems like they want to jump the shark here and I don't feel like playing that game when PS4 has already unveiled a system that doesn't have terrible rumors running it into the ground.

that's not going to happen. The Xbox shipped a total of like 30 million consoles over it's lifespan. The PS2 shipped over 150 million. That will not happen again.

I agree that it's unlikely, but it wouldn't be unprecedented for the successor of a successful console to bite the dust.

This much bad press can easily ruin a consoles chances. We'll have to see what the actual announcements consist of but it's really not looking good.

Basing it on what we know(I think):

- Won't be as powerful
- Will require an internet connection
- Will require a Kinect
- Will likely continue with a subscription model for premium online services
- Will, due to budgetary constraints of AAA development, likely have a very similar AAA library to the PS4

I really fail to see its appeal.

I didnt want to make a thread for this rant so i will put it here.

Why is it still impossible complicated for me to cancel XBL? If you have a credit card attached to the account there is no possible way to cancel it with out calling in.

A brand name you can trust and always online allows us to target you and your family with what you want while allowing you to share your life with everyone instantly.....

I don't care what people think of me. I'm hoping for that Xbox bomba still.

I believe in some countries and states (in the US) you can cancel it through their website.

But like you said, i had to call in to cancel, and i even had to explain "why" so the young lady could write it down.

It's not a rumour anymore. If Paul says it's true it is true. He doesn't get this stuff wrong.

In some countries with consumer protection laws you can cancel your sub on Xbox.com.

If you can't, suck it up and call them. Be strong.

Why can't we get a straight answer about the next Xbox being always online, even in rumor? He says the console will be always online oriented, but will have an offline mode. I just want them to announce this thing already. These rumors are starting to make me feel scummy, because I supported Microsoft this generation.

Sure it can happen.

Is MS making it easy? Microsoft isn't doing anything.

We don't know anything. Even if always-online is confirmed, we still don't know how exactly it will work.

We're just pulling things out of our asses, really.

But expecting the next xbox to completely fail is a bit delusional.

How the hell can they spin a system that can't function offline as a positive?

"Immersive experience" Consumers are always connected to the xbox. Downloading stuff when your away from home and the xbox is in sleep mode etc.
