FRIDAYTON MK II: 5.5 million bears and salmon create unholy allliance to sack SONY HQ

What's funny is Cerny tells us that they doubled the RAM because the developers said 4GB is too little. Now all of a sudden, giving developers a pinch more and using the majority of the additional RAM for OS and everything is fine. They put in all of this extra GDDR5 RAM only to have the majority of it used for OS bloat. We're talking about future proofing... how about the lean mean gaming machine future proof the games and allocate more resources to it? No wonder that developer said Sony would be killed if they shipped with 4 GB of RAM with the story of this massive OS on the system. What did developers have to use before? 2 GB? 1.5 GB? If 4 GB is RAM aplenty for next-gen, take the extra 4 GDDR5 out and put that extra $50 or $80 towards a higher tier GPU.

I got on Microsoft for their massive resource usage not dedicated to games, so Sony will get the same treatment. At least in Microsoft's case, they are at least DOING something with the RAM, whether it be Kinect, the multiple operating systems or DVR functionality. Sony is just sitting on a massage pool of RAM for no reason they've communicated to gamers. 3.5 GB is utterly ridiculous. If 4.5 is supposedly enough for next-gen games, which are some of the most resource intensive applications around, what in the world is Sony planning to run in the background of a game? Allow you to instantaneously switch into a Home-esque 3d world/interface while playing a game?

My PC has plug n play since like forever.

Lame response. You know what I mean. lol

PC Gaming is a heck of a lot more community oriented than consoles. Look at it's most popular genres: MMOs and MOBAs, games that highly emphasize team play and social groups.

It's a different type of community on consoles than PC, though. Personally I like the console community better. Different strokes for different folks.

I also informed the community Killer Instinct was a Free to Play title, sometimes you just get things wrong no matter what. E3 this year was a time where lots of papers were being shuffled left and right. I do my best to contribute, but I can be wrong too. My apologies dear sir.

Well you should be smarter than repeat everything you're told. I occasionally get tidbits from friends about this and that (for example I knew all the time The Witcher 3 was coming to Xbone when CD-Projekt was refusing to announce it and their programmers impressions of the consoles), but I try to keep what I hear to myself.

Ever stop to think, that perhaps it was, and Microsoft came in at the last minute and secured another moneyhat?
Like in the 15 minutes between thuway claimed it was exclusive and the multiplatform announcement?

4GB total, given that part of that 4GB would be used up by the OS, they got an upgrade overall, and that's what they wanted. Simple.

I did a thread search for this after seeing it on another site, and couldn't find anything. I thought it was incredibly bizarre that NeoGAF wouldn't be talking about this, but then I found the incredibly cryptic thread title... then I remembered which side of the fence this site is on.
Wow, you're allowed to flat out accuse mods of bias like that?

Wow.Way to re-write the story. Where does the 1.5 for OS come from? Feels like there is some salt affecting interpretations. Get over it.4.5-5.5 is plenty. Dick waving contest can still be won with these figures.
Err don't blame me they asked what the insiders are saying these numbers are from a shinobi post earlier .... Take it up with him :s

I hope your not taking the word of so called "industry insiders". I am not buying it

It's amusing to see people think this is a big deal. PC games don't even use anywhere near 4GB between what is running in the OS memory space and what is held in GPU RAM. To think the hardware in the PS4 or X1 is ever going to be powerful enough to warrant needing 4+GB of RAM is pretty funny.

So why put 4GB of extra GDDR 5 in there instead of giving us a better GPU/processor or dropping the price even further? CURRENT gen games might not use 4 GB, but you best believe the differences will start availing themselves when developers fully make the transition from current gen to the next-gen.

Reserving 1GB of memory for something you "might" need in the future is entirely stupid. Especially if your OS is already 1.5GB to begin with. That's basically saying you're going to have to add an entire operating system's worth of features at some point. Does anyone seriously believe Sony is going to add that much given what the PS4 can currently do with 1.5GB?

It's not entirely stupid given that people shit on the PS3's OS all the time because they didn't plan ahead.

I don't get why you're getting on thuway's case... a ton of stuff changed during E3. Even CBOAT wasn't 100% correct during this year's show.

If the PS4 had 4GB of RAM...it would still need to have an OS. This would mean there would be maybe 1.5-2GB available for games, which would be too little.

So Cerny is still fine with what he said.

3.5 GB
2.5 GB
1.5 GB

Nobody knows , its called speculation and thanks to it we have a 100 page td.

Keep calm and wait for Sony , or developers statements....

The problem is, we've had developer statements, which all basically say "Calm the fuck down. You people have no clue what you're talking about. We have plenty of RAM to work with, for the sake of holy fuck."

Nobody listened.

So this is confirmed? Lame. Cerny talk about getting devs the extra RAM they asked for seems disingenuous now
Amazing how devs (you know, the guys and gals who work with this shit) all seem to be more than happy with the PS4's RAM. But don't let that cloud your righteous indignation.

Again, you are assuming that none of the original 4GB would have been reserved. They doubled the RAM and in the process at least doubled the available memory for games. Seems to me this is delivering exactly on the request.

Like in the 15 minutes between thuway claimed it was exclusive and the multiplatform announcement?

You seem to have something against the guy. Did he even say he got the info 15 minutes before the square conference?
He (and a few others) heard about it being exclusive and they spoke about it. Who's to say thuway didn't hear that information a few days earlier?

Yup there was a twitter post earlier by a naughty dog dev who basically said ppl are overreacting in comments . Dunno if he was referring to gaf or some other site

It's not entirely stupid given that people shit on the PS3's OS all the time because they didn't plan ahead.

People need to stop saying this like it means anything. PS3's OS shrunk dramatically over the life of the system in terms of RAM usage, it was still bigger than the 360's OS, and it still lacked features in comparison. It had nothing to do with a lack of RAM.

That's why CBOAT should keep his leaks to himself. Stuff like "MS is paying for not mentioning other versions" turned out to be flat out wrong. No point in doing those confirmations when you're wildly off the mark way too often.

You can easily build a $800 PC with a $300 Radeon 7950, which has 3GB GDDR5 and already 50% more powerful than PS4's GPU.

compare that to the cost of $400 PS4, and pay $50 a year for online for its life cycle (8 years?).

they cost the same!

This is the dumbest reach I think I've seen yet, though to be fair I've only lightly skinned this thread since it was always destined to be a shitstorm. You're going to spend more than $800 on a PC with a 7950 and a blu ray drive unless you get a CPU that bottlenecks your GPU or buy mostly used parts. That's skipping over the PS+ nonsense.

Reading that people are cancelling pre-orders over this is baffling.
Who said this? Worse case there is 5.5GB of super fast memory and a really nice, feature rich and smooth OS. This is actually a positive to me, because it sounds to me like the PS4 will not only push better graphics, but keep up in terms of OS with the Xbone.

yeah, title change makes difficult to follow this thread. it should be something clear about what's going on.

I agree with this. Was reading it on a break at work, then couldn't find it when I came home. Only found it again randomly when I wanted to see why such a strange thread had become so long.

It really is a lot easier to hear confirmation and THEN come out and say "i knew it"...

Indeed it is. For what it's worth I said on Neogaf back in the day that Haze could be a PS3 exclusive before any rumours appeared online whatsoever, but got scolded by the friend who told me that, so I stopped leaking anything whatsoever (I don't claim to know many industry people BTW).
