Sony's Gamescom Media Briefing On "Release Plans for PlayStation 4"

The tears in his eyes (and Tretton's earlier) really got to me. Touching, honestly.

Reminds you that these executives and faces of companies are human beings. You don't get to a place like that in a company without having tremendous pride in your work. The zealous validation of their work must have been felt like an absolute validation of self.
Yup. He barely made it without breaking down on stage. Tretton probably already waited for him behind the stage with a huge smile and a hug. You have to just imagine turning the camera behind his back and see the crowd going nuts over every word he says. After years of hard work, dozens of sleepless nights and the constant fear your company might be in trouble to just get such overwhelming approval must be insane.

Probably one of the happiest moments in his entire life. And well deserved.

I think we just invented empathy-porn.

EDIT: For real though, the high fives and hugs back stage must have been unreal. In any circumstance, that level of triumph has to be one of the greatest feelings in the world.

Wow, was Andy House really holding back tears? I guess I missed it. At what moment did Tretton's come? I'm a sucker for tears.
They're my bidet.

How do you know there were tears?

Vision? A familiarity with the appearance of different emotional states? Hahaha.

Watch the gif, man. It catches the moment perfectly where you see the gloss of his eyes and the revealing swallow before he stifles a proud smile.

We're not gonna start arguing over whether Andrew House was emotionally overcome are we?

You know what, it's just good to have you back in this thread, sir.

I am sick as a dog. Been spending a lot of time on the couch. Did I miss anything? I still am standing by it not releasing in October... which doesn't really mean anything, because it's not like I win anything if i'm right or lose anything if i'm wrong. In fact if im wrong it means I get the console sooner so that's a good thing.

But talking to folks on launch software... they don't think the timetable for an october release adds up. Then again... maybe they find out during lunch tomorrow that their timetables are pushed up and they can never see their families again... which even though they are friends - is fine by me :p

You didn't miss a single thing. You broke the biggest 'news' on your podcast yesterday with the SuperStardust succcessor being a PS+ IGC game alongside Driveclub at launch. You still stand by that one right?

p.s. Feel better, man.

Hahahahaha, I laughed so hard at your spoiler tag. Perfect. But yeah, watch the gif a few posts above and you'll see.

I'm gonna look for the image or gif of Tretton's eyes welling as he smiles during his presentation (from the DRM section IIRC). A gaffer has the image as their avatar, I believe. I'll try to find it and add it in an edit.

EDIT: Okay, maybe I spoke too soon on Tretton. His eyes well up a little when he's smiling about the reaction, and you can tell he definitely could cry, but I don't think I can say he was holding them back.

I stand by Andrew House though. That mofo was holding back tears.

Sounds like a lot of games will have day one patches in October.

Meh, I was hyped for gamescom, but with Sony holding back and Microsoft not having a press conference my antecipation all but died.

I can't say it's a bad thing though. I am open to be surprised by both competitors and won't be disappointed with whatever they show tomorrow.

I didn't know gaf knew I had a podcast. My self promotion is "hide it from everyone and then complain no one listens."

Yeah - I stand by that. I only heard it from one dude but the guy is solid and it makes sense. Shit changes - of course - so it's not 100%. But it's solid info - not hearsay.

Didn't saw anything on Tretton, but he was as happy as a man probably can be. House was pretty fucking close though. Rewatched his segment and noticed it immediately. He really had to fight to stay on script. Just look at his facial expressions and the proud smile after the price announcement.

Mort, you killed most of my Gamescom hype already with your comments a few days back. I hope you're happy....

Kidding, but I am upset with this whole notion that Sony is holding back. If they really had 20 first party exclusives launching in 1 year, with us only knowing of 5, then why can't they at least show us what they have planned for the first half of 2014, besides Infamous?

Ship and patch.

My understanding is that they start at release and schedule backwards. Being a console launch no one knew what the release was so they all were given educated guesstimates. And all of those are the games being done at the end of October... and then taking a few weeks to press and ship.

Can that be moved up? I would assume so. But i'm just passing on what i've heard about it regarding the actual logistics.

In regards to the rumor though... nearly everyone I talk to except for these guys believe it. Including someone at SCEE who works in social/media/community stuff (and the OG CBoaT). So I know the rumor is out there in full force and I'm kinda dumb for sticking my neck out with contradictory info. But... i'm not saying it as fact, im just giving the perspective that was explained to me.

Either way - late October or mid November - it's soon and I want it. Gimme.

Software needs to be ready by October. If it's not ready, well, they're kind of screwed because PS4 needs to release a few weeks later at most in order to meet the onslaught of third party software.

I don't see a few weeks delay really doing much for polishing up launch software.

I'd be crying too if I kicked the guy who's been bullying me for eight years right in the nuts.

OMG. So sad to see a consumer attach emotion to brand. That and I don't see any tears. Will buy one at that price though :)

Hey, look at the bright side. If you are right, you will be the only Gaf insider to get this right, and that includes Cboat.

Microsoft is doing the same thing now. I know HipHopGamer is reporting that they aren't showing Quantum Break.

I think there's a laser focus on launch. After that year one will be rolled out. I agree with you though that I want to see more games. It's frustrating to me that despite Sony having the advantage on nearly every topic that games they still lag behind a bit. Launch lineups are a wash but Microsoft has an amazing exclusive in Titanfall and also teased Halo super, super early. Perception becomes reality and it would be nice for Sony to get out in front of this. Because I think if we came out of gamescom with the Demon's Souls spiritual successor, Uncharted 4 announced, SSM and Guerrilla's new IP's unveiled, The Order gameplay.... then Sony would have the far superior announced lineup. It would be easier for fence sitters to go "ya know, fuck halo and titanfall, I want all that stuff."

So while I understand what and why sony are doing and I don't think it's an awful idea - i do also wish they would go for the knock out punch before the fight even started.

They should at least show some teasers. Microsoft did the same, and everybody knows that Sony's big studios must have something in development anyway.

Do we even know what the launch lineup is? I'm expecting Mid November too but would like to be surprised with a late October launch.

Some games already have dates set in stone. BF4 and AC4 are October 29. CoD is November 5. Stuff like Madden and Fifa will already be officially released. The only real wild card I see in the launch lineup is Watch Dogs. If that game launches earlier with the PS4 launch or isn't until Nov 19/Nov 22.

I think it would be a smart idea to get hardware out ahead of these releases to be there on day one. I guess we'll find out tomorrow!

I agree. And as a fan of videogames I just want to see the games.

But it's no-win. If they blow their load now this place and the rest of the internet will be freaking out next march going "ANNOUNCE NEW GAMES SONY OMGGGGGG!"

Well what's worse, people complaining and asking for new games after they've bought the PS4, or people complaining and asking for new games before putting money down on one?
Sony not teasing stuff now is dumb, quite frankly.

Not crying, but fighting back tears of joy.

I get chills every time I re-watch this part of E3. The way the crowd reacted to the price and how Andrew House had a genuine smile on his face cannot be replicated. Same way Tretton had to pause after each used games/DRM announcement to let the cheering fade away. Pretty amazing.
