First off, what is Dreams?

By habit, it's difficult to stop yourself from calling it a game, but that ultimately leads to confusion. Dreams is a fully fledged development suite, composed of every discipline required to make your own games, art, animations, assets, music etc. If you can imagine it then you can create it, in one form or another. Each discipline has its own toolkit and each of those toolkits is deep, but the surface mechanics are simple enough to get even the youngest child started. Whether you take the lego approach and borrow from what the community has provided, or take the more complex route of digging down into the minutia, producing your own creations from scratch, Dreams has you covered.

Dreams has a ten year plan supporting it, so clearly it's eventually going to be coming to the PS5, and during that ten year lifecycle, Media Molecule are going to keep adding to Dreams, taking feedback from the community on what they'd like changed or included in future patches/updates. Of course Media Molecule also have their own additions they're working on, such as a new animation technique that will allow for more complex editing, with the added bonus of reducing the strain on the thermo. Buying the Early Access now for $30/£25 will get you the tools, a handful of Media Molecule created experiences and a plethora of community created content. If you buy Early Access, you will eventually get the full game at no extra cost. I highly recommend buying Early Access.

Wait ... why has it gone gold all of a sudden?

edit: I'm now a gold member? What does that mean ...? LOL

Some tutorial playlists I feel are worth mentioning:

Mirror of official tutorials that are in Dreams:

NeOnThEcOdEr: This guy seriously knows his stuff. He isn't the clearest in his explanations however and he goes into some pretty advanced, complicated stuff. his videos can be long:

LadylexUK: Very clear explanations, a soothing voice. Though she doesn't go into some of the crazy advanced stuff NeOnThEcOdEr does. Her videos are generally on the shorter side:

Posting from your own YT channel has been given the go ahead, but let's be sensible about it ... OK. We want to see what YOU and others have created!

I really wanted to grab the Early Access but I just do not have the time to actually get into it. I am starting to miss the creator already, though.

I think this is amazing. I also think this is where the community should focus their efforts right now:

That’s a beautiful OT for a beautiful game. Unfortunately outside the early access I haven’t played. Dreams make me unleash whatever creativity I have in me

Nice, good work on the OT. Glad we finally have one.

Love working on animations in Dreams, but it takes a lot of time and they really have to fix the bugs. Some can cause you to lose hours of work.

Anyway, here's some creations of mine (the Praying Mantis kung fu animation is work in progress, very early stuff still. also, I only did the animations):

This one was a little remix, where I re-did the animations:

Working on two collabs atm, but no footage of it yet.

Can't wait for that update for the animations.

Nice OT, and I'm glad someone gifted you the Gold. That was a nice gesture.

I'm not interested in creating games, so I envision this as something I would pick up 6-12 months after it's out, after there has been plenty of time for the creative types to do their thing.

Impressive work, Psykodad. I know how difficult animation is so appreciate this a lot.
Thanks. It's quite therapeutic tbh, because it's really testing my patience at times. Especially that Praying Mantis animation and I haven't even gotten to the hardest part yet. lol

I'm finding it hard to see who the tutorials are aimed at. The controls seem overly convoluted and lengthy for children (who really, really don't need this sort of handholding as they pick up things easily) and adults who may very well need handholding, but not done in this overly patronising, talking down to a disabled person style.
I mean who even talks like that? I was really put off by the title simply because of the time it wasted introducing me to basic concepts like a mouse pointer.

I may get this in winter if there is a good sale. No way I'm going to have the time I'd need to invest into it ATM.

Why wait for a sale when you can already buy it much cheaper? :) And as I pointed out, you really don't need to do anything but consume content. No creativity required.

For me it would be more about creation. Thinking I could just play things and not get sucked into that would only be kidding myself.

Yeah, not really sure what it's going to do exactly, but it sounds like something that's gonna make me happy.

What I got from it was that you'll be able to edit even AFTER you've recorded footage. Alex said the tech you use for animating on timelines/keyframes, is exactly the same tech you use for live animations. That suggests to me we'll be able to 'record' some animations and then edit the roughness out of them with no need for keyframes. It would basically then just save the 'path' of the animation just like the puppeteering, and that's likely why it cuts the thermo right down.

Okay, so just to be clear, that means we'll be able to fully edit the transitions between keyframes? Even if we only work with keyframes? Because if so, that'll be a dream come true.

Not really sure what all the thermo stuff is about and how it relates to animations, but the less, the better, I suppose.

Yes. :)

This is how I think MM will 'increase' the thermo so to speak. It's not that the thermo will get bigger, it's that the strain on it will lessen as they add in more features dealt with on the engine side of things.

Don't want to spam this thread, but here's an early video of a collab I'm doing with Go1den-god1y and Shao1inGodling:

It's nice to have an environment that brings people together like this. I can do a bit of animation, but I know little else atm.
The ease of getting invited to do a collab and seeing the project come together while working with complete strangers is something else.
Can't wait to see what the future will bring.

My favorite demonstration of Dreams' capabilities was this, made back in the January beta:

A dark, gritty sci-fi first person shooter, HUD and all. It really shows that Dreams isn't so much a game as it is a full-on platform of its own. It no doubt takes a ton of work to make something this ambitious, but I'm sure you get out of it what you put in.

Some people are god-tier. That is mindblowing.

And people were claiming Dreams was just "kiddy visuals".

Because I prefer originality. I tend to stay away from any game in Dreams that's a copy of an established IP.
I do know what you're saying, though I don't mind it. As much as we like to think originality, all the things we do are a subconscious copy of something we like, adding our own twist to it that makes it unique/ours.

I can't agree with that. I have three ideas for games and none of them are based on anything other than me thinking of gameplay mechanics. People seem inclined to compare, so it doesn't matter how original your idea is, they will compare it to other games. I don't think it's the other way around in a lot of cases.

I haven't checked new creations in weeks, I'm sure when log on there will be a ton of amazing stuff to see/play.
Dreams is already getting better than ps+ game offerings.
