But Nirolak said it was a success!

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I totally called it! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyway, for a more in depth post... of brevity. FE:if performs well as we have come to expect thanks to Niro's big post on "expanding a brand" and franchise care that Nintendo has really put into the series after Awakening's success. (Does Nintendo fund the concerts, or does IS pay for that themselves?)

I do hope we some more ventures from IS given their successes here even if they are STEAMbombas! Time to revive AW, and give it a refresh for modern times I'd say.

Splatoon continues to be unsINKable, and it has made it such that I wonder just how much of a catch up game the WiiU will play on its last year LTD and even the PS4's current LTD come the holidays if Nintendo makes some wise bundle choices.

Also I contineu to be surprised by how damage Final Fantasy is as a brand.
And wonder why DQHeroes didn't release on the WiiU... >.>

It's really good to see Fire Emblem, who only got remakes during the DS generation, awakened itself into a beast. I appreciate more of Nirolak's post on how FE:if was not a simple "more of the same, but better" approach like Bravely Default or Tales of Xillia 2.

Monster Hunter 4G Best Price release is coming on July 30th for 3490 yen, and the download version is cheaper at 3,231 yen, I'd assume the latter's just a digital price drop.

This will be interesting. Did the OG version get a Best Price release?

Sony provided incentives to SE (branding, marketing, budget, etc.)

It's going to be interesting to see which platform DQXI launches
N3DS/NX :p

I figure our jokes about DQXI will come to an end somewhere around TGS. I wonder if we won't get official (finally) confirmation on MHF2 for the PS4 as well.

If we don't hear about it then, then I will be confused. I'm assuming that the only reason it wasn't included in the E3 "coming sometime this decade" Sony reel was because they're saving it for TGS (as the franchise is Japan-centric), presuming that it is for the PS4 or consoles in general. (It would fill in the blank on Level-5s missing RPG for the PS4.)

Again with Splatoon comparisons.

Second comparison is with Mario Kart 8.
This is not a LTD battle, but a "Legs" battle.
So I excluded first week sales and I started the comparison from week 2.
Also, both games were released the same time of the year. That makes easier to read trends.

Pull through!

Slightly unrelated, but

http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B0107QAYIE/

I believe The Great Ace Attorney is the first third party title on a Nintendo console with the digital version available on Amazon.co.jp (which is something that Nintendo started a few months ago, and that's why we see digital SKUs, or even DLCs in top 100). It seems it appeared suddenly today.

...actually, searching a bit more, it's not the only one

http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00VWQJIHW/

Super Run for the Money has the digital version on Amazon as well. It seems now digital Nintendo plans are expanding. If I have to guess, digital third party SKUs appear exactly one week before the release. Thus, we'll probably see Yokai Watch Busters getting it in the next two days. Hopefully, the next phase is pre-loading.

P.S. I fear SRFM will have such a loooow debut.

This will be a close one. If Smash is included in October bundles then Splatoon will lose but if Smash is not included I see both titles at 800.000 LTD approx.

It had okay results for what appears to be a really low effort game, but it's a pretty low performer for the genre, and given it had the FF brand attached, that's probably extra poor in some ways.

Final Fantasy is not a healthy brand.

Explorers sold more from what it deserved and expected, at least from retailers' part. I can't say the same for the other 2, they stayed will unsold copies from the initial shipment.

If Nintendo is intelligent enough (I doubt it, nowadays) Fall bundle should be Splatoon, not Smash.

Media Create answered my email about the english site.
They said that they're too busy writing the Emerging Countries Game Report, that's why they couldn't update the english site.
They'll try to update at least the rankings (without comment).

That's a tricky one. What if Splatoon is still selling good numbers in October? (like 7-10.000 units a week). If you make a good bundle in price is money that you're loosing for selling Splatoon separately.

I don't know, maybe if Splatoon is still selling well it would be better to bundle Wii U with an old title that is not selling well anymore (Pikmin 3, Mario 3D World, Smash...) and still getting money from Splatoon sold separately.

Hard to believe we're actually comparing Splatoon to Smash and Mario Kart sales. Those two games were probably hurt by the fact that they both have 3DS counterparts.

Smash bros for sure but Mario Kart has had handheld iterations for a while. I think the general poor performance for the WiiU is more relevant than anything really. Splatoon was suppose to be Nintendo's next big franchise so if it approaches Smash than it has done its job. Really though, if WiiU even did gamecube numbers I wonder how much bigger Splatoon could have been.

I can see this being a strong case for Smash, since the 3DS version came shortly before and they were marketed as the same game, essentially. But it's different with Mario Kart as handheld Mario Kart has co-existed with console Mario Kart since the release of Super Circuit on GBA, and MK7 and MK8 were released nearly three years apart. I think the WiiU's userbase, in this case, is a stronger limiting factor for MK8. Although selling a million (and counting) puts it ahead of Super Circuit and Double Dash!!, which is a great result anyway.

Edit: beaten, basically.

Wii U needs a price cut (still the same from launch).
They could reduce the price to 25.000¥ and then, Bundle Splatoon for 30.000¥ (the same price that costs now the console without game).

That would be enough, I think.

Dragon Quest X must have a lot more subscribers than Final Fantasy XIV in Japan. Like, A LOT more.
There around 1 mil of FF14 active subscribers estimated, half of them dedicated to JP servers. Looking at disc sales numbers for PS3/PS4, it seems that they do not play on consoles.

I wonder which one is more profitable. Domestic sales usually make more money for the company.
Things are different for MMO. And also FF14 have cash shop that increase average paid amount per player. Even judging from active players numbers from more than year ago - FF14 should have more revenue. Costs on the other hand I expect also be higher for FF14.

There's clearly a much higher level of sustained interest for DQX across multiple platforms, than there is for FFXIV. Especially taking into account FFXIV's troubled history.
On consoles. I would expect that 80+% of FF14 players to be on PC, as PS3 version is vastly inferior to the point of beeing unbearable at certain situation, and PS4 version was launched half an year later of FF14 ARR release.
And you actually need to re-buy ff14 to play on different platform (you'll retain access to your characters) that significantly limits number of people who'll switch over.

I inclined to that idea as well. Smash has been proven to continuously sell in trickles even if unbundled, and Splatoon is the hotter game right now, so might as well ride the momentum created by Splatoon.

There around 1 mil of FF14 active subscribers estimated, half of them dedicated to JP servers. Looking at disc sales numbers for PS3/PS4, it seems that they do not play on consoles.

1. DQX also has PC version and people who play on PC tend to have multiple ID for farming and doing quest, half of my friend play 2-4 ID at the same time daily.

Things are different for MMO. And also FF14 have cash shop that increase average paid amount per player. Even judging from active players numbers from more than year ago - FF14 should have more revenue. Costs on the other hand I expect also be higher for FF14.

2. DQX also has real money items, and trust me players love to spend on cosmetic items so much in DQX

3. same case on DQX, even I have all Wii WiiU 3DS and PC version

To add to this, a while back I remember talking with Nirolak about a DQX mobile app that they rolled out. It's a companion app which offers premium services to players on their phone like quick access to the marketplace and other convenience features which are chargable via microtransactions. He was pointing out how the app was doing very well in terms of revenue.

Yes, they continually cite it in their fiscal reports to boot, which is reserved for a small handful of mobile games (the others being DQM:SL, FFRK, School Girl Strikers, and Kai-Rei-Sei Million Arthur).

Here's the revenue chart. Not pictured is it going up 44 spots today to hit #35 at the moment.

It's not a constant top 20 presence, but it's making a very large amount of money for a value added services app for an MMO.

Nintendo has explained their mobile monetization strategy: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1074044

To avoid embedding eight gazillion words in this thread, here's my summary:

Notes:
  • They're not ruling out paid apps, but they sound vastly more interested in f2p apps (which they prefer to call "free-to-start") because paid apps don't do very well on mobile and sell for a very small prices.
  • Their monetization strategy for f2p games appears to be aiming for a high monetization rate (as in the percentage of people spending money), but getting less per individual user. This is a more common strategy you see on PC with games like Hearthstone, where the goal is to get 10%+ of your audience to buy an expansion for $25 every 4-6 months instead of 0.5% of your audience to spend $800 a month. I use Hearthstone as an example since it's also successful on mobile. MOBAs are another example of how this is done in a different genre.
  • Like most successful mobile games, Nintendo's games will be continually updated services that get new content every so often.

Media Create answered my email about the english site.
They said that they're too busy writing the Emerging Countries Game Report, that's why they couldn't update the english site.
They'll try to update at least the rankings (without comment).

Emerging Countries Game Report? Interesting, do you have any clue what country that might be covered in that report?

So that rumour about you trying to poison the English writer in a desperate attempt to get a free copy of the 2015 White Book was false?! Damn.

Seriously, thanks for the info (missed it earlier). Was wondering what the deal was with their website, it's cool to know it's only temporary.

Media Create Sales: Week 26, 2015 (Jun 22 - Jun 28)
18./00. [PS4] Chaos;Child # <ADV> (5pb.) {2015.06.25} (¥8.424) - 4.860 / NEW

Dengeki Sales: Week 26, 2015 (Jun 22 - Jun 28)
19./00. [PS4] Chaos;Child (5pb.) {2015.06.25} - 4.461 / NEW

Famitsu Sales: Week 26, 2015 (Jun 22 - Jun 28)
13./00. [PS4] Chaos;Child # <ADV> (5pb.) {2015.06.25} (¥8.424) - 8.261 / NEW <60-80%>

Famitsu 70% higher than Media Create, 85% higher than Dengeki. That's a really high margin of error.

FE's sellthrough is pretty amazing. It's at a level where it's pretty much sold out. Looks like we might have another Nintendo game (or rather two) with long legs

This is good to hear, and I a promising start from Iwata. He seems to be well aware of the caustic environment into which he is taking the company and the pitfalls of F2P therein.

Still the PCo changes to the 3DS game going to mobile (name has left my memory), seems... less good. But that may be outside of Iwata's control.

Also is it alright if we keep the discussion to here? I fear that everytime you/we start a thread for mobile it turns into something other than a discussion. If we'd prefer to keep it from here, though, I will move my discussion to the thread itself.

Hmmm..... i don't really understand there. Does that mean their monetization will not be kinda like Hortensia Saga or Chain Chronicle there which depend a lot on gacha and the whales to keep throwing their money? But more on making all if not most fans to spend money to keep playing the game? But on cheaper rate?

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

Indeed. I want their mobile efforts (which should have a good basis, going by the recent Q&A) to succeed, not to possibly falter after the initial success, like Mobius.
