Warhammer |OT| 40k, AoS, specialist games, other miniature games - Need more DAKKA!

This stuff is all really awesome folks. I love the warhammer stuff. Does anyone 3d print theirs or is that taboo?

Is there a thread for lore discussions? I just love the lore of the 40k verse. I’m a noob but I love learning more from people about their favourite stuff

3D printing is a touchy subject when it comes to Games Workshop-related IP, and GW has been writing official statements that they don't want 3D printed models at their events or tournaments. Of course there are people who 3D print things, but they don't attend any of the big tournaments and just play with other friends who 3D print.

This can be very different in other game systems, such as One Page Rules, which is miniatures agnostic and you can use whatever model you want. Battletech is another game where 3D printing is more accepted, mainly because BT has been dormant for a number of years, and only fans making their own miniatures and playing kept the hobby alive. Now that Catalyst games brings out new plastic miniatures, it's considered polite to support the new miniatures by buying them rather than printing, but there's many people who design and 3D print their own mechs. Battletech always had construction rules and has always encouraged a DIY-attitude, while Warhammer is a more polished and pre-packaged affair.

There used to be a different thread about lore I think, but feel free to talk about lore here as well ;)

I wish there was a lore thread here because I have a billion questions.

I still consider myself "new" even though I've been following it now for about 5 years or so.

I really like all the obscure lore especially since my favorite aspect is Rogue Trader. For all the weird aliens out in the Ghoul Stars and things like that interest me.

Can someone tell me, were these "Torments" (upper right) part of Wh40k lore before?

They look really cool. From the looks of it their humans merged with demons or something?

I am so tempted to get chaos marines, but first I need to finish my Necron army!

Welp, I just ordered this:

Chaos-Knights-Army-Set.jpg

Gonna have to turn some tricks for gas money this month....

My first model ever painted! I painted 4 of these boys, same model:

I have 36 more poxwalkers to go, I figure I can practice with them before moving on to my better models.

Is that your first ever model!?
Yep! I just started collecting Warhammer this winter but had to wait until the weather turned so I could start priming. Gave me plenty of time to research everything I could about painting. I used the zenithal prime method (Corax White over Chaos Black) and the rest is just Army Painter Speedpaints.

I'm pretty happy how it turned out I feel really encouraged that I can do this hobby.

Theres always been random demon, mutant creatures in the lore. The game just has to give things names and rules so there is lots of things that don't appear in the actual games too. Theres been tons of different chaos creations over the years, random monsters, mutations, demons that don't have game models and so on.

So, I figured I would give some people a little bit of my background. But not because anyone cares but because I'm bored as fuck.

Anyways I've only been a Warhammer 40,000 fan for maybe 6 years.

I consider myself a newbie.

What got me on the hype train were specifically two things: the Space Marine video game and Rogue Trader.

The latter I am especially a big fan of. I like the idea of exploration. I like the idea of going around and finding strange new worlds, seeking out new civilizations to exploit and to go where no man from the Imperium has gone before.

Logic clearly dictates that the needs of The God Emperor outweigh the needs of the few.... or many.... or anyone.

One thing is I used to find Warhammer 40,000 ridiculous. I saw the elves and the orks and said "aw hell naw" at first. After delving into a lot of the lore, background and everything else, the game really started to grow on me. It grew on me like a small nurgling puss that quickly spread.

It's currently my favorite tabletop universe. I've had many a lot of years, mostly Dungeons and Dragons and most specifically Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition and the original World of Darkness. And last, World of Darkness I was obsessed with during the mid to late '90s.

Planescape and Spelljammer I still considered to be one of the best campaign settings ever created regardless of the medium.

But I'm really enjoying Warhammer 40,000 and how seriously it takes the lore. That is a very big thing for me. I like settings with detailed lore and once they take serious. Games Workshop really wants to keep it down. I have seen little-to-no crossovers or anything of that sort for Warhammer 40,000. It's the Grim Dark Universe that it should be.

When I jumped into Warhammer 40,000, there were no squats or at least they were something that hardly anyone knew about like those bird aliens from BattleTech.

Now, I guess they're bringing them back calling the Leagues of Votann. I know nothing about this new entry except apparently they have some kind of ancestral computers? Already they sound extremely interesting and I'm looking forward to it.

In a way, I wish I would have got into Warhammer 40,000 earlier. Maybe at least 10 or 15 years ago but everything I'm seeing I am liking.

I agree! I just started getting into 40k within the last year or so and I'm currently painting my first army (Death Guard). Yeah the Leagues of Votann look awesome I'm definitely going to be keeping an eye out for that release.

I made a thread in Gaming Discussion asking what is your favorite Warhammer 40,000 video game so go check it out if you can.

Maybe it's just me but it seems like Warhammer 40,000 video games are getting better. There's been a lot of really good ones lately and I think that Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters might be one of the very best.

A lot of the upcoming ones look really good too and I cannot tell you how excited I am about Rogue Trader. That is actually the tabletop game that got me into Warhammer 40,000 along with the Space Marine video game.

Rogue Trader is my favorite spin-off or aspect or whatever you want to call it. It's basically Star Trek in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

I love the idea of exploration and diplomacy and trying to get along with some of the Xenos.

See, I would still consider myself to be sort of a newbie when it comes to Warhammer 40,000 but my understanding is there's been times when even an Eldar would be part of a Rogue Trader crew.

Plus I love all the obscure aliens as they are more Lovecraftian than the typical Warhammer 40,000 standard races. Saruthi, for instance. Or the Yu'vath.

There's still a part of me that I wish we could find out more about the Dark Age of Technology but I also understand not wanting to explain too much.

Some actors I would love to see in a Warhammer 40,000 movie or series....

Karl Urban
Giancarlo Esposito
Lance Reddick
Henry Cavill
Gina Carano
Michael Wincott

That's just a few off the top of my head that I can think of for Warhammer 40,000 movie or series.

Slowly working on updating my Necron army! Going to work on Chaos Knights after. Currently planning a Wraith Bone/White mix to give it an almost ivory finish for the big pieces, with some bronze/gold trim, and red highlights. Almost angelic in its monstrosity.

My harsh white painting light combined with how metallic these guys are really kind of distort their paint jobs a bit, loses some detail. So they look a bit better than these photos suggest.

Those look fantastic! How did you do the basing? I wanted a good blue/snowy/tundra look but I could never get the desired effect.

Ultimately the jetbikes are magnetized to their base with a ball bearing, allowing freedom of motion on their mount. I use loctite super glue control gel.

The winter terrain is, I admit, not mine. It's the one thing I cheat on. I buy exclusively from Nature Base on Etsy, his work is fantastic.

Have recently started to get back into 40k again, after dropping it for many years.

Not that interested in playing at my age… but the lore is fucking fabulous. I’d forgotten how enormous the narrative is.

Currently making my way through the Eisenhorn novels for the first time, which are excellent. Never read the books before, so am looking forward to ploughing through as many as I can. Also looking forward to Darktide.

Can‘t help but think there will be some sort of live action adaptation coming pretty soon, and Eisenhorn really is the perfect character to adapt.

I figured I might as well post an update. Still making my way through my poxwalkers; I've been taking my time I have 8 left to paint then I can start on my main Death Guard:

Uh oh a question just popped into my head about the Tau.

Do the Tau have an organization devoted to space travel and space exploration? This alien faction is the closest we have to traditional science fiction and Space Opera in the Warhammer 40,000 setting so you would think they would have a group devoted to exploring space.

However this all came to a halt when somebody else mentioned that they probably do but it's limited and then I remembered they can't travel the Warp. That severely limits them even with their diverse group of aliens that work under them.

That makes it kind of sad because otherwise a Tau would make sense exploring space.

Ho-ly Sheeeeit. That was some awesome announcements today! Beautiful new HOrus model, the rest of the Votann (whom I am buying as SOON as I can), and some other cool little showcases.

Votann stole the show for me though. Hecaton land fortress looks damn fantastic.

So I got myself the Age of Darkness box...

Kitbashed some Ebon Keshig out of the Cataphractii termies...
BnKbr5C.jpg

Build some recon marines with nemesis bolters, gave them a Rogue Trader-style camo pattern...
HvFOxFA.jpg

Now I'm onto painting the first squad of regular legionaires with bolters

My first Death Guard marine painted! A little sloppy on some of the lines, definitely room for improvement. I like Death Guard because you can afford to be a bit sloppy, it kinda fits them lol.

Something that always made me wonder....

So we know that the Imperium of Man pretty much worships the God Emperor. They see him as the creator of humankind.

But usually religions have some kind of view on the creation of the entire universe and that seems to be lacking here. Nowhere does the Imperium have a thought about how the universe came into being or that the God Emperor created the universe for some reason?

I think the Tech Priests and their whole Omnissiah view of things does have them believing that the Void Dragon or whatever created the universe so they seem more in line with traditional religions. I mean in my opinion they're probably further to the truth especially when you consider the C'tan we're the first things in the universe that we know about and per day even the Old Ones.

The C'tan in the early years before the Necrontyr got a hold of them may have been the most powerful beings in the universe.

The emperor's ascent from man to God is a pillar of the Imperial faith. The belief requires an acknowledgement of a time before the emperor so he is not seen as a creator of anything except the Imperium.

"Drive me closer, I want to hit them with my sword!"

The sword is magnetized, so can be replaced with other weapons to indicate what squad is inside the Rhino.

My painted HH White Scars so far:

Started painting the Ebon Keshig that was just bashed together in the last post:

The greatest irony of the lore is that the emperor was dead set against any kind of religious belief. He was the ultimate atheist. And yet, he's now worshipped as a god. How he must hate it (if he's capable of understanding what's actually going on in the real world anymore).

I think the best explanation for what you're saying is that the human race had moved beyond religion prior to the age of strife, during the dark age of technology. So creationist myths died out long before the emperor came along, so there would be no reason for the religion based around the emperor to have a creationist aspect to it. The imperium also acknowledges that something existed before the emperor (at least the higher ranking parts of it anyway) because of the technology they keep finding from the distant past. I don't think he's necessarily worshiped as a universal creator... more as a man elevated to godhood in order to protect humanity from the horrors of the warp. He's closer to Buddha than he is to Jesus, in that respect.
