People say religion but in the absence of it we are witnessing in realtime the result. US has trended more to secularism and all it's done is lead to more indulgence, and degeneracy. And look at the morals set by this new secular crowd for example on ree thier framework is built on hypocrisy, double standards and moral virtue signaling.

You do realise Resetera is a games forum of a few thousand people, and not representative of the secular people of the world in any way, shape or form, don’t you?

A tie between religion and anything resembling this:

Religion should be on the poll, it is the number one cause of death and misery.

It's not on the poll because it's been around since the dawn of civilization. It's also debatable if we can call it an invention at all. We have no idea how it came about.

I'd also debate that it's the number one cause of death. I'd actually go with politics as the number one cause of death as it's always been the number one reason for war. Politics has also become so toxic that it's the cause of the culture wars and become a banned discussion on this very forum (which is why it's not an option in the poll)

Social media by far Nuclear weapons have proven to be beneficial deferents thus far: I will admit I seriously thought Putin would have at least used a dirty bomb in Ukraine by now but it’s been a year and he’s not been that stupid and NATO hasn’t wanted to do a full scale war either. Nukes have made large scale wars obsolete.

Those 5 to 8 year old indoctrinated boys had it coming? Psychological trauma. Sexual molestation? Fucking up their life?

Please, maybe I misinterpreted your post.
Ah, no, it’s a sarcastic joke about the lengths people will go to in order to excuse reprehensible behavior by certain institutions they support rather than reevaluate that support.

Sorry for my tone. It's difficult for me to interpret text most of the time. My apologies. And yes. I'm with you.

Territory is, and always has been, the number one cause of war. Politics is generally the thing that either prevents or stops war. And religion really should be on the list, given its prevalence across human society. And if you choose Not to believe in any particular religion, then you must therefore accept that it is a human invention.

It’s created by man, it’s an invention.
Seems pointless having this discussion without religion despite it being banned since that is the worst invention.

not my point.

how did science develop and mature to what it is now?
you need a framework for these conceptions of truth, and religion provided this

Religion does not provide any kind of framework for truth. It provides a framework for belief. Two very different things. And science has been held back by religion down through the centuries, not helped by it. The renaissance didn't happen thanks to religion, in happened despite it.

Twitter is basically just a gigantic version of Resetera with 250+ million users. Reddit is basically just a gigantic version of Resetera with 50+ million users.

Sure, Resetera is more extreme and radical than Twitter and Reddit but they are basically degrees of the same thing.

Not religion. Anyone mentioning religion shows their poor comprehension of its vast role in human society and evolution. It's basically impossible to discuss anything about human history and culture without the role of religion in any shape or form. Christianity, in particular, was the driving force behind a lot of good things, including art, law, literature, social organization, charity and mutual help, the acknowledgment of human rights and the value of human life, and even science itself as a result of ongoing philosophical debate and the search for continuous improvement.
To assess that religion held back humanity is simply wrong, and demonstrably so. Corruption, inequity, paedophilia, gullible masses and a lot of other bad things are certainly not a consequence of religion, seeing how they persist and thrive in self-proclaiming secular societies. Being a rich, suppressive, retrograde piece of shit is not exclusive to men of any church.

OT, it's not easy to choose between nuclear weapons and cigarettes, as both things serve no purpose but destruction, just on different scales of magnitude and time.

What about religion in 2023? Is it still a good thing?

It's easy to hate religion, but it was archaic way of controlling people. We now have social media, political ideologies etc.
Religion was an effective way to unite people in old days - and while it had a lot of side effects - but I think it's fair to credit religion as important human invention, that without it - we could be just roaming around as a neanderthals in hunter gatherer society...

Territory and power are causes of war, but they're linked to politics. Yes, politics end wars, but they also start them.

It’s created by man, it’s an invention.

I did add the 'other' vote option so people could discuss something they believed to be worst that wasn't on the list.

Religion isn't a banned topic here. That's politics, which is why I didn't add that for an option. I didn't add religion because I disagree it is one of humanities worst inventions

Religion isn't the worst invention. It hasn't been the cause of most wars. It hasn't been, nor is it currently the cause of most deaths on the planet. It's also not the cause of the biggest problems facing humanity today.

What time is it?
Antibiotics. You meat sacks live too long now and all of the world's ills are born from the overpopulation that came with modern medicine.

the movable type printing press should be the winner...like most things the good comes with bad, the higher we reach the deeper we go
everything on that list is the direct result of the movable type printing press
