All around race of the game, good starting race if you plan on switching around a lot with your classes.

z08tq0e.png

Excels at the Force abilities and is generally not as adept in the other non-force combat class types. Though for the Buster class a Numan works due to the use of Force abilities with the class.

nQYUzZo.png

Geared towards ranged combat for both offensive and defensive stats, not a good choice for a class that uses Force abilities though.

Generally though as you will see with the Stats Breakdown information below the class section, the actual numerical values are not all that different, so feel free to pick whatever you want. Unless you are really into number crunching perfection.

#0:
Q: When is this getting localized for the West?
A: No official word yet from SEGA unfortunately.

#1:
Q: What type of game is this?
A: Phantasy Star Nova is a single player Action RPG. It also supports 4 player co-op via Adhoc, unfortunately though there is no infrastructure mode (Online Play). For those familiar with Phantasy Star Online 2, this game is pretty similar in the design mechanics, yet has its own features to keep it separate, but general gameplay along with other things PSO2 players will most def recognize.

#2:
Q: I'm new to the Phantasy Star universe, would I still enjoy the game?
A: Since this game has no real connection to others in the series, am pretty sure you would have a good time esp if you enjoy action RPGs. The gameplay is not that difficult also and controls are fairly straightforward.

#3:
Q: Do I need to know Japanese to play this game?
A: For the most part the game does not seem to have overly complex quests and weapon skills are easy to figure out when you use them, so for the most part if you do not mind missing out on the story the game is highly playable without knowing Japanese. This is also going off of a good

#4:
Q: Can I change my race if I do not like my initial choice?
A: Unfortunately you will not be able to change your race after character creation. Though once the Salon is created you will be able to customize your characters hair style, accessories, voice and few other things. You will not be able to re-customize physical appearance settings though such as face selection, body size etc.

#5:
Q: Can I change classes if I do not like my initial choice?
A:Yes changing your class can be done at any time once you have unlocked the class station in the game. There you will be able to change your class and re-adjust your special bonus skill grid. Normal attack skills can be changed at any time from the pause menu.

#6:
Q: Which is the best class for a beginner?
A: Generally either the Hunter or Ranger are both pretty easy to use. It depends on your combat style. Force takes a bit more practice due to all of the spells and being squishy in terms of defense. Though their damage output is pretty high once you learn the class.

#7:
Q: Which weapon type would you suggest a new user to use?
A: Truthfully all the weapon types are situational and each has its own ups and downs when it comes to skills, attack speed, damage output etc. But from what I have seen in the demo, pretty much everything for the most part is viable. Esp against the Gigantes enemy type. The Assualt Rifle for example is hilarious OP with the bullet rain type of skill due to how many sections you can hit at once. But that skill is not as useful on smaller enemies, just due to how much they move around. On a large target it rips them to pieces. A lot of the weapon skills in the game have been tailored to be viable against massive targets, which is why the effects may seem pretty large on a lot of the skills.

#8:
Q: Where is the Buster class? I am not able to make one from the start?
A: The Buster class is unlocked later as you progress in the story. It is a special class whose main purpose is for Anti-Gigantes combat that is not available for selection at the start of the game.

I'll be looking out for impressions, though I'm holding out a little longer for an announcement of a US version to decide if I want to import or not (even though I know it's probably not happening).

I'm hoping this one has the sense of completeness that I'm not getting from PSO2JP (I've played a lot, it's fun, don't get me wrong, but the console versions definitely feel more...whole, due to the MMO aspects in PSO2).

Definitely looking forward to this especially if a U.S. version is on the horizon.

The demo was quite good I have in almost 20 hours with it so my character and supplies is pretty much all ready for when the game comes out tomorrow.

The 2nd demo was a lot better received than the first one. Gave a good feel of what exactly to expect with the game itself as its a good portion of the starting part of the title.

Great, I didn't know that someone's making an ot for this.
Can't wait for the game, spent 8 hours in the new demo getting all classes to lv 30etc. And loved every minute of it.

I need to check the controls options for the PSV but playing on the PSV TV by pressing R3 I think it was allowed me to go into the manual aim mode for the ranged weapons which helps a lot. Since I used to use manual aiming a lot when I used to mess around in PSO2. Am glad its in there, was worried when was playing it on the PSV that they might have removed it. Didnt check the key config at the time.

They have a key config that allows R1 to allow for aiming and shooting at the same time. Or something like that was messing with it earlier.

Great, I didn't know that someone's making an ot for this.

Day one. Can't wait to grab this after work tomorrow.

I loved the final demo.

It really is too bad that no one is working on software similar to Xlink Kai cept for the PSV, for games like these that dont have infrastructure mode built in. D: Since could imagine this game being quite awesome with friends.

Great OT, might get this.

Thanks!

Go get the demo since you can import the save data into the full game. Will give you the best impression of what to generally expect. Also includes a fight with the first Gigantes, even though you can totally stomp the thing no problem lol

What class is everyone going to main?
I'm planning to go with Knuckle Hunter, just like in PSO2, but it makes me sad that both Rangers and Forces can deal so much more damage on both normal enemies and bosses.

Its just like PSO2 ranged characters pretty much kill everything before the melee folks show up. D: That are not bosses anyways. Man that used to happen to me a lot. D: All my traumas. Seems like you went through that too lol

Though I was using the knuckles and doing some pretty decent damage with some of the moves, but yeah nothing like what that bullet rain skill can do. Since the ranger w/ assault rifle really does outclass knuckles.

Might go with ranger / buster since with the Gigantes am real particular on what parts I attack / break. Seems that you get a lot more resources if you go for breaking as many parts as possible. Noticed that when I was messing around in the demo testing to see if it made a difference with drops. From killing the boss super fast to breaking a bunch of parts first. Does seem like more parts the better.

Playing on the PSV TV makes using a ranger so much easier with aiming and such, since the PSVs analog stick is so tiny with how overly sensitive the camera is made it so I had to really lower the sensitivity. With the DS have much more room to play with allowing for less jerky movement.

If I go hunter most def will stick with knuckles or the partisan.

Thanks! Am looking forward to getting into the game as mentioned was quite happy with the demo. Largest thing is seeing how much different weapon graphics there are along with the other Gigantes enemy types too.

If I spent about 20 hrs in the demo can imagine will spend a lot more with the real game tomorrow.

First, great OT as usual. Like really great.

Secondly, don't see that anywhere but is it still region locked? Or can you play offline and enjoy it? Or do we still need to VPN it?

This game doesn't have online multiplayer.

Yeah but does that mean I can play it with a US/EU account that is located outside of Asia? :)

Edit: want to play it but ignored it since the first one was to much of a hassle to manage.

There should be zero issues if you get the cart version, only downside is you will miss out on the colab. dlc stuff along with anything else thats JPSN related. Updates you will be able to get no problem though. Since this is a single player game you wont have to worry about the hassles that you must have gone through with PSO2. :)

Great OT dude!

I've ordered the Asia version from Play-asia. Don't import that often, but I have no belief that this will head west wards - and I wants it! It's my Xmas Vita treat!

Had a great time playing Aquanauts Holiday JAP earlier in the year, and I've always managed some how to gate crash through my eastern imports even though I don't know a lick of the languages.

I mean how hard can it be to play a Phantasy Star game?

Shame about the no online, though.

Anyway subbed, and expect a few dumb questions about what the hell is going on from this daft Englishman.

The game shouldnt be that hard to play for the most part if the demo is a good indication of what to expect. Most of the quest stuff is go on X quest and complete it or bring back # amount of Y. Pretty straight forward! It really is a shame that there is no online play, as it really would have benefit from it. Am certain the reason why is because SEGA didnt want to have a title eat into the "sales" within PSO2. Makes sense business wise, though at the same time it does hurt this product, since think it would make for a great sales point if it did have an online mode. Esp in this day and age folks pretty much expect online with titles like these.

Do hope you enjoy the game when it arrives!

Yep, the not wanting to leech off PSO2's player base is the same thought I had for no online.

Whatever happens I'm a big fan of Tri-ace and had to support them in this endeavour.

There was an interview with the producer/director/etc. some time ago in which he defended the lack of online multiplayer by saying that the gameplay was changed a bit from PSO2, since there's no lag in offline/adhoc mode. This allowed them to make encounters during which split second reactions will be crucial or something.

And then there's the 9 minute Nova trailer with literally "if you want to play online, play PSO2" in the end, so yeah, they're not tricking anyone.
The split second reaction talk is even more funny because there are some fps drops during boss fights, which is way worse than lag imo.

Still, I kind of can live with the lack of online mode, since PSO2 is out there. It also seems that the multiplayer in general is kind of a throwaway mode this time, as opposed to the Portable series. Are there even non-story multiplayer specific missions available?

Thats a good question, wonder how the ad-hoc stuff works. My guess is just there are standard missions with the story triggers ripped out. Similar to like when you re-run a mission you dont see the same events happen and such.

haha yeah about the trailer very true there.

How does this compared to Freedom Wars?
If I am to get one, which one should I buy?
Don't both games have demos on the PSN? Downloading and trying them yourself is the best way to know the answer, since the feel of the gameplay is completely different.

Its quite different in the sense this game actually has levels and exp that your character gains.

If you want to play online with folks Id suggest Freedom Wars.

If you are looking for a single player experience that Im sure has a better story, than this game would scratch that itch. Along with having more weapons, which is one thing Freedom Wars is a bit lacking on.

What type of game are you looking for exactly?

Also the other downside is since you would be importing this, this game is more expensive than the 30 USD tag that Freedom Wars has.

Beautiful OT!

I look forward to read about the game here.

The first time I saw gameplay from this game I thought it looked so cheap (budget wise), but every time I see new footage it keeps on looking better and better.

IMO the animations in the game looks really good (and I hope they keep the mocap for the cutscenes throughout the game).

How are the impact animations on the enemies. In the videos from the first demo I remember it looked like they just was pushed in front of the weapon you used, but in the videos I have seen from the latest demo the enemies seems to have hit animations.

How does equipment work, are they just cosmetic and are they in sets or can you mix and match them?

Are there any crafting in the game?

If by impact animations you mean physics? Since dont expect anything like that. There is just the usual damage animations and such.

The way your character looks is cosmetic since this game has no actual armor, but there are shield units that up your defense status, but those have no visible graphic.

Weapons can be customized with the attachment parts that add stats and physical appearance, though its hard to line the parts up so it actually looks good due to all of the hardpoints are pre-set, therefore you do not have a full free range of movement.

Crafting in the sense of resources are necessary to upgrade skills and make new weapons then yes this game does have that. Same goes for the weapon attachments are made from resources collected from enemy drops / items found in the world from breaking objects such as crates.

I should get around to trying the second demo, shame there is no online multi I somewhat get their reasoning, but I don't think it would have had much of an impact on PSO2 to where they shouldn't have included it.

How do you get new clothes?

Does the weapon you use on the gigantes work in the way that you are marking places when you shoot and then hit them with the bullet rain skill or is the rain hitting so many places automatically?

Have you tried the full game yet. If so, how is the framerate?

How are the difficulty in the previous games?

Can you direct your companions in any way?

Is there some way to see how much HP the enemies have/have left?

You craft them like anything else.

You can lock on spots you want to hit like in the case of all enemies with weak spots, but since gigantes type enemies have so many parts, they're often close to each other resulting in hitting multiple ones with one attack.

The framerate will probably be the same or slightly better than in the second demo.

No, they're doing their own thing.

No.

You really should play the demo for at least 30 minutes or just watch a playthrough video, it would answer 90% of your questions so far :)

Hasemo basically answered all of your questions but with the video was manually aiming at everything and used skills that would hit multiple targets on areas that had bunched up parts. Using lockon works the same way but its more of a pain in the ass to manage when there are a lot of targets.

Have not tried the full game yet will be later tonight. Id say what you see in the demo would be pretty much what the full game will be like.

Previous games if you play through normally and dont go after the high lv missions on purpose its not that difficult. as with any level based arpg if you do not level up you will have a hard time.

Thanks for giving me some idea of these games.

I am looking for the type of game that has more focus on story or SP, with a touch of online multiplayer experience. You see, I have never caught into the craze of Monster Hunter games but I tried Gundam Breaker (because Gundam) earlier this year and kind of like it. I have fond memories of Phantasy Star on genesis but the character style of Freedom Wars are very appealing. I need to choose one because I don't think I have time to invest into both... I guess Nova would be the better choice then.

Awesome video against the Agrios.

Damn Ranger looks so good here. They do more damage than I expect. If they can do decent damage and attack from a distance (and you were hardly taking any damage as it is, maybe due to being familiar with the demo and PSO2 or being high leveled or w/e I'm not sure) that is amazing.

yeah the ranger is pretty strong. im almost lv max with the class and have a good defense unit on which is why wasnt taking much damage. as you saw with the vid crazy loot for breaking all those parts lol

FAQ doesn't really answer my specific question, I can understand spoken Japanese and read katakana/hiragana but know very little kanji.

I could play PSO2 and understand the story pretty well since a lot of the stuff was voiced and a lot of the items were in katakana.
How about this one though, is it heavy on kanji?

I'd download the demo but don't have a second memory card for a JP account..

lots of the story parts are spoken the demo shows that pretty well and so far quests are not super complex. with that in mind am sure you will be fine if you pick the game up. most def the demo is the best way to check since its the whole starting portion of the game.
Hm.. I see, thanks. About time I upgraded my memory card then I guess, could just use my old one for a JP account. I'll see if I can try the demo then.

yeah the ranger is pretty strong. im almost lv max with the class and have a good defense unit on which is why wasnt taking much damage. as you saw with the vid crazy loot for breaking all those parts lol

Ranger with Reflect Aegis is basically invincible for the entire Gigantes fight as well.
I think my force though, could do around 28000 damage in one go with a wind attack, so they're plenty powerful too!

Parakeetman

No one wants a throne you've been sitting on!
