November 2014 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes December 9th

We might need one of the sales gurus to correct me, but after the September numbers for Wii (which PS4 was very slightly ahead) the next numbers update didn't come until January. If so, Sony is ahead of the Wii since September, but they won't know if they still are the fastest come next month. Wii is just Shipped numbers, so Sony may still be able to do it WW.

Wii shipped sales within the first year might as well have been counted as sold through sales.

Thanks, as always^^ They will need to ship a little over 6.6 Million between October and January 1st to keep the top shipped spot... that is... doable, but would mean either a sizable amount of hardware on shelves, or that the machine is doing better in the "Tier 2/3 countries" than most are assuming... looking forward to February^^

This. Profit clearly wasn't in mind for MS this year. Not with those bundles and price cuts. The goal was to have just one month were they could claim the number one spot here in the US and maintain the marketshare which they fought hard for last gen.

They didn't have to fight at all for market share in the last gen, Sony delivered it to them on a silver platter and spoon fed them for good measure.

Not sure if more merchants are doing it, but Amazon has a new promo on the PS4.

Choice of 1 free game among four (LBP3, Far Cry 4, Destiny, NBA2k15), making the PS4 an effective value of $339.
Wonder if that's going to boost Amazon sales, and by how much...

Which was a bit disappointing, but considering the nature of the event, right call from Sony.

It wasn't the right venue and it didn't make sense, numbers will be much bigger than what they could have announced yesterday by the end of this month, just waiting a few extra weeks.
There will be an update for ww sold through in early January.

This would be a hilarious "crust on the bread" victory x3

No sales boasting by Sony at PSX...
Actually right about at the start they had a ticker on the screen counting up and got to around 14.6 million or something around that before it disappeared off the screen. Thinking that was a hint to sell-through WW numbers as of recent.

Could be wrong, but it feels right. Also glad they didn't gloat about it at the event; not the time or place. Save it for a press release or CES.

EDIT: Quoted the wrong picture lol

Meant to reply to the implication that shit will go crazy is PS4 pulls ahead again.

Very unlikely to say the least, but as I have said in a couple of other posts. Both sides of this fence will be glorious entertainment.

Yeah the Wii definitely has a sizable lead in terms of acceleration at the moment, I don't think the PS4 will match its 20 million number. But I could be wrong.

Also its kind of depressing that there probably won't be a million seller this november judging from all the estimates here. Isn't that a bad thing?

So I was in Costco yesterday (North of Seattle) and they had PS4 for $489 and the X1 for $339 sitting side by side.

Granted, the X1 price was after a $50 rebate, and the PS4 had 1yr PS+ and an extra controller in the bundle, but for people that don't know any better, they just see the price difference of $150.

Yep. That happens a lot.

And that is why the Wii U was such a runaway hit. Outsold by the Ouya, of course.

$489 for "third party game box" vs. $339 for "third party game box" vs. "I don't care about that box regardless of price because it doesn't have third party games."

You know the point I'm trying to make: that a lower price doesn't mean an instant sale, even to people shopping at Costco. Even if they "don't know any better".

Pachter's Predictions:

XB1: 750K
PS4: 600K
WIU: 300K

Please, GAF, be smart about this.

DO NOT make a new thread about his predictions. And if a site like VentureBeat picks it up for some stupid reason, DON'T bring it over to GAF. Threads about Pachter's predictions just lead to a whole bunch of nonsense that isn't conducive to proper discourse.

Pachter only channel checks a few stores and his predictions are NOT IN ANY WAY a reliable source. He predicts video game console sales for FUN. His real day job is to help investors make sound investment decisions.

And yes, Pachter deserves every penny he gets for the real work that he does every day.

Whats his track record again? (Not being rhetorical, I'm seriously asking here)

Wedbush (Pachter) didn't release predictions for some months earlier this year, which is negatively impacting their ranking this year. Here's how they've finished the previous few years, though.

2011 - #3 overall
2012 - #17 overall
2013 - #21 overall

Individual months can vary wildly, like anyone else's predictions here, but overall, they're not too shabby! :)

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
I think every console manufacturer had a disappointing month per se; Nintendo did not comment on hardware sales during Super Smash Bros launch; neither did MSFT who most likely won during Black Friday weekend.

I don't know, I don't have a good feeling or maybe I'm just paranoid....

Holiday sales have become increasingly November-centric (black friday) in recent years.

It used to be that December was 2x November sales, for example PS2's peak year had:
Nov-02 1,318,000
Dec-02 2,733,000

X360 best year was 1:1 ratio.
Nov-11 1,700,000
Dec-11 1,700,000

Last gen consoles last year actually sold MORE in Nov than Dec:
X360 PS3
Nov 647000 424000
Dec 643000 299000

lmao.

That XBO number is higher than pretty much every PS2 and Wii November.

MS did have a comparably $100 price cut for November so I think just taking into account what going from $400 to $300 (along with halo) does for a system we could all be surprised come the November NPD thread.

That said, no way it did 1.5 million.

The Xbox 360 sold 1.7 million in November 2011.

It's theoretically possible for the Xbox One to sell those kind of massive figures, but I really don't think it's likely (at all) given that Xbox One's performance doesn't seem equivalent to Xbox 360 when the Kinect was massively popular.
