5 months for someone who hardly posts. I'm sure that will be felt keenly by CBoAT.

Not that I'm trying to say more should have been done, but the idea of banning someone for such a length of time, especially when it's someone who hardly ever posts, seems somewhat futile.

And all for him to return at his favorite time of the year lol.

Price was the only thing holding Xbox back, and now that they've dropped the price they should be competitive from here on out. The issue for Xbox is Sony has taken a chunk of their primary markets (US/UK) and are still dominating WW sales.

Its crazy to think about it but Microsoft dropped price by nearly 35% in 12 months, and Sony is still confident selling at their launch price. Wondering how long that will last...

The real news here is that the industry is down year over year substantially, and while the new console releases had a lot to do with that, its still worrying that its by that much. Especially when you consider how much cheaper stuff is.

Maybe three strikes and he is out should happen.
Titanfall, NPD are the first 2.

PS4 still sold about 900K this month, Sony doesn't really care. I expect a price drop to $299 Fall 2015.

I don't expect 299 for a long time, probably around ps4 slim. I think they will do $349 long before 299.

If MS keeps the bone at $349, I think sony might do the same.

If MS returned to 399, I think sony will hold off till summer for any drop, if then.

Until the 3ds price drop and the memory cards prices, the Vita had a ton of hype. IT could have been salvaged if sony reacted fast early on, but instead, they just abandoned it. They only adjusted prices long after any hope was lost.

I love mine, but wow is it an example of just not reacting to the market changes.

I don't think it's a case of poorly timed price drops. Its USP is just incredibly poor in today's market and has weak major first and third party support.

No, it and WiiU were doomed at the outset.

It took a massive price drop and tons of games just to bring 3DS to PSP levels... which trailed off almost as quick as they came. Now the platform is month to month tracking well behind.

Vita was screwed at the outset. Nintendo handhelds have had a stranglehold on the market since its inception. And the handheld gaming shift has still left them with almost nothing. Sony had a limited foothold in America, so of course they were the first casualty of the shift.

If MS can claw back another couple hundred thousand in December, get the gap down to <500k, then it could be pretty close for the generation in the US. That still isn't great for MS vs where they were with the 360 last gen, but it does keep things interesting and will keep both companies on their toes.

Although I'm curious about what happens in January onwards, once things get back to normal

Oh, but they'll spend $2.5 Billion acquiring Minecraft, though.

And I still think that was the dumbest move all year. 2.5Billion for a Game everyone has, even if they make a mine craft 2, I highly doubt it would be successful enough to recoup the cost, not to mention a profit.

I think they'll go to 299 around E3, because they can as they have already said production costs have dropped by a lot. Plus, in fall 2015 they could perhaps launch Morpheus to get additional revenue from existing owners. The bigger the user base is for Morpheus, the bigger the chance for success.

Haha!

That's a great month for Microsoft. They had to get seriously creative with bundurus but it seems it has worked. Next month will be interesting

Now that I trust Amazon ranks again, it seems obvious they'll win again. Totally prepared for the gap to shrink to about 500K.

(...and then widening to above 1M again until next MS bunduru madness - Halo 5/MCC Bundle at $249 and $229 on BF, quote me on that).

Isn't Jan through Mar/April usually pretty slow in terms of console sales?

Could see Sony chip away at any gains MS will have made during that time, especially considering their AAA line up compared to MS.

If M.S. bumps the price back up to 399, don't expect a price drop for the PS4 till 2016. Their 2015 lineup is packed.

THE WORDS! They'll drift away without the _!
Xbone's price cut / promotions must be close to the most effective price cut ever. Certainly wasn't tracking towards a 1.2m November for the rest of the year. You'd have to think they would be roughly half that had things stayed as they were in October.

Its not just about the video game. All merchandise. Lego Minecraft items are extremely hot this holiday season. I have spent around $100 of Lego Minecraft stuff for my nephews. They love the stuff.

It's not just for the games. They own the IP which has TONS of merchandising included.

I've said it before: as a parent who just finished Christmas shopping for his two young boys there is more to Minecraft than just the videogame.

The honeymoon is over. Sony needs a to drop the PS4 price or X1 will probably be comfortably #1 in NPD results from now on. First party exclusive and more powerful hardware don't mean as much as the price difference does to the average consumer.

Why does Sony give a shit if the console is still killing it worldwide?

The new price is $349.

It'd be suicide to raise the price back to $399. MS won't do it. The new normal is One is cheaper than PS4. At least the pricing makes sense now. Less for less and all that.

A. I am pretty confident outside of the gaming circle, no one even knows this thing exists

B. I'm pretty sure people people don't know exactly what it is

People know what an xbox and a playstation are. No matter what generation it is in, they are known brands. When Nintendo launched the Wii U, nobody knew what the hell it was.

anecdotally my mom, my sister, and the girl I'm dating all thought it was a controller for the Wii. In addition to the terrible name I still can't believe they made the consoles look so similar.

What the hell is this crap? Sony is doing great, probably outselling the XB1 world wide for november (might be close i guess) and making a hell of a lot more money than their competition at this point. They are 700.000 ahead in what used to be their weakest market, and they are millions ahead overall.

They have the price cut strategy intact, and they have a vastly superior game offering for the coming 9 months.

Of course they didn't want to lose by 400k, and yes, MS might build some kind of momentum in the US, but it's not like Sony is without instrumenta to counter this. At the same time the sales difference continues to grow in the rest of the world.

The interesting part will be to see what MS does next. Will they make the price cut to 349 permanent, or will they go back up to 399, and maybe announce a permanent price cut with some bundeling when Sony starts their first party offerings in february?

Interesting times ahead, but Sony is definitley not in trouble when it comes to the PS4. Hell, they just sold more than 800k of them in one market alone. At the same price they launched with (+games).
well someone else said it, and they made a good point

MS needs to get the gap to less than 500k within December. The next chance comes in the next December or it doesn't come at all when Sony drops the PS4 price @ E3 2015.

Agreed. Might as well be perm or not at all.

So, you gonna tell Bish?

The plan definitely worked for MS, they sold a ton and from the difference you could argue customers hesitated on buying a PS4. (How does it compare to usual Novembers) But consistently outselling over months outside the Christmas period is not an easy task for MS.

He will have plenty chances to deceive right before e3.

Eh hopefully if he does that he will get permed and it will be a lesson for all. I would hope that during this that mods will remind everyone that CBOAT's have been weak instead of believing him.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Witch hunting and console parading over yet?

Getting down to the interesting stuff, why didn't anyone who picked up Smash or a Wii u this month for it also get another game? Any game at all? Wii u software sales Is like yelling into an cavern... All you get is hollow sounds of yourself yelling back and emptiness

Also I'm still impressed with the evil within not a bad holdover, still in top 10 on ps4

Shadows of morder too being greater than. 320, but that has a much more popular genre than TEW anyway. Regardless, yah new Ip!

Biggest derail in months there from cboat. Crazy.

Would love to see a weekly breakdown of those sales to see just how front loaded the sales of Xbone were post price drop and how well it maintained over the month.

So, two questions: 1) who are the usual suspects shouting doom and gloom for Sony? 2) do they really believe that?

It actually swings both ways depending on which side of the fence you sit.

Some Xboners - lol PS4 is doomed, Xbone killed this NPD and is gonna start on a roll
Some PS4ers - lol Microsoft had to basically give the system away and throw in the kitchen sink, they are so fucked. Shows how desperate they are
Some Wii Uers - why doesnt anyone love us?

I'd like to think they know not to raise the price but the last year you would think that MS was brand new to the console business and they were learning as they went along. Almost like everything they learned from being in the market for over 10 years was completely forgotten overnight in some respects.

Sony moved 70 million PSPs, more then any handheld rival ever had. Vita, at first, seemed posed to fix every issue players had with the PSP.

It's just, well, Sony fubared the prices. $250 was great when the 3ds was 250 and tablets started around $500.

Not so much when the 3ds was $170, tablets were starting to show at 199, and the vita required $20-100 memory cards to function.

Player interest died pre launch. Devs fled form the thing (save for indies in the west, and select japanese devs in the east). Sony sat on this for years before doing anything, and still hasn't fixed many of the issues.

It was hardly DOA, not until sony just sent it to die by not reacting/bad decisions.

So how slanted were WiiU softwares to Smash then?

I'm guessing psychotically so from your post.

The problem is that, in Europe we didn't get any official price cut, at all. :( Just the packs (ACU and ACBF free, and few merchant giving 1 game free or 1 year of XBL Gold etc), so... It doesn't seem to be a long lasting price cut. At least not for now.

Or why doing it in the US where they can "easily" sell the XO, but not in the Europe (which is a market as big as the US market is, a lot of you seem to forget it), so here the PS4 will continue to sell way more, except if MS indeed make a big price cut here too, 349€ would be a good start.

I want to come with a criticism towards NeoGAF. Why didn't anyone immediately debunk CBOAT's post? There's a couple of posters who has access to the numbers, why didn't they just inform a mod about the situation? 2000 posts debating a false post, and numerous media sites quoting the post as being true. Something needs to change when it comes to these NPD threads. There's way to much guessing and way to many people with so called "inside" information.
None of this would happen to begin with if North American numbers weren't so cryptic. Nobody would believe anything short of an actual numerical ranking, instead of waiting for strange pie charts devoid of labels. I'm kind of surprised the publishers lets it get this out of hand, because in the absence of actual information, people always run on assumptions or false information. If I worked at MS PR, I would have spit my coffee out after seeing people on Twitter think the sales difference was so small.

It sounds strange to say any of that, but look at previous instances of misinformation spreading. At one point, more credit card #s were "stolen" from PSN than PS3 units had been sold. Some people still think Xbox One does not play used games. Shit goes haywire when clear, concise information is withheld.

You need to put the sales in proper context friend. The PS4 sold really well in November. XB1 had an amazing November. Sony isn't going to lose an extra 50 dollars per console sold when the system is still selling at a decent clip.

They have been pretty clear though that it's a temporary price cut, everyone who doubts that is basing it on pure speculation. I think they will leave the price at $349 no bundle, but part of me wants M.S. to bump the price back up just so I can read the the meltdowns here on Gaf lol. All the "WTF M.S.!!!" Posts it would create, would be glorious lol.
