December 2014 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes January 13th

So for all of those who gloated that they were right about the price increase, do we get to make fun of them now?

"I can't believe people can't listen. They said the price drop was TEMPORARY! Why are people so dumb?"

Yawn.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Nov + Dec 2006 for 360 was 1.641m

50% more than that is 821k + 1.641m = 2.462m

Minus the 1.23m it did in Nov and you get 1.23m for Dec?

I was going to do the math, but yeah, it should be correct.

It isn't a smart idea to just regurgitate information you get without actually thinking about it. You built this legacy...time to start appreciating it.

And stop counting the number of times you are avatar quoted....it is going to happen a lot.

Everyone made that point clear. And legacies aren't built in less than a year. This is just mockery and I don't appreciate it.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Wow. Microsoft is really aggressive with their pricing this gen.

Maybe too early, but seems it might look the same as last gen, only closer in the US than usual:

US: MSFT
EU: SNE
JP: NTDOY

People that bought Xbox One in january must be pretty angry right now.

Price-protection.

Yeah I had no idea how long it would last or not when they said it was going back up. I thought they would have stuck to $399 through the slow months of January, February but smart call on their part.

They probably raised it back up just long enough so people didn't get pissed off that they were advertising the drop as a "limited time only." So it was a limited time only I guess... Raised it for about 2 weeks, then dropped it again without any "limited time only" asterisk....

Well played MS, well played...

Nah, TLOU isn't worth $50 at retail anymore.

I'll add to that saying you can get a digital copy of it all over the webs for $15 or less. Even have seen gaffers selling them as low as $10.

Sony just needs to drop the price $50 and stop bundling first party. Sometimes people don't want the games in the bundles for $50 but would rather use that on something else.

With that estimate, it also looks like December was "just" on par with November. I don't know how to take that.

Well I knew this was bound to happen sooner or later. I think MS will take the lead in the US by April, Sony will hold the rest of the world.

I wonder if Sony regrets not dropping to $349 during the holidays now. They basically opened the door wide open for MS to get back in the race in the US.

Seems spot on to me. Exactly what I thought.

Next month ps4 will back to top and increase the gap again more then last year

Pretty obvious they weren't going to wait for E3 and they didn't.

After The Last of Us bundle Microsoft had no choice.

They were waiting to see what Sony did I suspect and they packed in... they've left themselves room to add FH2 or SO or something later on in the year too before we get the holiday bundles.

Does that really matter when they are crushing it worldwide? Kinda wonder how much they care.

Well the US is the most important country when it comes to the game industry, so it's not like it's insignificant.

I mean the PS3 pretty much beat the 360 worldwide too (except for UK), but the US still kept the 360 in front of the PS3 in total global sales.

I feel like Sony probably doesn't care that much about the "race" in the US. They are boatracing WW and realistically don't have as much price flexibility as MS does. Take the profit on the consoles you are still selling loads of and worry about dropping it if you see a drop in demand.

The US is quickly becoming MS's only market so they were obviously smart to double down on it this holiday.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

I was able to get my PS4 with 2 games for $350 from Target in December.

In the race of bleeding money for market share. Probably a race Sony doesn't want to belong just yet.

Can someone check that Nov and Dec 2006 had the same amount of reporting weeks as Nov and Dec 2013 - seems weird to have that 'weekly sales' qualifier if it means nothing at all. Doubt it affects those quick and dirty numbers mentioned above...

"Important" by what metric? Percentage share of the total market? I would argue the total market is what's important when you're a multi-national corporation like Sony and MS.

Obviously every territory is "important" but talking about having a tiny lead vs. being a tiny bit behind...who cares when the overall picture is practically a 2:1 stomping? I am merely wondering if Sony cares about the lead in the U.S. if they are still growing their lead worldwide every month.

Yup, happened to all 3 systems last gen (and not in their twilight years either).

I haven't looked into historical data but I was always under the impression December was where all the sales have been historically, and only recently has Black Friday become a much bigger event. Is that not true?
