I believe that Splatoon (like Pikmin 3) is more attractive to the Wii U hardcore than an evergreen like Mario Kart 8, and is therefore more front-loaded.

But you're right---I may be over-relying on that assumption. I don't think we can directly compare the North American and Japanese markets in this unique situation.
Splatoon is more likely to have tentacles, since it's a new IP.

Previous NPD sales numbers :D

Day one game sales are pretty big.

I dont disagree that first day sales are a large piece of the pie. I more disagree with the idea that a game with only 2 days of sales can only do 50k max its next month. It seems far too low a maximum given that the game is fairly casual and the promotion has been pretty good. If you said 80k max sure but when even Kirby was able to do 50k second month with way more time I dont see why splatoon could not.

WiiU essentially flat MoM, and I'm pretty sure its now down YoY, wonder how the 3DS is doing, its bound to be poor too.

Well, Splatoon already outsold W101 right? I guess go ahead with the "wall of shame".

EDIT: Also, WiiU should be, if just barely, above 4m in the US.

Gamasutra.
April was both Easter and tax month, right? Wonder how much that figures into things.

Edit: to be clear, we've discussed Easter before, and there may be some effect. But that was years ago when I looked at it. Retail, in my opinion has glommed onto Easter as another sales holiday and so I think it more likely there is an effect now than before.

I dont find it likely Splatoons legs will be all that great. Seems a title that will appeal to Nintendos core demo. And those atrocious hardware numbers back that up. Game had no impact on hardware

Hardware sales all year are pretty weak. These consoles don't seem to be gaining all that much steam. We need price drops and important software ASAP or the market might stagnate quite a bit

The software is here. Games are selling. But you need your COD's, Battlefield/Front, Halo's, Fallouts, AC's Batmans Uncharted's to help move consoles.

I say this Summer Sony will try to squeeze every last buyer at that $400 price point. Then announce a price drop at Paris games show.

But you have to be concerned with MS as well. At $350 your machine isn't selling better than the competition? That's worrying. Does PS4 go $299 later this year?

Eh, well, maybe I'm wrong about it, but I think Splatoon will manage to surprise next month. Seems people have been doubting this game at every turn (myself included, to a degree), and has managed to prove them wrong at each turn, so I hope it continues.

And it did fuck all for hardware in the US, so...congrats?

Also you do realize other games continue to sell right...

That's not the point of my comment. The point of your comments is to be sarcastic towards others I see (there is another example just above somewhere), but your sarcasm is not supported by better predictions, so I don't know, maybe look yourself in the mirror or something from time to time.

What has HW sales and other games selling has to do with the point of my post (which was that nobody on GAF predicted that Splatoon will heavily outsell Pikmin 3 at launch), I have no idea. Besides moving posts for whatever you think you have to win here.

If you actually bothered to read the entire quote chain rather than cherry picking, you would've realized the real point of contention was Nintendoland (aka an example of a not Mario/Zelda/Smash game, which was sorine's point)>Splatoon, so unless you think Splatoon will sell over 4 million my point still holds.

and HW was because the first post you quoted was clearly about HW sales, hence the thing about Xbox One/Wii U getting major boosts

Just a reminder that Wii U sales picked up on Japan after Splatoon released, in its second week, not the first.

Not saying that this is going to happen on North America for this month, but one never knows, I hope they do pick up a little bit.

If Splatoon has word of mouth and legs, and hits the young demographic, its going to show this month and in December.

Any predictions for Xbox One for this month? I feel with the permanent price cut and no significant promotion (yet), could it remain the same or go lower? Last June, the spike was due to the introduction of the Kinect less SKU at the lower price point.

MS is in a far worst position, at 350 in their main territory and it is behind the ps4, and worldwide it is dire. When Ps4 price drops going to be tough for MS.

In terms of units sold, I guess. In terms of profit, PS4 didn't get a price drop while Xbox One did.

Overall, hardware sales seem pretty disappointing, but it's to be expected I guess. The PS4 drop seems normal but the XB1 drop is quite big. Goes to show how much the Gamestop trade in deal in April helped. I really hope the Batman bundle can significantly boost the PS4 sales in June.

Insofar as its the only system thats (significantly) cheaper YoY its one hell of a Pyrrhic victory.

60% PS4 on The Witcher 3, which is about 1.5x a 40% Xbox One market share.

Assuming the proportion stays constant relative to market shares outside the US and the 1.3 million number for PC, as well as putting the 15% or so digital split for consoles, we should get to around 2:1 sales.

So, about 1.8 million on PS4 and around 900k on Xbox, total worldwide? Something around there?

Its kind of crazy that as bad as the PS4 is struggling right now... its still doing way better than both the XB1 and Wii U. Yeesh.

Only it's not struggling. Neither is the X1. Both have vastly outpaced their predecessors worldwide over the same time period. It was a slow month. This holiday is gonna be nuts for both.

Geez. You'd think both consoles were packing it up and calling it quits tomorrow.

And yet no hardware movement for any of the competitive platforms.

Splatoon didn't move any hardware; neither did its competition.

The industry is not where it used to be.

MEh the consoles are way ahead of the previous gen it was going to hit saturation faster,....cannot say this at all. PS4 and x1 had a few low months last year to. Need to look at the big picture..if last gen sold this fast early on they would have slowed quicker and hit saturation at their price point faster.
