Still making my way through the Garbage Wastes. Got to a gate that lead to the Drainage. I haven't been there before but I know it's connected to the starting zone so I decided to turn around. Had to go through a crazy tough area with a ton of super aggressive octopus creatures and I'm now back at a previous shelter. If I go above ground and to the right I end up at the / a scavenger camp. I'm not sure how to get past them right now. I could try to fight them, but there are like 10-15 of them with spears, grenades and exploding spears. I tried conflict a couple of times, but I keep getting murdered. I'm wondering if I can get by without agroing them. There is a green emerald close to the shelter near a very dangerous body of water filled with octopi. I wonder if I can present the emerald as a peace offer, but whenever scavengers see me carrying the thing they usually respond with putting a spear in my face. Guess I will try again tomorrow.

I'm also still unsure about the traveller system. I used it once, but haven't had the option since. Does anyone know when it restores?

It seems like you get a passage every time you complete a sub-rank (The Survivor, The Monk, etc.) You can also save up passages - I managed to complete two ranks at once and therefore got two passages. I used one, and still have the other in reserve for when I really need it.

Ahh thanks, that makes sense. It did mention The Survivor when I used it. Guess I should, at some point, go out of my way to hit one nog the other sub ranks.

I also just read on the dev forum that scavengers react based on your behavior and their own stats as well as that of the leader. But they supposedly also take note of your previous actions against other scavengers. I think I'm out of luck going the diplomatic route because I have murdered so many scavengers up to this point.

Welp, had to use my Passage because I was so deep into that region I was in with only the faintest idea of what I found and what it did to me, and with no safe way back, it seemed impossible for me to do anything else. Went back to the Industrial Complex to start fresh and find one of the other gates I didn't go through the first time around. This journey continues to confound me.

That's interesting - I've mostly kept out of the way of scavengers, aside from when I killed one for their lamp. They're relatively docile towards me, aside from when I hung around one of them too much and it speared me :p

Yeah, it has taken me a while to realize that not every creature is hostile (from the outset). :p

So happy I've made it beyond this area: . Absolutely love the aggressive behaviour of these creatures. It makes them super scary, but also incredibly interesting to see them interact with the world. At some point I dropped into a pond and the velocity of the fall caused me to dive into an underwater alcove one screen below, and there were 3 of these creatures resting there. They quickly sprung into action and hunted me all the way to the top of an area. One actually followed me through one of the pipes.

The creature interactions in this world continue to amaze me. This morning I got in a fight with one of the scavengers. I killed him with two spear throws and then dropped his dead body into a body of water below me filled with leeches. The leeches all gathered around the body as it floated to the bodem giving me to opportunity to cross the water without getting attacked.

I haven't made it to any other hibernation points after the first. I suck at this game.

The orange guy appears to be taking me to a room with three symbols at the top and two bridge like structures that I can't jump across. It seems like I'm meant to get up onto the top, but I've got no idea. I've got here and died SO many times.

If anyone can give me some tips on where to go first, I'd really appreciate it! Ergh

There isn't really a direction to go. Just use your map to analyse what paths are available. Then try and go down a specific route

Is there a specific mechanic that determines how long a cycle lasts? I've been on the lowest rank for some time now and some cycles are longer than others for no obvious reason. It's been so long since I've actually made progress and sometimes I literally don't have enough time ;-;

I didn't even notice that they vary - the karma symbol always has a full ring of pips. Maybe they should make each pip be a specific amount of real-world time and just vary the number of pips? Would make for better planning of your "day"

I think that's exactly what the system is already - I'd just prefer it if it was a fixed amount of time rather than having it vary at all. It's just irritating when for some reason you have much less time in a day, since it restricts what you're really able to do.

sort of agreed! I think we'll change it to some sort of "Game Over?" for when captured, then a proper "Game Over" when ded. Also were looking into ways that this mechanic can be buffed a bit. Possibly allowing the player to grab spears while captures if they are nearby?
I think if you have a spear/rock/etc. in hand when grabbed, you should be able to throw it at your attacker as an escape option. Might make that too easy though

Oh I like that last suggestion

I'm watching a streamer and he's complaining about the roll mechanic a whole lot. He keeps rolling off of edges unintentionally and saying he wants it gone. It's worth noting that he's playing with an analog stick. Has anyone else run into such a huge problem with it? Any tips I could give him?

I use an analog stick. Never had any issues rolling when I didn't want to.

Every time I need that little yellow guy it's just disappeared.

I'm currently trying to find the
blue alien's whatevers
and it led me all the way to the
Looks to the Moon
area and now it's gone.

Currently in the
Underhang
with those asshole
tentaclemonsters
and I have no idea where the next shelter is from here and have barely found any food either.

So yellow guy needs to get it's ass back here and help me.

It's weird - the blue guy just suddenly appeared for me in the Ga
rbage Wastes
after like a whole day of no guidance. I wonder what triggered its reappearance?

So far, I've had fun with Rain World on the PS4, minus a few frustrating issues, the biggest being that I can't trust the duck-jump at all. For some reason, slugcat only successfully jumps after holding X about half the time (the other half, he leaps off the ledge like a crazy person).

I really, really wish that there was some kind of feedback that slugcat is actually about to jump, preferably having the controller rumble when he's ready to go (otherwise, maybe some visual cue?).

Punishing is fun, but frustrating controls aren't...

Just to make sure regarding the pounce jump: Slugcat only jumps when you release the button. And it automatically jumps forward.

If you press up then it cancels the jump.
I will say SC likes to roll of the side if you're too close to the edge to crouch. =/

There is a visual cue. His backside rises up in preparation

I'm enjoying this so far on PS4.

I noticed that SC can carry a non-food item (like a pearl) in his stomach if you hold down square - then hold square again to regurgitate it.

I don't like that I seem to lose a rank just for quiting the game (or am I doing something wrong?).

I've also had a lot of crashes, so I hope a patch will be out for PS4 soon.

I'm having weird frame rate issues with this game on the PC.

The animation us smooth overall but every few seconds it becomes jerky for a while until it resets back to the smooth motion. This happens constantly. I tried locking the game with RTSS but no change.

It *is* quite annoying that you lose a rank for quitting the game, it's quite unnecessary I feel - to avoid it, you need to quit the game while using a shelter, so rather than clicking "continue" on the shelter screen, click "exit" instead. That should really be better signposted tbh

I've had some issues with it as well, which is not surprising since it involves crouching, which I also have an issue with unintentionally doing all the time. Would love the option to put crouch on one of the triggers.

While this is true, it happens so fast that it's easy to miss him do it, and the difference in his stance is barely noticeable so if you do miss it you won't really know just by looking

I think a lot of the control issues people are having could be mitigated by simply allowing players to rebind keys. But allowing a dedicated or alternative crouch button might be good too.

completely agreed! patch 1 will address this.

to a certain degree we want to make sure that people cant just quit out when the going gets tough, but there is no need for it to be that needlessly punitive.

Lol, it's already needlessly punitive, a by a good margin.

And like More Badass asks, why wouldn't the player be able to quit the game? He bought the game. He should be able to decide if he wants to play in long 3 hour sessions, or in short bursts of 20 minutes each.
Why even consider that a bad thing? The mind boggles.

Yeah I don't get the idea of the quitting thing as a way to "avoid" anything. Like, if you're in a tight spot and you quit the game, you should just load right back into the game in that exact same tight spot. It's not a way to get around anything it's basically just a very extended pause.

I mean I guess people could quit, back up a save, then reload. But I mean at that point you're clearly not interested in playing the actual game anyway, and that tactic would work in virtually any other difficult title so it seems not even worth trying to design around.

Do you know what the area's called? I suspect you won't stay alive for much longer :p

It varies a lot depending on playstyle and probably a little luck with enemy behavior IMO. I didn't take my first death until right before the shoreline IIRC where I got a little careless with a vulture. Though when I did get to the shoreline, that's when I started getting killed far more often haha. However, I think after my first couple deaths I stopped playing so carefully.

What is it you are currently trying to achieve in your play? Are you trying to level up, or trying to explore?

Early on I think it's worth completely stratifying these two activities - either be doing one or the other.

Once you know in your own mind where another shelter is, do a hot lap where you're actually picking up enough food on the way there to be able to save. The same then applies to ranks and gates. This may not be the best way of playing, but it is what has worked so far for me.

Having said that, in an hour or two of play tonight, I feel like I know the slugcat, and this terrain, and these enemies a bit better now. My own skills and knowledge (while still indifferent) have reached a point where I actually feel a little bit confident to carry food and rank and explore all at once.

I'm not even sure how to level up (hibernating?) so I'm basically exploring, trying to find places to go. The problem I have is I find traversing the environment quite hard, so it takes a while to go anywhere which in turn means I'm passing the point of no return where I can't get back to my safe room in time before the rain comes without getting very far....so I guess I'm trying to find another safe house somewhere else so I have options.

I suspect I'm just not patient enough, I'm trying to forge ahead and end up making mistakes. More haste less speed is what I need.

I love the world the devs have created though, it's wonderful.

Oh shit, the
spiders
in Shaded Citadel are scary af

I jumped off a pole in a dark area and was instantly killed. No idea what killed me. Got one of those light bomb fruit things and threw it in the room the second time I came there and man... they were everywhere...

Yep, it certainly does require patience. If you're appreciating the world then stick with it; things will start to fall into place, your knowledge and skills will increase, and then that appreciation for the world will really start paying dividends.

You level up by hibernating in a shelter. If, in the hibernation screen, you wait a few seconds before pressing continue, it shows your rank tick upwards by one. But to hibernate in a shelter, you will need a minimum of four meals inside you.

Your first objective really is to consume four meals, then return to your original base to hibernate. This increases your rank by one, and saves your map progress. I think the latter of those is actually of more long term significance. But watch out for rank-gates, as they will only let you pass if you have achieved the requisite rank. These are the kind of waterfall / airlock gates with the funky animations. You should also recognise the rank symbols either side of the gate.

And
they have a crazy behavior where single ones scared of your light combine into large mass that aren't so scared of your puny light
