They might have no other option just like Nintendo didn't have an option when they cut the 3DS price, just like they didn't have an option with PS3.
Of course they'd like to have good sales at a higher price but if that's not going to happen, they still have to do something, also if they can still be profitable counting games and accessories in, while saving the platform, of course they'll do that since it's much better than losing all the investements done until this point.
So yeah, they don't have much else to do but aggressive bundling at the year's end.

Or, they do this, lose a ton more money, and it still dosen't work.

They better have good reason to think that won't happen before they go down that road.

I was really more thinking in terms of mainline mario games and not spinoffs so much (though i guess we're talking about brandnames so that makes sense).

Still though i can understand how someone would be lead to believe what he did. COD has sold an incredible amount this gen.

Edit: Obviously if we include all spinoffs including mario kart than mario dwarfs everything. I usually think of mario kart as a different series.

Oh I can definitely see why he wouldn't want to believe it:

it sold like 40 million copies or some absurd number right?

Commercials about it are still being aired here. Its truly a killer app and evergreen. That said, its also being bundled.

I can see Mario Kart 7 ending up with some crazy numbers as well. One of those killer apps is exactly what the Vita so desperately needs.

Estimates:

Call of Duty 4 - 13 million
Call of Duty: World at War - 11 million
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - 22 million
Call of Duty: Black Ops - 25 million
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - ?

Super Mario Galaxy - 10.68 million
Mario Kart Wii - 31.91 million
New Super Mario Bros. Wii - 25.47 million
Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 6.72 million
Super Mario 3D Land - 6 million
Mario Kart 7 - 5 million

I can't find Modern Warefare 3 worldwide sales at this point, but this gives you an idea how the series sell. Keep in mind those are just the big Mario games.

Eventually MK Wii will be ignored in sales conversations because it was bundled for the last two years of the Wii's life, ignoring that it was by far the best selling game of the entire generation before that ever happened.

You forgot NSMB and MKDS.

That doesn't even take into account the fact that Mario games are cheaper to make and probably have a much smaller marketing budget. If you're discussing which one has made more money (i.e. profit), it's a no brainer.

Real happy for Lollipop Chainsaw. I haven't picked it up, but I plan to when I get Persona 4 and KH3D in the coming weeks.

Edit: Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn at PSVita numbers. Bad for people who actually want to play the system, but great for me when I can pick up a Vita and all the worthwhile games for $200 or less in the coming years.

I haven't actually needed to buy a Wii, but what exactly IS the current SKU set-up?

I've seen Kart, I've seen new Super Mario and I've seen Wii Sports/Resort.

Poor Gravity Rush. :(

Edit: moving the game from PS3 to Vita seems to be a really a really bad move now......

Gravity Rush would have had a hard time as a retail game on the PS3, I think; the art style is pretty out there and it's not a game that you can really sum up in a few words to a regular person. I think it would have had the chance of being a very successful digital release, though.

Resistance outselling Gravity Rush is totally expected, it's an established franchise (albeit not all that great selling) compared to a new franchise with zero advertising at all from SCEA, oh like basically anything else involving the Vita. Sad but totally expected.

Can they afford it? It is probably their plan, the project 10m Vita sales, it's not like they are winging it. They maximize profit margin with first adopters, then cut their margin for a more mass market approach which coincides with the holidays and software releases. Does no one remember the 3DS first year?

They projected 6 million for the PS3 in it's first year but only hit 3 million. They can lower their projection at any time for the Vita.

I'm guessing MGS qHD Collection did worse than G? :(

~25k sounds about right for PSP, I think

MGS was pretty limited in its store presence outside of Gamestop, so I could see that being the case. It's also doesn't help that they are games that its fanbase have already purchased last year, in addition with another game, for the same price that it's going for. It's definitely not MGS3D-levels of greed, but Konami should have known better.

Starting to think 360 may just have a chance to overtake Wii one day. Maybe into the next gen, but this fall could be a bloodbath as far monthly gaps. First to 10 right heh.

6m was the first forecast before they knew how the product would be actually received by the market.
And they did 3.5m.
For the next year they knew they had the price cut to 399$ and forecasted 10m units.
They actualy did 9.1m.
http://scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps3_sale_e.html

But they knew they had a price cut coming.

Same thing for Vita, they know they have something coming up for Q4, and it's not just AC and COD.
Also Vita's forecast is a forecast to stay in the market, not something they can afford to miss by a big margin.

Unsurprising that Gravity Rush bombed, but still a damn shame.

Resistance debuting <50K is yet another blow (after RE:R, U:GA, and U13) to the notion of a vast, untapped audience for handheld dudebro games. The real test will come when Liberation and Declassified ship, though.

50k is what you can expect for a good title on a 500-600k installed base. Nothing more nothing less.
At this stage software sales are completely bounded by the installed base.

Uh this would take some hefty 360 legs into next gen.

Oh I forgot this was an NPD thread for a second. You meant in the US only. Certainly possible

Looking at Tokyo Jungle, I think it would of done pretty well in Japan (Gravity Rush did well for Vita over in Japan actually, but the small userbase made its potential/growth small). Over here, surely more then 50k would of picked it up from the large PS3 userbase. So, I'm not saying it would of been a hit on PS3; but it probably would of done better then this.
