Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of The Patriots 2.0 |OT| Kept you waiting, huh?

Combovers don't work when there is no hair
Finished MGS1 last night. Pretty great game, even though the story kinda went full retard towards the end with Liquid's whole 'the genome soldiers are clones of Big Boss and thus our brothers and sisters and I am protecting them because my genes tell me to do so since they are, like, our siblings but I'm still gonna kill you, BROTHER, because I have convinced myself you stole all the good genes an' shit'.

As for Snake's voice in MGS4, I think it was appropriate. He was a dying, old man who'd constantly have coughing fits. A rougher, harsher voice seems fitting for the circumstances. Also, for people complaining about Otacon crying over Naomi in MGS4, I frankly didn't mind it (he more or less did the same in MGS1 anyway, 'oh Sniper Wolf my beloved ruthless killer *tear tear*'). I found it far more grating when he was rolling around on the floor crying about how his research had been abused (MGS1) and how they'd lost to Liquid (MGS4).

But but MGS1 story >>>>>>>>>> MGS4

I mean that fight was amazing but that point is where I just had to go "OMG Kojima totally Deus Ex Machina'd." I mean, sure it's hinted he's
Joy/the Boss' and the Sorrow's son
but really? REALLY? You're going to just throw that line of reasoning away and go

And done with BBE run. Will probably take a break from MGS4 for a bit before attempting other ranks, including Chicken run.

Act 3 cutscenes are so good, definitely my favourite in the game. And I just love the noir vibe, the act may get a lot of hate but the setting is definitely my favourite.

Replaying this and man does Act 3 suck. The very first minute I it played back in June of 2008 I knew that it sucked and 4+ years later it still sucks.

You don't fucking do anything until the chase at the end.

Playing it over and over on Liquid Easy for emblems is hilarious because you can not touch the controller for the whole bike chase and survive. So boring to go through eight times.

How do you get the scarab emblem? I rolled over a 100 times. :| Do you have to be aiming for it to count? Just completed another playthrough; 22 emblems to go!

Are you laying down, then pressing triangle to do a side roll?

edit: Just checked, it's aiming with L1 and X (with a direction held).

Scarab Emblem, perform over 200 prone side rolls.

Act 3 wasn't as bad, well not for me. Just can't control the pacing. Annoyed the resistance guy a lot and accidents happen. :p The resistance!

Thanks. The guide I was using was incorrect. :\

If the guide said 100 instead of 200, this is potentially correct. However, I would absolutely, without any hesitation advise you to perform 200 sideways rolls instead of 100, even if 100 is the requirement because, when Metal gear Solid 4 was released, an official guide was too. However, unfortunately this guide contained a mistake, the Frog Emblem requirements were swapped with the Scarab requirements (and this still has an effect now as guides or faqs written near the release may often have contradictory information about these two emblems). One of these requires 200 while the other only requires 100. Of course, the problem is that if the guide's creator lists the correct action (for example, forward rolls) yet the incorrect number (100 instead of 200) it is a probable event that you may miss the emblem even if you were performing the correct action.

Just to confirm, is this the action, exactly as shown, that you were performing when you attempted to get the sideways rolls (I only ask this because the action "sideways roll" itself isn't really specific): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGHQXW7iXVw&feature=plcp
Somebody earlier in this thread mentioned that when performing the sideways rolls you must have a gun equipped for each individual roll to count. Now while I cannot verify that this is indeed the case (and I don't understand why this actually would have an impact) it is still something to keep in mind.

I was simply forward rolling, not rolling while prone.

Started a BBE run, but I don't think I have a high enough tolerance for bullshit to do this. Why the frak is there not an easier way to reload your save?

Because Kojima is a huge troll. In the final fight you have to exit the game to retry.

Honestly, it isn't too bad (except Act 3...dear god...) if you have the right equipment. The worst sneaking section (for me anyway) is the very beginning of the game before you meet up with Otacon. If you can get past that part, you'll be able for the rest. And if you have enough time (if you're under the four hour mark starting Act 5), you should be able to get all of the rolls in Act 4 or 5 (you'll probably know by Act 4 if you've enough time to do them or not instinctively but if you want to just be safe you can wait until Act 5 after the first sneaking section but before you go down the elevator to
Screaming Mantis
. This area is danger-free so you've a chance to do the rolls there.

Congratulations to SmithCo and Korigama on the Big Boss emblems!

Really?!

This is one of the things I disliked most about Metal Gear Solid 4 if I'm honest. It just seems like a (Act 5 end spoilers)
plot twist for the sake of having a plot twist, compeltely disregarding already established information which, even if is still completely bizarre, isn't too out of place with the series' many other supernatural elements, seems completely reduntant and unneccessary. It's made even worse that in MGS2 he actually was being possessed by Liquid but then removed Liquid's arm (which isn't even mentioned in the game I believe) and attached a mechanical arm. I just don't see why they needed Ocelot to be acting as Liquid, Ocelot being possessed by Liquid still wouldn't have altered the story drastically if I'm not mistaken.

Forcing the player to follow the resistence member in order to progress is what kills the flow of Act 3.

So I finished it.

Absolutely loved it. Sure there's flaws like too much filler in cutscenes (imo) and snake being a clueless old man, but the overall package reminds me why I love mgs2 and 3 so much. I've already put the HD collection in my basket on amazon! Can't wait to play those two again.

Indeed I hate this act with all my self. No alternative path, scripted walkthrough, a stupid interminable chase ended in a flat shooter session. This & the final act has simply ruined the marvelous experience of the first 2 act...(loved the 4th too) why Kojima why... I hope to see sooner the next MG on my ps3 without those useless sessions...

Act 1 down in 50 minutes. *pumps fist* Had to it twice, because apparently the first time I did it I accidentally used two recovery items. :(

Make sure you remove the rations from your items menu so you don't accidentally use one automatically. (You probably already know though lol)

Not to mention that the resistance member takes a long ass time and extended route to reach the destination - really a waste of time

It doesn't take a longer route if you don't follow him up the steps. If you go around to the steps where he eventually walks down and tranquilise the guards before he reaches there he takes the normal route instead (I've explained that very poorly though, I know). At least with the normal route it only adds twenty minutes to your time, the longer route is 40 minutes plus the 20 minute bike chase making Act 3 ridiculously long and time intensive (if you don't tranquilise the guards before he reaches the bottom of the steps that is).

I apologise profusely, I thought you were referring to the extended route he takes on higher difficulties as opposed to him just moving around in different directions as opposed to heading straight to the end. I have to be honest though, I don't think Act 3 is that bad the first time. It's an interesting change of pace and is something quite different. The problem (to me anyway) occurs when you replay the game, the route is always the exact same, nothing different happens (well, it's slightly different on higher difficulties when he goes by the bridge), no alternate routes or anyway to play at your own pace, you just have to literally do the exact same thing every time.

The beginning of act 2 is giving me a lot of trouble. I can get through the village easily enough, it's the part after where I keep failing. The guards having such perfect vision really puts you at an unfair disadvantage when dealing with multi-level terrain.

Remind me to not listen to gaf ever again. This game is incredible.

It's GAF's goty! Lots of annoying people just repeatedly pop up over and over in every LTTP thread saying the same thing. Gaf, on the whole, loved the game...and continued to like it 4x later. Which makes sense, cause the gameplay is pretty undisputedly fukawesome.

Indeed. A very vocal minority. MGS4 is still the best action game I've played this generation. The chills I got when I took control of
Metal Gear Rex
... just WHOA. And the final battle... just epic.

I see your point and I could have been clearer! I just didn't like how I have cleared the path for him and he still needs to take the programmed route of circling around then finally moved his ass

That being said I always tried to just follow him.

Also, I do like act 3 conceptually. It is a different take on stealth, it's just so hard to pull off

Thanks everyone, I managed to get it. Apparently you have to use the turrent on extreme or something. On the other difficulties I just blasted it away with an RPG or grenades. I was throwing everything at it this time and it seemed undamaged, even fully charged railgun blasts.

Anyway, currently doing the bike chase in act 3. Fuck. This. Shit.

Ugh, good luck there. That was hair rippingly frustrating on my BBE run. Can't believe I'll be doing it again.
SUNLIIIIGHT!

The third section of the bike chase is pure unadulterated bullshit. Fuck you, Kojima.

Edit: Fuck it, I'm done with this. BBE run canceled.

Act 1 and 2 are the most tedious parts, and the bike chase is one of the last kinda tough parts. After that you've only got the act 3 boss (easy) act 4 (all easy) and act 5 (first part is a little rough but mostly easy).
