NPD August 2012 Sales Results [Up3: Sleeping Dogs]

PS2, GC and xbox sold what, just under 200 million in total? Wii, 360 and PS3 are going to absolutely lap that and that's with the increased competition from the handheld market and other forms of gaming. So i'm not sure how sales world wide show what you're trying to say.
Current Gen. Not Pc or OS gaming. And I thought Ps2 sold 175? Even if, there's an over saturation and the game list for the NPD reflects this. I knew something was wrong when Dead Island reappeared on the list last month.

I didn't list PC or iOS gaming. If you just look at PS2/GC/xbox vs wii/PS3/360 than this gen will end up selling far mroe than last gen and it won't even be close. That's despite increased competition from tablets, handhelds and smartphones.

I don't see how worldwide sales would show that people prefered last gen.

This generation has had the most advertisement the industry has ever seen. And even if you factor the wii look at it's 3rd party sales. Shit look at the software sale in general.

Has it? I haven't seen the advertising budgets of the big 3. Personally i'm not sure it really matters all that much.

And even if you factor the wii look at it's 3rd party sales.

What do you mean 'even if you factor the wii'? Why wouldn't i include the wii? I'm not sure why wiis 3rd party sales really matter.

Shit look at the software sale in general.

See this may actually be a good point. I'm not sure how this gen compares to the last in terms of software but the PS2 was a monster so last gen may come out on top (i have no idea). I think the increase in digital sales as well as sales of games via XBLA and PSN sort of skew things a little bit.

PS2 is at like 155m? XB at 24m, GC at 21m = 200m~

PS3 + Wi + X360 is already at 230m+

Yeah, but one of those consoles can't sale software even with the largest userbase. My point is thw wii is in it's own world and does nothing to contribute software wise. Remove the wii and software whatcha got?

You don't actually follow sales numbers do you?

You mean the system that sold the most software?

Do we have any idea what the global software shipments are for the 360?

Wii was at 826M last time they reported sales numbers. 360 would have had to have sold about 12 games per console to match that, which I doubt is the case, but they can't be all that far behind. The last official tie-in ratio we got was 8.8, almost 3 years ago. At the same point in time, Wii had a 7.5x tie-in ratio (including Wii Sports). Wii is currently sitting at an 8.5x tie in ratio despite software sales slowing down, so I don't think it is unreasonable to assume that the 360 is somewhere over a 10x multiplier.

Last tie ratio we got for US on 360 was 9.4 couple months ago, in the UK the last reported tie ratio was over 10. Places like Japan, Aus ect are high as well.

That 826m Wii SW figure gives the Wii roughly a 8.6 attach ratio, is 7.7 in the US though.

You know, come to think of it you know the industry is in bad shape when we salivate for HD collections. We as a whole are really tired of rehashed gameplay this generation offered and don't want to dedicate the money for it. Sales around the world shows this and proves last gen. was just a better one. As for the vita, people I know wants it, but it's too damn expensive to just go out and buy for just games. Coupled with the fact this hasn't been the best generation in terms of experiences. The 3DS suffers from the just being a dedicated device in a world where convergence is a common theme. I'm not saying it has to be a phone, but it sure as hell needs to appeal to more than just gamers. Going back to the Vita, which does this but Sony refuses to advertise it's other features. This may change because i received a servey from Sony asking about devices I had, constantly bringing up Ipad as an option.

HD collections haven't really been that popular, and are only prevalent because Sony screwed the pooch on BC.

Are you counting wii fit and sports? Packaged games?

They should count, besides have you even taken into consideration PS2 didn't reach 155m when this gen started. Was at like 100m when 360 released, so 100m+ 40m GC + XB = 140m.

PS3 + 360 = 134m (even though it's ludicrus leaving Wii out)

Fair enough.

That and the prior generation of hardware was still saddled with crappy standards for output and resolution. The classic games don't die, but they can be miserable to play on modern televisions.

Though on the arguments about rehashed games destroying the audience for new releases, it's an age old saw that I don't think necessarily has anything to do with hardware generations. Using new hardware to revitalize interest is something of a crutch in place of the ability to make quality, timeless games.

Only the hardest core gamers this gen notice the shaders in the PS360 are 'old' now. Or even notice the difference between 720p and 1080p. Gamers in the middle just want good games. The problem is that audience apathy can, once established, punish what good games do get released. Because the average person has now lost interest, assuming that "games are boring these days", and they stop looking for new stuff. Only the few remaining tentpoles garner much attention, because the average gamer has trust in those brands having delivered a major experience before.

The real problem, moving into the future, is that the industry is going to have to mature beyond pumping out a thousand copies of the last breakout hit. Because eventually shiny new consoles aren't going to provide shocking leaps in immediate audio-visual impact in order to reignite interest among the public. It's all going to be about content, and the industry is still dominated by toaster men who believe they're selling bars of soap and boxes of crackers.

So....Vita is dead in the US? Amazon has the Madden Bundle + MLB the Show 12 + 4GB card special that ends today, it's tempting but it does feel like i'd be buying a dead system.

Is the 7.7 US tie in from NPD? If so than it would be without pack ins. Same with the 360 tie-in numbers. Nintendo's numbers count pack ins (and are shipment numbers), so after subtracting ~1 to account for Wii Sports/Sports Resort/Mario Kart/etc pack ins, the number matches up pretty well with the last reported US number.

Also, how do pack-ins work on NPD? Does it only count official pack-ins included in the box? If Best Buy decided to give you 3 free games with your 360 (as they often do, at least in Canada), do those three games count as individual software sales or pack-ins on NPD?

Need to know how much Vita sells in EU vs US. Gamescom vs E3 could be pretty telling. I guess PSP was way weaker in the US too since EU got the PSP street.

Well I'll take your word for it then.
I think he just stated his opinion/believes on it. It could be true, but there arent any sales numbers for it across whole europe as far as i know. I've actually just seen the first week UK numbers for the Vita, and that number wasnt 100% accurate either.

There have been numbers for various European countries published a few times, they were awful
Do you have any links to these numbers? I know about 2.2 million worldwide though, so it is possible to do some calculation out from this, but i'd be interested in seeing the country specific numbers :)

Tell that to konami.

When Konami has an HD collection that breaks 200k in sales, let me know.

I think numbers so far in EU have been just as terrible as in the US if not more so

Sales have to be around the same as the US if the last shipment numbers (2.2 million WW as of June 30th) are taken into account. Vita's strongest region is Japan, both relative to market size and overall. That says a lot.

Yeah, let's not count the console that has sold the most software this gen. You sure did prove your point this time!
