Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

if this is true, it means if MS decided to shut down the durango server at one point in the future, all our games will be useless.

its like i cant go back and play my old xbox 1 now since its offline only.

this is very stupid. i am not gonna support the company that require this.

its like i am basically renting my games from MS for 60$ till they shut down the server

fuck if Xbox live was under maintenance, it means i cant go and play either. lolol hell with that

i am glad at least Sony isnt forcing this. and if some third party company wants to do this with PS4, then sure as hell i wont buy that fucking game

Mentioning this for the third time. He started this whole mess with 3 to 4 tweets that weren't directed at anyone. His friend didn't start a discussion with him till later on. That's why his "I'm just trolling a friend" defense seems weak to some of us.

Well yeah it does, if he was serious it makes the story only slightly more news worthy. What will be will be and some guy (Aaron green berg doesn't even know, bit weird?) mouthing off on twitter is such a non event.

If this is the way MS is going then yeah I have to echo 'deal with it' what exactly is all this discussion going to achieve, it's just another 'not buying 720 thread' and we've had plenty of those lately based on rumour and nothing else.

It's pretty much impossible to prove whether he was trolling or being an asshole. What is certain is that he's a dumbass. He should know better in regards to the usage of Twitter and how sarcasm is pretty much impossible over the internet. His attitude towards customers fits in line with the 'always-on' policy by Microsoft. Even if he was joking about the city, his ridiculous and idiotic analogies are still worthy of criticism.

Doesn't really matter either way. Even if it was a joke, he should have known better. He is now the posterboy for Microsoft's policy for this.

LOL, pretty much.

Yeah we've already established he wasn't trolling in the end, what are you talking about?

i think he's talking about the whole sense of Xbox being always online being a Rumor, one that keeps getting repeated and raised over dozens of websites.

at this point, it's hard not to talk about it

Yeah he is an idiot I agree, whether joking or serious or whatever, he shouldn't have done that and I doubt MS are happy with him.

Jesus Christ, this idiotic picture has been posted in this thread so many times. Congrats on missing the fact that MW3 had dedicated servers back in. Hmm, I wonder why? And I wonder what the other ~1500 members of that group that the picture omits were doing.

Oh didn't see it.
Added to list...

So yes, something of a conspicuous absence right now.

I haven't heard about charging for exceeding data caps for at least a couple of years. I'm more than a little surprised to hear that it still happens. I can only assume AT&T haven't bothered propely investing in their infrastructure so choose to use an archaic and money grubbing approach to data caps.

Sorry to hear you're stuck in such a terrible position. For all my complaining about BT, when they say unlimited, it truly is unlimited with no throttling or additional charges.

It is true that AT&T sucks at infrastructure, but I dont think that is the reason they are archaic and money grubbing. That just comes naturally to them.

I can't imagine how pissed off I would be if I woke up to this shitstorm because somebody else royally fucked up.

if this turns out to be true then all it did was delay the inevitable. it would have been a bigger deal if they revealed this onstage at a press conference.

The trolling thing is just concerning the non-cities comment.

Major Nelson getting a tad passive aggressive lol

I seriously can't imagine how angry people in MS must be to wake up to this dumbshit's mess.

Best thing is this basically guarantees the neXtBox reveal will be glorious. Meltdowns either way this goes.

What will be interesting is to see if they announce it live on stage (first time we hear boo's at E3 probably) but also if peoples opinions change if MS show some incredible games.

It's like that in many places in the US. The problem is the US is freaking HUGE. Where I use to live I had 3 choices. I had cable Internet at 60Mb/s for $49 a month.

Now I live in a less populated area and my only "FAST" choice is a 15Mb/s cable connection at freaking $69 a month. Ugh

Where my parents live the only reason they even have DSL is because the State stepped in and mandated that the Internet companies provide high speed service to their rural customers. A couple of years ago they were still stuck with dial-up. They have one ISP to choose from and the connection is 3 Mbps (but hitting that is rare). It also cuts out often. They'll sometimes have no Internet access for a few days. Every time I visit them it's down for an hour or two or sometimes more. There is no wireless data coverage.

Yes, it's rural, but they're within a couple of hours drive of two of the largest cities in the country, not a remote village in Alaska or something. The infrastructure just isn't there in the US yet for this kind of thing to be as feasible as some pretend that it is.

I'm quite pro MS but your points are valid and on reflection I feel the same. If MS do this then I simply will not buy their console.

It was coming either way but 'sugar helps the medicine go down' as they say. The wording in the conference might have made it more tolerable for the average individual. Instead gamers are seeing "Why would you live there?" and an upfront contempt for them. It's the worst possible way to handle an already unlikable situation.

1558-48 != ~750 and you could figure up a percentage (39%) and extend it to the rest of the community as a very rough estimate.

The point of the picture is to point out how people scream and yell about things they want, but when the time comes to make a stand they instead fall right back in-line. Is it the correct way to run a business? IMO, no. However I think it's an interesting point and helps you to look at the ones in this forum saying they will not buy the new xbox because of this guys comments in a different light.

When the time came to shut down servers, the 720 will essentially be dead by then. MS would have nothing to lose by patching the system so it allows offline gaming. I'm sure they would clarify either way.

Still though, we're already going to see that with PSN+

No matter what I think this highlights Microsoft's error in holding back the console unveil. If they had followed Sony's lead then situations like this wouldn't be occurring.

Larry isn't really the one to comment on this... Phil Spencer would be more likely. He's been pretty active on Twitter lately as well. I expect we'll hear something from him.
Why would any MS brass comment on what is basically just speculation on rumors? We don't even know when this thing is being revealed yet. This is all just free publicity.

not only that, but the speeds in certain areas are just absolutely terrible to begin with

This idiot has a nice paying job while thousands of recent university grads are stuck working at IKEA. Nice.

Are we going to see Twitter 101 in future marketing classes?

Here it's either $30 3/vomit overloaded DSL, or $60 questionable 20/something Comcast
